Borderlands 2 was not a localization, though. These guys are taking an existing script and adding memes on top of it.
When nobody recognizes the meme, it will just come across as quirky dialogue.
Which is always present in Nintendo games.

Eh, it's not that bad. New Leaf is a thing and it's probably the greatest localization ever so it's whatever. Doubt they would put this kind of stuff in a game where it's truly senseless.

Thing about internet memes is that they're entirely time limited and fall out of the "internet zeitgeist" fairly quickly, which makes, even a recent meme come across as tacky, outdated and like an old person trying hard to be cool.
Now it's just cringeworthy and tacky, in a few years it will not even be something that makes sense and "doge" is already pretty much no longer part of the "internet stuff".

I think it almost makes the game seem dated-on-arrival. Nintendo should know better, even in a "lighter" game. I'd be worried if Animal Crossing started going down this path.
But... It does make sense. It's a person repeating what they just said in a quirky manner.
If anything, it's more humorous for people who don't get the reference.
As a non-native speaker I don't get what's supposed to be so stiff or hard to read on the European translation.
But I also think NoA's translation is kinda cute and don't get all the hate that one is getting. It's charming in my book and I'd prefer it to the European one, if I could choose.

It's probably not fair to blame her... But I blame her! It feels like these memes started popping up when she started working at treehouse. When I see a meme in a Nintendo game, I instantly hear her voice lol

I dunno. How long would that take? If I was playing a ps2 game right now and saw a rick roll reference or whatever I would recognize it and think it dated the game. This will just make the NOE translation go down as the better one.

j/k of course, not from UK myself but since UK English is the one learned everywhere except in US / Canada I always thought UK English was "superior". Also the wonderful UK accent everyone has in mind is just perfect (even if in reality it's not the same everywhere of course... in some places it hurts the ears so bad).

I dunno I'm not really a fan of using memes in localizations but I think that attacking the Treehouse over a single joke seems a little silly.
Treehouse localizations are generally great. Splatoon, Animal Crossing New Leaf and Happy Home Designer have some of the most entertaining writing in a game I've played and that's definitely in part thanks to the Treehouse localization.

Nobody is upset, it's just corny that they're spouting memes at us. I guess I just expect better from Nintendo.
This one is good because it's beyond niche and it isn't overused. In time it will also come off completely naturally as the phrase isn't meme-like (a professor who may or may not be arrogant about their Egyptian knowledge? Yeah that doesn't seem weird). It's pretty much an in joke. Doge is so popular that every single videogame message board user has run into him one way or another.
The European version uses passive voice when referring to the ruins, which tends to sound more stilted.
The example in the OP is gross but I haven't noticed too many other examples in recent Nintendo games. Then again, the ones I've been buying have been light on text.

There are ways to make references and shoutouts without ruining the experience for those sick of them or who aren't familiar with them. Just dropping it in there randomly is just terrible and lazy writing and will make the game look dated in the eyes of those "in the know" and confusing for everyone else after a few years (hell, I imagine there are people seeing it now and being confused, possibly thinking the translation is just terrible). Memes and references are basically writing crutches. You can get away with writing crutches in many styles of writing and speech but comedy writing is probably hardest to do it well in.

I do think that memes can date a game. I also think there's times where memes are woefully inappropriate. (Advertising a gut-wrenching horror game like Fatal Frame with an "Official Spoopy Trailer".)
Don't like the example in the OP, didn't like it in the Mario & Luigi games either. References in place of jokes/personality that are easily dated, won't be much better than characters spouting American Pie or Austin Powers quotes down the line. Nintendo has shown they can do personality and quirk without resorting to the meme well so it's not a big issue once in a while, but it's not funny either.

I generally enjoy the writing from the Treehouse but overall agree that this is getting a bit much. Memes are bad enough on the internet, they get dated quickly and I don't want them in my games. And why do they have English translations for both EU and U.S.? Seems like a waste of time and resources, why not share duties between NA and EU?

Also given Triforce Heroes will probably be all but unplayable in a few years due to relying heavily on multiplayer and having a shitty single player, I don't think being dated because of a meme is the biggest concern for a few years down the line

For proof of this, see Metroid: Other M or every MGS after 1.
A lot of guys from back then got fired when they hadn't sold enough Pokeymans.
Pretty sure they had British localisation/localization long before that.
