It's cringeworthy right now and will make the game seem so dated in a few years.
NoA localizations haven't reached Borderlands 2 levels of memetasticness yet so I'm not gonna get into a frenzy over them, but seeing this does make me a little disappointed in them. I'm sure they have plenty of smart and funny people working there and I'd like to think they could come up with something funnier than a tired joke from the internet.
When nobody recognizes the meme, it will just come across as quirky dialogue. It's cringeworthy right now and will make the game seem so dated in a few years.
No offense to anyone involved, but is anyone really surprised about this with Audry Drake being involved in the writing? She's always been pretty memey, even when she was at IGN.

But... It does make sense. It's a person repeating what they just said in a quirky manner.Thing about internet memes is that they're entirely time limited and fall out of the "internet zeitgeist" fairly quickly, which makes, even a recent meme come across as tacky, outdated and like an old person trying hard to be cool.
Now it's just cringeworthy and tacky, in a few years it will not even be something that makes sense and "doge" is already pretty much no longer part of the "internet stuff".

If anything, it's more humorous for people who don't get the reference.

Which is always present in Nintendo games.
I understand this is an attempt at humour, but it is frustrating as a parent trying to teach a child proper English.
Yes, I suppose using poor English could be funny.
Really? You guys still upset by that?I dunno. How long would that take? If I was playing a ps2 game right now and saw a rick roll reference or whatever I would recognize it and think it dated the game. This will just make the NOE translation go down as the better one.

"Wii U - Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water Extremely Spoopy Trailer"
Somebody over there needs to take it down a notch IMO.
A 1 to 1 translation would be incomprehensible.
Lord have mercyCan't wait for Link to put his hat on in Zelda Wii U.
I dunno I'm not really a fan of using memes in localizations but I think that attacking the Treehouse over a single joke seems a little silly.
Treehouse localizations are generally great. Animal Crossing New Leaf and Happy Home Designer have some of the most entertaining writing in a game I've played and that's definitely in part thanks to the Treehouse localization.

I love it. Kinda like the Egyptian expert in persona 4 lol.
The European version uses passive voice when referring to the ruins, which tends to sound more stilted. As a non-native speaker I don't get what's supposed to be so stiff or hard to read on the European translation.
But I also think NoA's translation is kinda cute and don't get all the hate that one is getting. It's charming in my book and I'd prefer it to the European one, if I could choose.
There are ways to make references and shoutouts without ruining the experience for those sick of them or who aren't familiar with them. Just dropping it in there randomly is just terrible and lazy writing and will make the game look dated in the eyes of those "in the know" and confusing for everyone else after a few years (hell, I imagine there are people seeing it now and being confused, possibly thinking the translation is just terrible). Memes and references are basically writing crutches. You can get away with writing crutches in many styles of writing and speech but comedy writing is probably hardest to do it well in.
Nobody is upset, it's just corny that they're spouting memes at us. I guess I just expect better from Nintendo.
Are they? It seems like a few here and there. I think you guy/gals are overreacting to silly jokes aimed at kids in mostly family focused games.Nobody is upset, it's just corny that they're spouting memes at us. I guess I just expect better from Nintendo.
and I want a 1 to 1 translation of the original. which in this case would be the japanese version.
"Engrish" is kinda racist and "Whoodini" doesn't exist, so yeah.
German is my mother tongue of course I heard my fair share of bad Happy Birthday songs but that doesn't make it a well founded cliché.
Yes some words that make the "th" a sort of "f" are difficult but other than that it's fine.
Surely you mean "Buh-bye Sammy!"ITT: People who don't know what cringe means.
This example isn't that bad, and it's in a silly game. I don't see the big deal at all.
Now if it was Metroid and Ridley just sent Samus flying into outer space, followed up by saying "Bye Felicia." then I'd probably agree that the meme usage is getting out of hand.
Surely you mean "Buh-bye Sammy!"
Mmemes and personality in writing are opposites.#TeamTreehouse
I like their personality in writing.
You actually don't want that. You just don't realize it.
A lot of guys from back then got fired when they hadn't sold enough Pokeymans.I do as well. The german Nintendo translations also always been heavily influenced by the current Zeitgeist (especially during the SNES days), I am actually missing this quite a bit in the current games (they aren't translated inhouse anymore IIRC).
Pretty sure they had British localisation/localization long before that.the catalyst for Nintendo doing different english localizations was Mario Party 8, whose english script used a word benig in the US but highly offensive in the UK, which caused the game to be recalled:
Can't say I am a fan of your example, but I haven't played the game so I don't know how prevalent it is.
Treehouse hasn't done me wrong before.
