Seattle's gum wall, which has even been contributed to by some of our very own, is getting steamed away. A million pieces be damned.

Gum wall 2 coming soon though

These weird communal things over nothing are always interesting and I wish they were left alone, though yea I can't imagine it's sanitary at all.

Aw, my gum. :( I usually take friends there when they come to visit. Not gonna lie, it's gross as hell, and I usually don't breathe too deeply when I go down there. But it's pretty iconic, and I'll be sad to see it clean. I'm sure people will waste no time filling it up again, though.

Also OP 20 years would be 1995 not 1985.

Yeah typo, I had to type the thread twice and I assure you I attributed it to 90s grunge the moment I read it

I'm not a guy that grosses easily, I've eaten cooked bugs, I've been elbow deep inside an a dead animal's guts.

however I have an unexplainable phobia of gum.

I find it disgusting, and not just old gum stuck to stuff, I mean people blowing bubble gum bubbles too. hell, I won't even chew a normal stick of gum, which is weird since I used to have no problems with it when I was a kid.

that wall is a thing of nightmares.

This reminds me of that bridge in Paris that people would put locks on as a sign of their unbreaking love bonds that they had to forcibly remove a few months ago because it was literally weighing the bridge down.

They're replacing it with plexiglass to prevent people from doing it anymore.

Except that locks are less prone to being full of diseases. They're just heavier.

After the cleaning is over, people will be allowed to keep the tradition going by adding more gum.

“We’re not saying it can’t come back,” Emily Crawford, a spokeswoman for the Pike Place Market Preservation & Development Authority, told the Seattle Times. “We need to wipe the canvas clean and keep fresh.”

It looks like it will come back. Good. The gum wall is awesome. It's just incredibly fascinating to look at.

My name is Mike Rowe, and this is Dirty Jobs.

Ten million other problems around Pike and they choose to nuke the gum wall.

How about we nuke all of the junkies, "parking attendants" and other vagrants first?

I love the wall! It was so impressively disgusting and incredible at the same time!

The great news is that I hope there will be plenty of space for me to put a piece of gum :=)
