I think the gum wall is important to the culture of the city. The people of Seattle historically have been powerful at keeping things intact, like when they voted to demolish Pike Place. It's good that they're at least allowing it to come back. It's more than just gum.

I love the gum wall, but on the other hand it's probably unsanitary as fuck. I'm not against steaming it clean every once in a while and letting it start again for sanitary reasons.

That being said, I was in Seattle twice this year, but I guess it was a different part of the city. Too bad I only heard of it and now it's being cleaned up.
