RTTP: The Pokemon. All 721 of them, and counting.

Eh it flies fine, and it actually has a standing animation. It's more on GF forcing specific poses.
Forcing a specific pose in a mode that you spend 99% of your time in might as well not even have the standing animation.

Flying battles are easily one of the worst additions to X Y entirely because of how badly it destroys the design of several flying types

Almost every Flying Pokémon in the 6th generation was a major misfire and reason why I skipped out on using any of them when playing Omega Ruby, especially since I don't need a Pokémon to fly from town to town any more. That said, much as I like Xatu's design, does anyone find the eye nipples... odd?

EDIT: Why is Gliscor hovering and Hawlucha not? It can't even learn Fly!

On the positive side, the one flying type that isn't a misfire is awesome lol. Noivern is great too.

Some of you guys need to stop exagerrating about the animations of flying types in XY. Only the hovering ones look terrible and there's not really a lot of them. The ones that are actually flapping their wings like Pidgeot and Staraptor look fine. They would look really stupid standing on the ground.

I mostly just lurk this thread, but Natu/Xatu was one of my favorites as a kid. I think it's pretty cool how the design is meant to be like those tribal drawings and it appears in the one area of the game where tribal drawings are featured.

Eh I disagree, the only one with weird flying animation is Swellow, it's supposed to diving with that pose, not flying!

LOVE Xatu so much. Unfortunately I've never used one, its ingame move set kinda sucks even in HG. I have one in OR that I used when battling online and it's pretty decent with Magic Bounce, though it was never amazing since its stats are average. But the design was always on point p

Xatu was my resident psychic type in G/S when I was a kid. I'll relive my old team in HG/SS one day after I've finished playing Diamond.

And yes, while I adore XY/ORAS and think they're among the best Pokemon games, Xatu is completely ruined in battle from the constant gliding animation.

Xatu is cool-looking, but as you said its in-game leanset is terrible in Gen 2. Thank God Gamefreak made it better in Gen 6.

I've always loved Natu/Xatu's designs, they add diversity to Pokémon. I want to see a Xatu and Cofagrigus team to keep the ruins theme going. Also, pretty sure Xatu is a quetzal as they share very similar colours. Don't think too hard.

If we ever see a sequel to Pokemon Snap, I want to see a Ruins level with these Pokemon.

  • Natu/Xatu
  • Unown
  • Baltoy/Claydol
  • The Regi trio
  • Bronzor/Bronzong
  • Sigilyph
  • Yamask/Cofagrigus
  • Golett/Golurk
  • Honedge/Doublade/Aegislash

Xatu's my absolute favourite Pokemon design. Wished it was more competitive.

BTW, Watch Da Birdie - Did anyone tell you this thread is incredible? The sheer volume and quality of your writeups is just tremendous. I am enjoying going through this thread as it covers a big chunk of my teenage years thus far.

Up until X and Y, Staraptor was always shown on the ground.

Pigeot on the flip side is usually shown flying, so that's fine.

Birds generally can't remain hovering like that. So it does look unnatural in most cases.

The only birds that remain in constant hovering flight like that are hummingbirds (and insects). As there are no hummingbird Pokemon, for the most part, every Pokemon should be fully grounded.

Although for Pokemon like Wingul or Fearow, it looks fine for them to be in mid air. And for Zubat's family it would be basically nonsensical for 2/3 of them to be on the ground as Zubat doesn't even have feet, and Crobat basically never lands on its dinky little feet.

I don't mind Pigeot grounded or in the air, likely because in Stadium Pigeot was constantly flying and it looked fine.

I used a Togepi in my original silver team, oh the fun to be had with Metronome.

One time Togepi used Metronome and triggered Sacred Fire and then the next turn triggered Aeroblast. Made fighting Bugsy waaaay to easy.

Also I like to call Natu telephone as it cry sounds like a phone ringing.

Speaking of Pokémon cry, I don't like how they changed Charizard's cry in gen 6.

This pretty much, the hovering one look odd and out of place.

Haha, no.

Honestly I hope that Game Freak gives flying type two sets of model, one on ground and one in the sky should they decide to keep Sky battle around.

It may not be an issue for you, but I wouldn't write it off completely. There's a reason so many people have the same complaint.

Swellow, Skarmory, Honchkrow, Fearow, Scyther, Xatu, Tropius (and most of their pre-evolutions) all look pretty bad imo because of their flying animations. Staraptor, Pidgeot, Unfezant, Swanna and Braviary don't look bad I guess, would look much better standing. Hell, even Charizard, Salamence and Dragonite should have default standing poses.

Fearow would look odd grounded. He's never been shown grounded at all, I don't even think the anime has shown him grounded. His box sprite doesn't even have him grounded.

They should just go by what their official art shows them as. So Pokemon like Pigeotto, Pigeot, Fearow, Zubat, Golbat, Crobat, Braviary, Wingul and Pelipper would be shown in the air. Along with near every flying bug Pokemon. And Mantine. Also basically every levitate or floating Pokemon as well. Interestingly, this includes Flygon, as he's flying in his official art. But Elektross should remain grounded.

Also lol

I think hovering animations look ace. Specifically mega pidgeot, swellow and tropius (yes, tropius)

Of course, no one can beat this magnificent son of a bitch and his son.

With Tropius, it's a matter of how stupid it looks.

Ok, yea, he's a flying type. And yea, he can fly. But that's just a game mechanic and a bit of lore. When he's actually shown flying, it looks ridiculous and silly. He's a giant dinosaur.

Also no bird except hummingbirds can just hover/flap in place like that. Flying takes a lot of energy, and so most birds don't do it if they can help it, or "cheat" and use thermals or other tricks to reduce energy used. It's okay for a few flying types like Zubat or Fearow to remain in constant flight, as they're usually shown able to do so, but not 75% of flying types.

Much like Tropius, there's a lot of flying types that we just kind of pretend are flying types, in the back of ours minds and don't really think about how silly it would be for them to fly. You see a Tropius Sprite and you just think "he's Grass/Flying, okay" and your imagination just sort of fills in the blanks. So we don't need to be reminded front and center that these Pokemon fly when they clearly should not be able to.

Also quite a lot of these Pokemon were never designed for constant flight, and so they have details on their bodies you can't see well when flying. Like Xatu and Skarmory.

Tropius has always been somewhat of a dumb concept tho people have wondered why the fuck is he flying type since the beginning of times.

Also, I just realized that we need Mega Tropius.

Well then I guess GameFreak is like Sakurai because they love destroying ideas fan have about their own creations. Tropius has been using flying type attacks for years, but all of all sudden he's in constant fly in his model and now it's a problem? Just because your mind never thought about it too much and you have this notions of what should and shouldn't be able fly doesn't actually mean much to the people making the games.

And yeah no animal should be able to be in constant flight like that in real life, but we're talking about a video game here so please stop with the real life logic in a game that involves monkeys breathing fire. Internal combustion like that would require a lot of energy that these Pokemon should be dead after 1 or two attacks with the energy they spent.

Pokemon like Skarmory and Pelipper couldn't really fly either, so it's not limited to just Tropius being a big fat dinosaur.

Although Pelipper flying doesn't bother me much, as it's always been shown flying, except in Colosseum.

Oh man Tropius, I remember first seeing that thing and thinking it looked tough as shit, boy was I disappointed when I caught one and saw how weak it was.

So did Girafarig, which was another oddball to be in Gen 3. Might as well throw in Stantler or Quilfish at that point.

I guess they were stretched for second gen Pokemon that weren't just babies or new evolutions. Or who weren't Skarmory.

And somehow despite having a tremendously huge area of water to travel that could use some pokeon variety, they didn't bring back Mantine to pop up as a surfing rarity.
Which makes me think, if you bring in Mantine to a regional dex is Remoraid required as well?

Really? I knew that Tropius would be a disappointment the instant I saw him. I don't know whether it's because I've played Pokemon for so long that it's become second nature to be able to tell whether a Pokemon is going to be good or not, but Pokemon which turn out to be top tier material often have this "look" and aura about them, something which Tropius severely lacked.

I like how they did the flying animation for Charizard, not too weird but still showing him flying...even if he's only a few feet off the ground. ¬_¬;

Yes, they have always been together.

Yes, I was a little kid and most of the Pokémon I saw up to that point were on the smaller side. Tropius had some size to it and looked like some dinosaur thing.

Why would a creature who has such a hard time flying and is more adapted to land fly all the time?

Well I didn't say it was appropriate at all times (as is the case with most sky battle animations) but this is exactly what I picture in my head if he should fly lol. That's the reason it gets a pass from me compared to some of the other flying poke animations.

Oh, got some catching up to do

I always liked Chinchou's GB cry. Like some low chiptune burp. Super nostalgic.

Togetic was a bit of a lame evolution I found. Some weird egg being with wings. Then it evolves into a kite. Still waiting for a more regular, normal-type chicken monster.

Jesus, that magazine gallery. Fuckin' Shuckle man.

But I don't see how it looks weird on the rest though.
