Star Wars Battlefront: PS4 is outdoing Xbox and PC combined [in concurrency numbers]

What's even more interesting is that the Xbox One figure will be inflated due to EA Access trials. I'd expect 90k true Xbox players. So that emphasizes how dominant PS4 version is.

As I predicted.

New MP shooters for PC platform tend not to do well.

Likely more to do with EA stubbornness with Origin. Releasing on Steam would generate healthier figures.

For 300k overall at a given time, what is the ratio average to that figure against total who own it? Can get an estimate for total sales figures from this information surely.

considering how much more PS4's are circulating world wide is that really that crazy of a number after being bundled with the console?

Yes, we're sure these numbers are worldwide. If they seem particularly low, it's because there was an undercurrent of belief here that this game would sell millions and millions at launch. I'm thinking that doesn't happen.

why would a online shooter have mod support? I think the more logical answer console version tend to sell better.

Did you really just ask why an online shooter would have mod support? Mod support has been in online PC shooters since Doom. Even the new CoD is getting mod support on PC.......

It's the first weekend after release. I don't know anything about peaks in online games but shouldn't it be safe to assume that we'll see greater numbers this weekend?

I don't even know why publishers/developers even bother with porting their games to PC with numbers like these. I don't know of any games on PC that even come close 170K concurrent players. I feel bad for that think that platform is on the rise. You'd figure PC gamers would have a higher concurrent player base for this game since they don't really have anything worthwhile to play on their machines.
What. I don't even know how someone could have this train of thought.

More maps, game modes, customization, community engagement? Historically all of the most successful PC shooters have had extensive mod support.

He got butt hurt because he was basically told that there are masses of people who buy this basically for the name and image, in other words sheep. He got butt hurt but he ignored the validity of the point, the more complex games are the best selling games on pc. As a non pc gamer, I can appreciate the fact that most pc games rise and fall on the validity of their content and the quality they present, at least when it comes to standard $60 games. In general, pc is less about what's commercially viable. Whereas console gamers are more about what's in with the crowd, which explains cod, and also explains the higher entry to loading up a pc game in general. Pc gamers are just more engaged, in general, and console gamers seem to be more about following the crowd, IN GENERAL. Of course, as with any broad sweeping generalizations, there are exceptions to the rule.

I like how ps4 owners only buy bf4 because they have nothing to play but those numbers on xbox are totally not influenced by ea access.

I just wanted to point this out here because i've been seeing a ridiculous trend from some people that like to believe Twitch viewership is a great indicator of how big a game is

Concurrent players total right now as i clicked on it : 192,343
Total Twitch viewership: 5,233

Just to gain some perspective.

I think it not being on Steam is really hurting the game on the PC side. Not being available to the Steam ecosystem...I mean, Steam is more than just a store front.

Steam is not everything on PC. There are plenty of successful games that will never hit Steam and still selling millions on PC. Like all the Blizzard games or LoL (or MS published games) for example. BF on PC just didn't sell good enough to stay in range to the console numbers. But that is hardly surprising for an AAA game on PC. They always selling more on consoles.

So; a console ported multiplayer game on a platform infamous for not being AAA frontloaded and having an huge library of popular mp games - and the game isn't even sold on Steam.. Sales numbers perhaps not so surprising in that context, no?

And in the same note you could have said it helped with some sales, because there were those who said they enjoyed it enough to buy it.

It goes both ways, really.

Yeah, it probably cancels out.

Anyway, I don't see why these stats are surprising considering the PS4's bigger user base and the game coming free in bundles. I was honestly expecting higher numbers but I guess that could change after Black Friday.

There is a bit. Compared to say the top six highest viewed games on Twitch, Battlefront's peak concurrent number is absolutely dwarfed by all of them. The game is just not as popular as those top games even recent ones like BO3 and F4, there's a correlation between that and Twitch popularity. But yeah the further down you get the muddier it is.

MP only shooters never do very well anyhow. That's users at a given time, not total sales.

Come on MP only shooters like Counter Strike, Time Splitters or Unreal Tournament sold good in the past, especially on PC (if available). It's not like Titanfall and Battlefront are a new thing.

Numbers on PC aren't surprising at all its a console orintated game that made questionable design choices to lock it down and keep it console focused, it's not going to have long legs at all on PC.

People thinking mods are the reason it isn't selling extremely well on PC are deceiving themselves. We know the #1 reason, no need for me to state it. Compared to previous Battlefronts it speaks for itself. #2 is that there's more competition on PC, so in conjunction with the first people on PC can simply be more discerning. Nobody on PC ever expected EA to allow any sort of modding on Frostbite. That has minimal bearing on why people didn't buy it.

Custom maps, custom game modes, total conversions.Team Fortress started off as a Quake World mod, both Red Orchestra and Killing Floor came from UT2K4.

Frostbite has never had mod support or modern dice games in general and not that many modern AAA shooters support mods. My point is there is literally zero precedent for this. Mods don't make sales as much as some of you may think I mean look at bf4 or bf3 or even bfbc2 and you'll get your answer.

PS4 PS4 PS4 PS4 PS4 PS4 PS4 PS4 PS4 PS4 PS4 PS4 PS4 PS4 PS4 PS4 PS4 Xbone PS4 PS4
The main reason I got this on PS4 rather than PC is because it's not on Steam.

You mean before we knew how crap the PC version was?

The pc version is solid (in terms of performance, bugs and all). Maybe pc players realized the game is not that good? I bought into the hype too and I had found the game fun playing the beta on drop pod mode.

Game release and while it's gorgeous and well optimized it plays like crap, it's unbalanced, and just not fun overall to play. Why waste hard cash and time on this when there are better experience on the platform to be had?

no surprise here , haven't seen any one of my little PC gaming community to even thinking about buying it for various reasons:
1) MP only game for 60 bucks,
no galactic conquest
2) no space battes
3) way low on content compared to previous battlefronts
4) impressions from beta:
- felt like reskinned battlefield
- after while of fun it was more boring than even Hardline
- no substance
- no depth.
5) Origin + Denuvo

I guess even great licence can't save mediocre game on PC

These are pretty normal concurrency numbers for Battlefield.

They just aren't the types of games you generally have astronomical concurrency on.

i didnt say it plays like it - just that it feels more like battlefield than like battlefront (from what i played from beta)
- but still that was the least important point in my post
at it was just a list of reasons my friends told me why they are not buying it - not my full thoughts about it (I personally was insanely disappointed with beta and even though i love SW license I will not pay even 20 bucks let alone 60 for mediocre mp-only game )

Is there a reason for that? People were thinking the Star Wars brand would push this further than what a Battlefield game would go. Especially next to Fallout 4 and CoD these numbers look small.

You'd think with the much install base of PS4, the number would be higher between Xbox One and them. Is EA Access numbers being tracked in that? Just curious? I know shooters still tend to do really well on Xbox One even though PS4 now outsells. How do these numbers line up with battlefield 4, Hardline? I wouldn't be surprised if the poor reviews, no single player also lowered sales more than they'd have liked. Still will sell like gangbusters though.
