Why? Just land down on a planet and that's the same thing. Or is there something else that restarting gives you?

Just the newbie experience from a different perspective. When I get to try the beta, I'll probably do it with a new CMDR as well. I want to see how starting out from the surface feels compared to starting out in the space station, where season 1 players started. ;p

Why not?

I am in a hauler running around with no shields.

How do I even get ready for SRV stuff?

I was just curious about your comment regarding rumours of 'getting the full experience' only if you restart. If it's just that you start on a planet, then you can fly around and land on planets anyway (if you have the modules); so you don't need to restart to see that. You can just land somewhere and you're good.

Of course, restarting may also give you the SRV and landing modules anyway; so that's cool I guess. Just curious if there anything more to restarting that's all.

Well Ill probably pull the trigger, but is there any disadvantage in getting the steam version? Or should I go to Frontier's website and get the discounted version. It's also a little cheaper for me on Steam.

I think I read somewhere that Horizons on steam isn't going to be launching at the same time as Horizons on their own website?

AFAIK, Steam doesn't have any disadvantages. I haven't heard anything about a delayed release, but that wouldn't make much sense to me.

Steam DOES take a cut from the sale, of course, so if you want to directly support FD, buy from their store.

I'm so excited to try out this expansion but I don't think I can play this game on a monitor for any serious length of time; VR is too perfect.

I'll come back when I get a consumer headset.

edit: Unless I can get the game running judder-free on DK2, I mean! I had a lot of trouble with that earlier.

Just a reminder that you need to buy two modules before you can land on a planet/drive a scarab, one of which occupies a size 5 bay (hanger module). Saw that in a YouTube, saved me quite a bit of confusion and frustration.

There are smaller class hanger bays though. I think that size 5 hangar holds two SRV's, while the smaller one only holds one SRV.

Junior, please.
Definitely looking forward to getting back into this and trying out landing on planets. I'll wait for the non-Beta version though, I like sticking with my saved game rather than playing on the test server.

Elite Dangerous is on sale, if I buy it, will I get a discount on this, how much does this expansion cost? Does the expansion include the base game?

The Expansion include the base game but if you buy the Base game you get a discount on Horizons (15$ I think so it's pretty much a win win right now)

Though please verify I'm not sure of my numbers.

im really interested in this game...but i have no idea what you do.

is it just flying around? like...like what....what do you do????

Fly around, shoot spaceships, deliver cargo and trade. The goal is to make enough money to buy new ships, upgrade them to the tits and repeat.

Does anyone have details on the two internal modules you need for planetary landings? I'd like to add info on that, plus the restart method, to the OP.

I think the first is called Planetary Insertion Module for like 50cr

and the other one is Planetary Vehicule Hangar.

Is this a hilarious meme now? Some kind of No Man's Sky comparison?

The Elite series hasn't changed much since 1984. Buy goods in one station, sell them for a profit in another station, upgrade existing ship or buy a new one. You can also shoot shit for money.

Can anyone comment on whether they fixed the depth of space for the occulus/3d modes?

I got pulled out of the experience pretty fast when the vastness of space appeared to be a flat texture about 8 feet in front of me.

FD has stated they aren't touching VR support again until retail SDKs are available.

Some info on performance from FD:

Hey guys,

With all that is going on right now, we appreciate that the most important thing to many of you is actually being able to enter the Horizons Beta. This is something we are acutely aware of and are working furiously on as a priority.

However for those of you who are in and able to play, he's some of our findings regarding performance on planetary surfaces related to the kind of system you're running.

The planetary shaders we use are very, very advanced, and will cause a significant hit. The framerate on planets will be lower than the rest of the game. Generally we would suggest setting the new terrain quality in the graphics options menu one level lower than the rest of the quality settings for the beta.

On the recommended setting, you can currently expect 45 fps on high settings and 1080p. 4k or 1440p will struggle, but may stay at 30 fps. SLI may provide some extra performance, however Crossfire does not appear to work so well.

Regarding SLI, EliteDangerous64.exe is not natively recognised by NVIDIA as requiring SLI under current drivers, so you may need to manually add those settings while NVIDIA make those changes.

To make those changes, you need to go to the NVIDIA Control Panel and add EliteDangerous64.exe. The settings for SLI will then automatically be applied.

Lower spec cards should choose a lower terrain setting.

A 970 or 980 or higher can do ultra without dropping much below 60 or showing pop in. 4k gaming is possible, but rather around 40 fps with this setting.

It is possible to cause your shaders to crash when starting the game in too high settings. So if this happens to you or if you see bad performance or much popping in with the terrain, set the quality lower, quit the game, delete the GpuWorkTable.xml and run the game again.

Of course if you encounter significant problems, please send us in a ticket or describe them here in this thread.

If you discover a bug, please report it to the Planetary Landings bug report forum.

We hope you're having an amazing time exploring the newest frontier Elite: Dangerous has to offer!

I also found this info on reddit regarding finding points of interest:

I figure this could use a PSA, because it isn't very evident in game. When you are looking for planetary points of interest, either for a mission or otherwise, they appear passively as you fly, like signal sources do.
Unlike signal sources, they do not appear in world space, they appear on your radar as a dark blue circle. You want to be flying normally above the planet, not in glide mode, and not in orbital cruise. I tend to have more luck at higher altitudes, above around 5KM. I'm not sure if that makes a difference, but it seems to for me.
As you fly towards the circle, it will shrink. You want to land in it, and deploy your SRV, then use the wave scanner to find the object in question. Hopefully this will save someone else hours of frustration.
The annoying part is once you have deployed your SRV the POI magically spawns. Then you can get back into your ship and pewpew. C'mon we're not exiting supercruise or something. Spawn the crashed ship or whatever without me having to get into my SRV to see what it is please!!!
EDIT: I've also had several spawn on some pretty difficult terrain to land on. Landing just outside the circle and trying to drive in doesn't seem to create the actual point of interest when then approached with an srv. :-S

I think the first is called Planetary Insertion Module for like 50cr

and the other one is Planetary Vehicule Hangar.

Does the Scarab have to be purchased, too?

no, i never played it before, literally just didnt know what you did

I think it is not working yet. Is not a problem that Frontier can solve themselves as is some incompatibility between some feature of the latest versions of the Oculus SDK and the shaders that they use in Dx11, or something like that If I recall correctly.

I think there is some old version of the SDK that still works.

Oculus doesn't seem to be very stressed about solving the issue in a timely manner, even when Frontier is offering to help to solve it as quick as possible...

AFAIK Oculus software and third party relations are a mess, constantly doing changes that break compatibility and not offering solutions to stuff like this :(

Sorry didn't see this immediately, that's a shame. Elite has very little value to me without VR compatibility. Hopefully it picks up Vive support later on, I'll get back in when that happens.

Some really weird things being talked about in that previous post regarding VR, most of which are untrue.

FD stopped chasing the ever changing Oculus beta SDK at 0.5. FD is on the record as saying they will have full Vive and Rift support the moment the final release SDKs are released. FD simply didn't want to waste dev cycles on third party beta software.

H/T to DrBo42: "Elite Dangerous: Horizons - CMDR Training Live" is now live streaming.

EDIT: Info from the stream on orbital cruise, etc:

Orbital Cruise
  • Reached when you fly close to a planet (within its "blue ring" as you approach)
  • The HUD indicates which stage of planetary flight--check the vertical altimeter bar to the right of the HUD
    • OC: You are in Orbital Cruise if your meter is below the OC indicator. If you reach a high enough altitude from the surface (i.e., your meter goes above "OC"), you automatically go back into Supercruise.
    • DRP: You are low enough to automatically drop into Glide.
  • The blue altimeter readings are actually not related to landing, but rather flying around the planet. The blue area indicates the best course heading to travel quickly around the planet, to help you get to points of interest faster

Glide
  • Again, once your altimeter hits DRP, you drop into Glide mode automatically
  • Glide is designed to transition you to the surface
  • In Glide, blue altimeter readings actually indicate a safe heading down to the surface--too high up and you obviously go back into OC and too low is unsafe (note the red warning area in the second shot

A look at synthesis:

q659B3V.png

I think you discover materials just from roving surfaces and mining/scooping them--not sure how you discover recipes.

What's the list of Synthesis? And what they do basically? (If you want)

Each synthesized resource serves a purpose, but there are three tiers for each resource, as you can see in the screen.

The first tier seems to be expressly about utility. In this case, you can synthesize fuel source for your SRV.

However, you'll notice in my screen we're looking at the second tier, which lists a bonus +50% shield overcharge. Third tier would likely be a 100% boost.

Yes, I saw and find this pretty cool. But I meant, what is the remaining list? Ammo? Shield? Fuel? Repair Kits?

Okay how exactly do I use a Data Point? I just see this when I go into turret mode and am locked onto the Data Point. Pressing my Data Link Scanner button does nothing. Anyone know?

Isn't there a scanner or something? Check in the controls, I'm sure there is such a ''tool'' that the SRVs use.

Yeah, the Data Point Scanner, and it's even in the fire gropus, and you can bind a seperate key/button to it. Beyond that, I'm not sure what to do. Pressing the button bound to it or the fire group button does nothing.

EH eh eh... when in doubt.... shoot it with Lazers?

It didn't do anything. I found a few more of them and they all did the same thing, as well as a comms tower, which did the the same thing. The turrets and defence platforms were coming back online, so I decided to bail and go somewhere else.

Also it's kind of funny, the pedestrian boarding stairs drop when you have your ship landed, but your SRV passes right through them.
