Sony leaks Dark Cloud PS2 for PS4

Not surprised, it is shitty but I didn't expect anything else. I'm curious about the price and what titles will be coming. Really would like to play some jrpgs I may have missed and whole lot more.

This is probably just a generic marker. Afterall it says ps2 classics are incompatible with ps4, after being a ps2 classic running on ps4 (well atleast one can hope so)

Hmmm...guess I'm in the minority here (and the UC4 new character thread lol) that thinks this is awesome news? I'm sorry guys, but the whole playing older games doesn't cut it, I never played any of the ps2 classics even on my PS3, most games look terrible and I would much rather have things remastered and buy stuff over.

This is honestly a case where I think GAF and maybe forums in general is completely out of touch with more mainstream gamers. People are going back playing crash bandicoot, twisted metal black, etc...I mean, I would much rather have remakes and HD emulation.

Yeah, I lost all interest in PS2 backward compatibility when I saw that. Having to download games I already own on disc is mildly annoying. Having to pay to play them again feels like I'm being given a giant middle finger.

Nintendo got railed brcause they charged an upgrade fee. I was fine with the upgrade fee to help offset the additional work, but people shouldn't have to pay full price for a couple additional features they may not even care about. Why not provide a discount, though maybe there's still a chance???

Oh ok, so you know how much these are going to cost? Mind sharing that with the rest of us?

If what I described is a remaster, so be it. What I described is what they are selling.

I just dont get the outrage over this.

Let's all simmer down until PSX. There might be cross buy support for people who have already bought games under the "PS2 Classics" category.

As for disc support, we all knew that was so not coming. People were hoping too much for their own good.

I'd rather pay a reasonable amount to have it in my digital collection, especially if the game is getting a little love in the process.

So fucking happy that I can soon play Dark Cloud 2 in 1080p and with trophies! Now I'm just hoping it's out before the Christmas holiday.

I just hope Sony provides entire library of PS2. There are lots of great PS2 games I would like to revisit. I'm glad they are offering upgraded visuals and trophy support.

Can't wait for this thing to support 9 games in Europe before the PS5 comes out, with the vague promise that they'll bring Killzone 1 and Tekken 4 over to the PS5 "at some point".

PS1 and PS2 classics is in pretty big part fueled by enthusiast gamers like gaf users. Most "mainstream" gamers will ignore re-releases of games old games like Suikoden or Dark Cloud, whether they're upscaled or not.

Are you really a sucker though? I think the people up in arms are a very small part of console gamers. My ps2 is up in some closet somewhere with broken controllers and missing cords. The few games I'm so fond of I want to play again I would happily buy again for higher quality emulation. The gamers that have a hundred game collection of each console in each generation, man you guys just don't represent the market like you think you do. If Sony has an Nintendo like system in place to start putting older games on ps4, I'm in...dunno what the negative posts are about.

Yea I'm hoping the same. I wonder how strategy games would run on the ps4 as I'm betting They ran like shit on ps2. I can only recall playing ps1 strategy games though so I could be wrong. I'm not bothered about trophys but it's good it's there for those who are.

I'd be willing to pay a small fee if they were getting some actual improvements beyond simply being upscaled and having trophies added. We didn't have to pay extra to have our PS3s play our PS1 discs, so I'm not sure why we're okay with this now.

Are people expecting Sony to give a remaster of a game for free just because they have the disk? I am sure it costs them money to remaster it and they are not a charity organisation.

FFX, X-2, Valkyria Chronicles, Gravity Rush, etc...are not being ignored. They are being bought multiple times. And the pill is not hard to swallow because the last time I bought one of these games was half a decade ago, why would I be upset about buying the same game over. I mean, fan service is nice, it would be cool if some ps2 Classic emulation would be free, or at least some ps1 emulation, but you know that PS3 is still alive and kicking. How much ps1 gaming is going on on that platform I wonder. I feel like people just want this stuff to say "Tks nice guy Sony" but not because they actually want to take advantage of it. Give me a remaster any day of the week.

I bought the PS2 Contra games on PSN like a month ago. Not having to re-buy them to play on PS4 would not be "fan service", it would just be common sense. I don't re-buy my mp3s every time I upgrade to a new phone...

1080p and trophies were in the original version?
This is all done by the emulator. The game's code and assets are unaltered from the original release.

These games will be upscaled to fit the screen, that's all it really is. This shouldn't be compared to actual remasters where the devs go back to touch up the textures and add content.

Ok sorry my knowledge of how that works is very limited. Dick move I agree. I think there is a lot of people who don't have their disks any more and would love to try these games again, so charge them and not people who have a physical copy.

Upscaled =/= Increasing internal res.

Upscaling is merely the stretching of the aspect ratio to fit your TV screen. Increasing internal res is actually increasing the resolution of the game to higher than it originally was.

Many remasters such as Dishonored HD really do only increase native res and things like that compared to their last gen counterparts. And although we call them lazy, they are still considered enhanced ports.

Of course this does not detract from your original point. Just because they are enhanced at far above their original res with trophies and better framerate, they should not be considered 'new games' that people who already bought them on PSN should have to buy again, atleast for full price.

Does it have to be coded on a game-by-game basis or can an emulator do it across every game?

"PS2 Classics and PS2-Formatted discs are incompatible with the PS4 system."

Fuck this shit. Especially the PS2 Classics part.

No way in hell I'm purchasing a PS2 game on PSN for the second time.

They're incompatible, it doesn't say 'you need to buy them again' (and disc support was never likely to be a thing). Journey PS3 is incompatible with PS4, and yet...

I'll be really disappointed if the ones that are Cross-buy with Vita, PS3 and PSP aren't with PS4 too, Trophies aren't enough to justify another purchase from me, and I doubt they'll look much different than the other versions.

It depends on the emulator in question and the compatibility rate.

For the one Sony is using right now for PS4, it seems they choose different resolutions based on each specific game for best performance metrics.

Since it is old code just running straight through an emulator, not everything is going to just automatically run at full speed i suppose. That CPU of the PS4 is lower than an i3 after all.

Luckily, the horsepower of the PS4 makes it so that every PS2 game will see a huge increase in IQ by default, above 720p at the very least.

Oh, I didn't consider that. Strange wording from their part then.

I guess we'll have to wait a couple of days until we get the full picture.

Neither do i buy DVDs every couple years. Problem is there is no universal console or format that plays everything. The closest thing is PC. So yeah your argument seems entitled at best and just weak overall, the gaming industry doesn't have a standard, you can play contra on the system you bought it on.

Oh ok, thanks for the explanation!

Guess it isn't as easy as just packing the iso in an emulator shell and calling it a day, then.

That's what we mean by digital licenses. They should be able to recognize if you have the same game on PS4 that you already bought on Vita/PSTV/PS3, and unlock the PS4 version according to your purchase history.

Hopefully Sony clarifies that is the case at PSX

Man, no disc support I expected, but not even PS2 classics support for shit I already bought? Weak- that's a good way to make me stop paying attention to anything they're doing with this. Hopefully it's just some weird description hijinks on Youtube, and the actual announcement is way better.

All the DVDs I ever bought worked on my PS2, PS3, PS4, not to mention Xbox, PC, etc. I know game emulation is more complex than video playback, but still.

I don't understand the complaints....

If you already have the game just.... Play it ?

If we have the game on Sony's digital service, we should be able to carry that over to their next service via crossbuy provided they make said game available. We NEED clarification on whether this is apart of their plan or not.

This has nothing to do with disc support
