EA: Our future games lineup is an "embarrassment of riches"; talks FY17/scheduling

Publishing giant Electronic Arts has labeled its lineup of upcoming games as an "embarrassment of riches." Speaking this week as part of the Credit Suisse Technology, Media, and Telecom conference, EA COO Peter Moore said fans of EA games have a lot to look forward to in the year ahead.

"It's a little bit of an embarrassment of riches particularly in [fiscal year 2017], which commences for us on April 1, 2016," Moore said in response to a question about EA's upcoming lineup. "We've got some of our core franchises; a new Battlefield coming up, a new Mass Effect title coming up; we actually kick off the year with Mirror's Edge Catalyst, which we pushed out of FY 16 and into FY 17.

"And we also have Mass Effect Andromeda from our BioWare studio. And Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 is shipping in Q4 of this [fiscal] year."
Moore's comments came in response to a question about some concerns that investors and analysts felt about EA's business performance in years when the company didn't launch a new Battlefield game. As Moore illustrates, EA's portfolio is quite deep, and he didn't even mention sports titles around the FIFA, UFC, and NBA franchises. Also in the call, Moore reiterated that a new Titanfall game is in the works for a release in EA's FY 2017, which runs April 1, 2016 through March 31, 2017.

Given that EA has a number of big-name games coming out, Moore said it's important that the company examines its schedule to ensure games don't cannibalize each other. He also pointed out that EA looks at the competition and formulates release plans accordingly.

"It's a high class problem to have
," Moore said.

I cannot wait for a new Battlefield. I really, really hope it's not set in the future though.

All I care about is Titanfall 2. Don't mess it up, Respawn!!!

In fact, I'd just be happy with Titanfall 2 being Titanfall 1 but on PS4.

EA getting ready to release a bunch of great games. Will definitely be getting Mass Effect, Mirror's Edge and Battlefield.

Well, I would be more sympathetic if they had included a single player campaign in Star Wars Battlefront.....

Need to see more from this line before my hype kicks in. I want Mass Effect but haven't seen anything worth while from it. Visceral's Star Wars game I hope is great but yet nothing to go on. Mirror's Edge is the only game I'm sold on right now.

Can we say "embarrassment and riches" instead? With exception of Mirror's Edge, all of these games are part of a painfully stale formula and/or shameful annualized shovelware and/or designed to be more safe in the market than they are there for refreshing gaming experiences. They're shipped to be the bare minimum of something they feel people are willing to pay for and they draw in millions of people a year with it.

There's little denying that EA has mastered the art of "making video games for the purpose of maximizing revenue"--that results in happy investors--but certainly not "making video games for the sake of making good games." Endless games of extremely average reception for AAA titles and games of perhaps slightly-above-average entertainment levels. Rarely if ever anything considered innovative, revolutionary, GOTY-tier or otherwise.

Yup, i can't wait for Titanfall 2 but i hope it's richer in features than the first one.

Only thing I really care about. People didn't found the first one super pretty, but it wasn't ugly either (on PC at least). The movement and everything should at least be as good as the original.

I just want more interesting locations (more alien locations) more interactions with the monsters that were mostly background in the last game. More modes, maybe an awesome sci-fi storyline. More types of titans. Have the smartgun removed.

Have more types of ai-bots that progress as the match goes on instead of stopping at spectre. Perhaps have larger game modes with more players, with alsoh aving flying titans and stuff. That'd be epic.

Looks like itll make them tons of money, but personally I think the lineup looks like every other lineup they post with a subtitle changed, and utterly boring.

I hope EA has something new/surprising hidden in that lineup, because Battlefield, Mass Effect, Mirror's Edge and Mass Effect aren't quite the "embarrassment of riches" for me.

To be clear, the context was very literal in the talk.

They have three big selling games in a short window and they were answering a question about how they're going to avoid cannibalizing themselves.

Definitely will be getting Mirror's Edge and Mass Effect, absolutely can't wait to play them. Also curious that they did not mention Visceral's Star Wars game in there anywhere (unless I missed it). I figured it would be out sometime toward the end of 2016 or early 2017.

I'm interested in Mirror's Edge, maybe the next Mass Effect, but other than that most of their games don't appeal to me. Interested to see Amy Hennig's game at Visceral, and in probably 4 years whatever they are building with Jade Raymond.

Once Mass Effect is out in the wild, I'll be conspicuously absent from all other non-essential engagements for weeks. Mirror's Edge looks cool, too. And of course I'll remain hype for Amy Hennig Wars.

Other than that, it's all about other upcoming BioWare games for me. DA4, new IP. We won't be seeing either of those until at least FY18, though.

Outside of Mass Effect nothing he listed appeals to me.

Yep. And where the hell is Visceral's Star Wars game? Not until at least April 2017?? That would be disappointing. But I guess not particularly surprising since we've heard almost nothing about it.

I don't think that project started until 2014 or so. And it seems EA studios who build games from scratch using Frostbite 3 take longer than. The standard three year dev cycle (see: Bioware Montreal with Mass Effect or Bioware Austin).

I'm expecting Fall 2017. They've been clear they're not doing annual Star Wars games.

So glad to see an exec actually say this: "Given that EA has a number of big-name games coming out, Moore said it's important that the company examines its schedule to ensure games don't cannibalize each other. He also pointed out that EA looks at the competition and formulates release plans accordingly."

Lots of publishers seem to just dump stuff in horrible windows and then seem surprised when their game gets buried.

Will people spend $60 on Garden Warfare 2? I did enjoy the first one ...

Yeah I will probably pick it up. Was a blast to play and the economics of the game was fine and you never fellt like you had to spend real cash. Hope they allow more coop options though since both me and my GF liked it but was only one mode available.

Chili Con Carnage!
Amy Hennig is getting a hell of a lot of time to make that game then, I thought for sure we'd be getting at least 1 star wars game a year from EA. With the spin offs we're going to end up with more movies than games!

Probably a good thing and actually kind of admirable on EAs part, but definitely a surprise to me.
