Elite: Horizons (PLANETARY LANDINGS) out 12/15 - preorders play Elite NOW + trailer

Has there been any talk of Oculus goggles for this game on the Xbox One?

The console isn't anywhere near powerful enough unfortunately. It struggles to play games in 1080p at a steady 60fps on one screen so unless the games are going to be mega low poly with textures looking like a pile of pants and plenty of jaggies you won't find the console powering 2 x 1080p screens at 90fps without the console starting to melt. :Oo

The only Oculus Rift support that's available for the Xbox One is streaming Xbox One games in a VR environment on a big screen.

I don't see why you would want to?

Saw this shot on the official forums, DAMN I can't wait for this to release. This game is going to be even more addicting soon that it already is...

Well I'd have to go find a place to change my hauler (if it copies where its at location wise I am screwed lol) and prob add a shield.

Than find a planet

VS

Starting with a sidewinder that has both the landing module and a SRV and planet.

Can anyone comment on whether they fixed the depth of space for the occulus/3d modes?

I got pulled out of the experience pretty fast when the vastness of space appeared to be a flat texture about 8 feet in front of me.

Did you set it up correctly?
Because that shouldn't happen. For me it feels like looking at (a low res version of) the sky.

I mean, you aren't going to get much parallax effect because the stars are so far away, but it shouldn't feel like having a flat texture so close to you.

When you're flying over a planet (after Orbital Cruise), and you see blue circles on the sensors, what do those mean? Just suitable landing zones? I went down to them and there was nothing interesting there.

Those sound like points of interest. The blue is a general area but I think it's supposed to get smaller as you fly around and pinpoint where it is, exactly.

I can't find a hanger for my hauler -.-

How do I find one? Place had the landing module but I looked in every slot trying to find the hanger.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or user error, but the way I have my SRV controls set up, it's basically I use my HOTAS throttle to move forward (or gas if you will), and have a button I hold while moving the throttle to go in reverse. This is the same as how I do throttle and reverse throttle on my ship. I use the yaw axis on my flight stick to steer. However I have this really weird thing happen, and it's usually when I land from being airborne, where I suddenly just won't go forward anymore, even if I put the throttle all the way to 100. The way I get out of it is to toggle the hand brake and it works. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong here, or is this a bug I should be reporting?

To be fair, the actual focal distance of DK2 lens is set up around 1.5m or something like that, so it might help to explain the lack of depth for some people.

So I think I figured out the base raiding. Here's how it goes if I understand it correctly:

- As far as I know, going into bases with no mission is pointless, unless you really just want shit to shoot at and practice driving your SRV.
- Missions obtained from planetside or space stations can be on planets near you, or in another system. These will ask you to go to a base and do a specific thing.
- For some reason, these bases have lists of commodities they produce and prohibited commodities on the surface map. I'm not really sure what the point of this, but maybe there are missions related to it. None of them have a commodities market though.
- The things that missions might ask you to do may be something like "Destroy the fuel storage and terminal" which is one unit. There are also things like the power generator for the defense turrets, things like that. There can also be a red shield wall blocking you from part of the base, there may be something you have to destroy or interact with to get in.
- Some missions can ask you to interact with a Data Point or Communications Relay in a base. These things are pointless other than for these missions.
- Depending on the security of the base, and how powerful your ship is, flying over and taking out the defenses with your ship's weapons first, and then landing to drop your SRV can be a valid tactic. Be warned though, as these bases can sometimes have ships in addition to drones guarding them. Usually they aren't particularly powerful, but a ton of turrets, drones, planetary defense stations, and small ships shooting at you can be a lot of fire all focused on you.
- SRVs tend to be a stealthier approach. In the example above where I had to destroy a fuel storage and terminal, I tried the ship approach first, but it proved too difficult and seemed like a waste of time for what my objective was. I landed a little ways out from the base, deployed the SRV and was able to drive right up, destroy the tank, and drive away. Also for some reason, despite previously attacking this base, when I drove up to it in the SRV, I wasn't drawing any aggro from the turrets or other defenses, and they were all in fact green to me for some reason. I'm not sure if this was a bug or what. Still, when I had approached other bases in the SRV, I was able to draw less aggro than flying in big and loud with my ship.
- This is probably already commonly known, but your ship is invulnerable while you are in your SRV. I have landed my ship right next to a base and deployed the SRV, and while the turrets shooting at it were definitely taking shields lower, they couldn't damage it.
- Sometimes tresspassing will make a base attack you, sometimes it won't. I think this depends on if the base is within the same major faction as you or not. For instance, I have rolled up on Empire basees, and still got a tresspassing fine, but they didn't shoot at me either.
- SRV shields are fairly weak, but recharge fast. Also if you have the materials, you can repair to 100% instantly with Synthesis. I think that might get nerfed before it hits the main game, as that seems a tad ridiculous for people to just go Rambo mode, and then go straight from 10 to 100% instantly.

I've spent a ton of time just exploring interesting terrain on planets. I explored a planet with really huge canyons and that was quite interesting, saw an SRV crash site as well as crashed drones there. I just landed on a planet that was red, with canyons of ice that ran extremely deep. I didn't explore much, but I will do more of it tomorrow. There is really varied terrain on these planets, more than I was expecting.

I mentioned this in the other thread, but with Synthesis you can reload your ship's ammo. There are different types for Plama Accelerators, Railguns, and other types of weapons. However, with the upgraded versions of the ammo, you get +25% damage and +50% damage. I like that Railguns kind of got a sideways buff in a way, since you can always synthesize more ammo and aren't so limited now. I do think it might get ridiculous though if players are running around with Plasma Accelerators and Railguns dealing 150% damage though, but we'll see how that plays out for balance.

I think it's for the Beta only, I remember reading somewhere yesterday, Probably in the patch note I think?

I thought so too but I got all the way down to ground level and nothing appeared on the single one I found so far.

Awesome impressions/info, Hylian, thanks.

I need this expansion.

Well personnaly, if you can have means to replenish ammo on the fly it's gonna be more interesting to wield ammo cannons now since they always seemed barely efficient enough for the few ammo. I can see a Anaconda Fitted with 4 small/medium lasers and 4 Gimballed Cannon now (ouch the damage)

Well I'm in! Bought the pre-order while that Black Friday deal in the Frontier store was on so have got the black paint jobs and a tenner discount. With ten squid off it would be rude not to lol.

Don't think that I'll be able to play it once it's released though because I'm using the iGPU in my 6700K until I can afford to get a meaty GPU in May next year. Might be able to play it on Low quality settings, perhaps..?

Wait, how did you get a tenner discount? You sure that wasn't your 25% for owning the original already?

Interesting, didn't know that. I'm curious what will happen in the real thing if your ship gets destroyed while in your SRV then. I kind of think the solution might actually be for it to automatically take off when shields drop.

Yeah, in the patch notes, it sounds like the current solution will be used...for now. Could very well change in final release.

There is 1.5 km between the SRV and the Anaconda.

I need to measure how big those valleys were on that planet I posted a screenshot of earlier were.

Also what do you guys have your Terrain settings on where you don't get terrible performance? I just ended up putting mine all on low. While it doesn't look super great, it doesn't look terrible either and I get a good framerate.

Nope, it uses a snapshot of your character from a while back. The beta is separate from the real game.

To play Horizons if you own the Steam version, you need to actually navigate to the Steam/steamapps/common/Elite Dangerous folder and launch EDLaunch.exe from there directly. Launching it through Steam will not show you the Horizons beta. This is all as long as you have beta access of course.

hmmm, I'm wondering if it'll find the install I've already done of Horizon's, from the launcher it wanted me to save...

looks like it wants to, but comes up with "failed to read from response stream" errors, and won't do anything. I do see a phrase "finalizing update" in there.

I haven't heard of any of that. If you want to screenshot what you're seeing and post it here I might be able to help you. The Frontier Elite Dangerous forum might be a good source for help too.

Wait, so in the end, I didn't need to uninstall the Steam version and install the non-steam version to play the Horizons beta?

Nope, you didn't. You can even technically install the non-Steam version with the Steam version still installed, but you don't have to do that, and can just launch the EDLaunch.exe in the game's folder in Steam/steamapps/common

heh, that's ok, left it running while I went to sleep. Checked and it's installed where I think it should be. The regular (32 bit) game is there, and it says "play" while that 1st installed launcher, with the 1st downloaded Horizon's, had "install" listed for the regular game version.

When I get home from work, I'll figure out how to uninstall that unneeded installation (it put it's files in a /EDLaunch folder, rather than the steamlibrary folder.

Did actually play a few minutes of Horizon on the 1st installation, an it started the new character in a base, and I didn't realize till I left the platform, that it put me on a moon. Probably should have flown around the surface, or used the SRV some, But I just took off. Seemed to run at an ok fps.

Does anyone have a problem where they're disconnected when they attempt to use the Frame Shift Drive? I just assumed it was trying to process more data than my internet can handle.

From the dev update today, some cool info.

Exploration gets buffed with Horizons:
We also have some additional changes coming for explorers to integrate some of the new features into their progression a little more. The first addition is an exploration rank increase when finding materials for the first time. Subsequent material finds will provide a small increase to the Commander’s explorer rank value. Searching planets by driving in the SRV will also accrue explorer rank increases and the bonus is scaled depending on how far away from Sol you are.
For the detailed surface scans we shall increase the payouts for these for the Horizons and 1.5 release.

THAT'S AWESOME, as I'm heading for the Far Rim after Horizons releases! You can't get further away from Sol than that!

Seriously going in on my Mac for Elite. Any MAC gamers play this on their system? How's it hold up? I e got a 27" iMac

Horizons is a no go on Mac. There's technologies in play that have no proper implementation in OpenGL, so there's no ETA on it at all.

I would not be surprised if there's no implementation on Mac for this content going forward, to be honest. Or at least nothing I'd describe as "soon".

Bootcamp if you got it and match the specs, otherwise you're hosed. Sorry boss.

So it looks like Horizons may be compatible with Oculus Runtime 0.8 according to this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/3vah7s/rift_08_working_with_elite_horizons_beta/

I'm not sure why it wasn't announced but if so that is great news!

I am about to test this out right now. Previously, I was using a wonky method of getting 0.5 Drivers working in Windows 10 so I'll be excited to see if this works with 0.8. It should improve the experience all around.

Elite Dangerous is still the single best thing to do in VR, period, especially with a full HOTAS and rudder set up. If I'm trying to sell someone on what VR brings to the table in terms of video games, it's what I show. Because Elite in VR is vastly improved over Elite on a regular screen. Elite Dangerous in VR is what has me excited for Star Citizen and Eve Valkyrie.

EDIT: While I'm waiting for the beta to install, it has occurred to me that this is probably the single most I've ever spent on a single game. I paid $175 for the original beta access, and just paid the equivalent of $60 (after the loyalty discount) for this beta access, that's $235 for the core game alone. Then my HOTAS and rudders bought specifically for this game, and the wheel stand pro I modified for it. Without even counting the oculus rift and PC, I've spent over $500 on this game alone.

Crazy. But kind of worth it, tbh. One of the most amazing games I've ever played. I do all this as someone who is still very upset they dropped the offline mode. This is precisely why I'm so stoked for Star Citizen - it should do everything Elite does, but better, with a single player story mode as well.

How do you guys have setup the vehicle driving with HOTAS?

I just tested it for a sec and set the driving axis to my thruster which made it a nightmare to drive (pull down to accelerate, push to go back, and the joystick was also inverted, it was driving me crazy and was so hard to go back to my ship)

Tomorrow I will probably go into the beta for a longer period of time. The framerate in the planet was terrible as well (I'm on a 680), but I'm downloading the latest drivers now to see if it improves. I was stuck with some drivers from March or so.

They released a statement about that (look at posts earlier in the thread). Beta stuff for Elite has always been janky so don't be ashamed if you need to turn down the quality settings a bit for now.

You should have the option to remap those functions and invert those axis for the SRV without affecting your ship's handling.

Frankly, Elite's Joystick default configurations - even for those devises it recognizes by name (e.g. the X52) - is poor. You have to remap things to get the best setup for you.

Rudder twist to steer left and right, joystick left and right for rolling, joystick up and down for pitch, throttle set to forward only with a button (hold) for reverse, working out just fine so far.

I'm looking forward to SC as well, but I'm not sure their flight mechanics will best Elite, based on what we've seen so far.

Let's be clear: Star Citizen does not do nor will it do everything that Elite does, just as Elite does not do everything Star Citizen does. Both have very different philosophies on their approach to game development, as well as game design.

Star Citizen is smaller scale/higher detail. Elite is basically a milky way simulator but will never compete with Star Citizen on level of detail as Star Citizen will never be able to compete on size and the to scale nature of E:D. I'm stoked for both and No Man's Sky as well. I'm actually going to get to use the HOTAS for more than one game.

Seeing is believing. ;) It will do some things better - the small scall detail is through the roof from what we've seen. And Elite has no single player campaign. As well as the first person mode (yet), which is integrated into Star Citizen from the start.

Everything else though... The flight model in Elite for me beats out everything I've played of SC so far. Having a procedural galaxy as well as planet surfaces is hard to beat for me as well. In terms of "PU" things to do, Star Citizen is - except for the very limited things available in the PU alpha 2.0 - still in its infancy or entirely not implemented at all. These things are Elite's greatest shortcoming - the depth or lack thereof of the available systems. Yet, most of these systems aren't even implemented in Star Citizen so far (mining, trading, exploring). They are already in Elite in some form and they're slowly improving. Without them being implemented in SC, I can't say whether it'll do them any better than Elite. They of course claim to make the "BDSSE" (best damn space simulator ever), but that's just talk to me until all those things are actually implemented.

In the end, it comes down to what one prefers and to how good SC will actually be at delivering what it promises when it's released.

Exactly. You're not going to play a rich single-player campaign in ED and you're not going to explore a galaxy in SC. You're not going to have insanely detailed greenhouse bays in your ships in ED and you're not going to have sandbox planets to explore in SC. Etc.
