Tetsuya Takahashi: I would want a 3rd Xenoblade to be more like the first again

What amaze me is what they manage to do with XCX when the budge given was for a mid tier project. Really great usage of the budget and does tell why story elements were simplify. Still great work and hope to hear about their next project later :)

I have love all of their games (yes including Disaster :p).

If they would release Disaster in NA as an e-shop only game...I'd bite immediately. I'm so curious about that game.

So Xenoblade X is NOT story focused?

Is this assessment accurate. I have not paid attention to the new game at all because I didn't care for the first, but if it's just exploring and combat, I'd be totally in for that.

They've done a lot to make the combat feel quicker, added more depth with position of your attacks and giving you ranged and melee weapons to switch between in battle. Exploration and finding objectives are better too and gives you indication of where your targets are, and they gave you a nav ball that you can follow to help find your way to specified areas if you get lost.

Story focus in Xenoblade X is different, it's a lot less linear like a traditional story. Instead of expanding upwards like most RPGs, it instead expands outwards by placing more on affinity quests to reflect colonizing the planet and the people that are left. Also no timed quests now because they want you to experience them all.

I don't know about X, but Xenoblade storywise was definitely his less ambitious title (despite being probably his best game overall), I would love to see him go back to Gears/Saga "complexity" in storytelling now that they have nailed the gameplay part and are backed by a giant like Nintendo.

I'm all for a stronger story but I don't want the open world of Xenoblade Chronicles X to go away.

It's just so great as an exploration game.

All I want is stronger, longer story while retaining everything else about Xenoblade Chronicles X.

I personally just like the open world so much more than the first.

Well that's a start. What I would like is for something more story-driven than Xenoblade, even. It was a far cry from Xenogears.

I'd love that.

Both Xenoblade and Xenoblade X are great in their own ways and combining those things would likely make an incredible game.

As long as they keep the big robots.

Agreed, looking forward to playing X, keep doing what you're doing Takahashi. I've been on board since Xenogears.

I like that he wants get some more of the story driven focus back in for next time.

i just described XCX to a friend as "the guys who made xenogears doing Skyrim, with robots"

so yeah, keep on trucking

End of the day, I'm just glad Takahashi is still making video games. That man's 1998 effort changed my young life. But I feel like he said this after Xenoblade, too. For some time he claimed the next Xeno title would be more story-driven; that fell entirely by the wayside and I'd like to know why. So I'll really need to see a ton of narrative previews from a hypothetical next entry before getting excited; even Xenoblade Chronicles failed to scratch the itch I'd hoped it'd scratch.

Awesome! Great news. I haven't played X yet, and I'm sure it's great, but there's many aspects of the original that I loved that don't seem to be in the new game.

No, i want Baten Kaitos 3 next.

Isn't Baten Kaitos also Namco's property? It would make that game as difficult to make as a new Xenosaga.

Then again, they know that Monolith Soft has made a name from themselves around the world, and considering the Xenoblade Chronicles came out in Japan in 2010 and X came out in 2015, it's probably 2020 when the next Xenoblade, or whatever Takahashis next project will be. It'll take a while, so I'd gladly take at least Xenosaga HD Trilogy while waiting for the new game, so scratch that itch for Monolith RPG. Even more so, when considering only Episode II of Xenosaga was ever released in Europe.

Then again, Nintendo and Namco have quite good relations, so who knows. I ask it in E3 Miiverse community every year, so hopefully they have at least seen it. As for Xenogears, there's some rumouring that Square-Enix and Nintendo have better relations now that in ages, but I still doubt there will ever be Xenogears remake. I'd take a PS1-port release for Europe, but doesn't seem like it's happening anytime soon.

Okay... I played 45 hours of the first game and didn't think it was story-driven enough for me to finish it. I always felt like I was playing it wrong though since it just never hooked me. I just felt like it was another single player MMO along the lines of FFXII and thought it forced you from place to place without a big story payoff at each destination.

If XenobladeX is even less story-driven, I might have to return it.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.

Did he? I hope you're not talking about that Nintendo Power quote that was completely and (I believe) purposely misconstrued by certain fans.

Interesting that they are seriously listening to feedback from the Japanese release, it appears they are aware X was not as well recieved as Xenoblade Chronicles.
Im glad he says this as the first game proved you can have a "Typical" videogame story with an open world structure and work very well.
Im not sure about this thing they have been saying about having more WRPG elements on X, they dont need that so im glad the director wants try something a bit different next time.

I find it interesting that he points out that this isn't a AAA title. I'd love to see what they could do with a AAA budget then. Still waiting to get my hands on my Special Edition (cmon UPS!) and he already has me salivating at whatever else they do next.

If that's the case then I hope I'm not, either. My memory is not the best on this matter, however; I'm admittedly running on hearsay. I thought there was more than just that instance though.

This isn't the first time he's said this, has he? Or maybe I'm thinking of someone else from Monolith.

That's probably why X never gripped me pre-release. I haven't played it yet so I'm hoping it'll prove me wrong, but something more along the lines of the original sounds more up my alley.

I really didn't like Xenoblade 1. But if there will be a 3, I hope a lot of lessons were learned from X, such as having some other travel form than running and less character railroading.

His vision since Xenoblade has been to recreate the world, and that continued with Xenoblade X. With Xenoblade he actually said he was moving away from a story focused game. For X, the only thing I remember him saying was that he wanted to make a more sci-fi story, but he never said he'd be going back to a heavy story focus.

If they want to put more resources into a well-developed story then I suggest they focus less on the scope of the world next time.

From what I've heard about XCX, the world is impressive but overkill in its size.

I see. Thanks for informing me.

Yeah, Sawano's stuff is mostly garbage. His music appeals to young teenagers with underdeveloped taste. It's really "epic", after all.

I didn't buy a WiiU when I found that Chronicles X wasn't story driven (In the way xenogears/saga/blade where).

Let's see if the next one makes me buy my first nintendo console.

Well, considering Xenoblade Chronicles didn't sell you on a Wii, I doubt anything Monolith puts out will get you to purchase a Nintendo system.

i'm confused, didn't Takahashi say he didn't like Xenoblade 1's story, and would improve it in X, or am I just making that up?

Either way, I would welcome another story driven Xenoblade. I haven't even played X yet though lol, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it regardless of it's lack of story.

e: seems my question was somewhat answered already

I'm not a fan of Sawano, but some of the posts in this thread echoing my opinion are done so in such fashion that I'm almost ashamed to dislike him. I think it would be good if we avoided blanket typecasting those among us who enjoy his soundtrack; there are quite a few of them, and given GAF's demographics I refuse to believe they're all "young teenagers." :p

Yes please! =)

I've not yet played XCX and hope I'll enjoy it nevertheless, but I'm all for story-driven experiences in my JRPGs.

I like Sawano's music but if there's one thing I'll criticize him for is that most of his songs have a very similar structure with the Sawano drop about 1-2 minutes in, then slowing down again only to get the final bigger Sawano drop in near the end. It's not like this is bad either, often times it works very well but you really start to notice this when you start listening to a lot of his music.

I hope they do some more stuff in the spirit of Xenosaga. I would love that!
And hopefully the get Yuki Kajiura to make the music again.

Sorry, one correction. It was more sci-fi, not mature. I think mature got stuck in my head from what some people wanted.

Knowing this, it's entirely possible I read "sci-fi" and got entirely carried away thinking it would be grander and more detailed.

I'm kind of a sci-fi freak. :p

oh shit i can hear it now lol

Just make a good battle system for the next and I don't care how the game progresses =X

(maybe get rid of the fetch quests too, but I'm willing to complete them if fighting is fun)

Also, I guess this is a confirmation that Nintendo does indeed plan on continuing the series. Nothing but good news.

As long as they keep the focus on exploration I'll be happy with anything!
Though it'd be really nice if the battle system could be kept as well, please.

Definitely sounds like HD growing pains factored into some of the decisions made regarding XCX and I'm glad they ultimately chose gameplay over story to focus on. Now that the team's got all this experience under their belt, I'm sure their next game will be even better for it.

Yeah I think expectations can get away from us. I was hoping we would go out into space at some point and I never thought there would be one city in the entire game (even if it's one of the biggest I've ever seen).

What's the difference (without spoilers if possible)? I didn't play the first or the new one but I'm interested in both.
