Paragon, MOBA from Epic Games (PC/PS4, 2016) [Up: First Gameplay, Crossplatform, F2P]

I'm worried about the card system.

Looks like the card system is basically how you manage character builds (a la Runes & Masteries in League).

Everyone saying this looks amazing/different...

Maybe I need new glasses. To me it looks like they took the very cliche "Gears of War" style of characters (completely with huge oversized bodies) and the very drab and "gritty gray and browns" color scheme.

I'd love to have seen something a bit more different, you can use colors without making it "cartoony" and to me having huge over-sized characters IS cartoony.

They probably mean gameplay since you know, it's a video game and you'll spend 99% of the time playing it.

Hmm, not sure how you're getting that impression. There are a couple hulking characters, yes, but the majority of the characters shown in the trailer were normal size. I think the colour palette is very full and vibrant. The lighting is fantastic and really brings out the colours, from the blue light flowing through the towers, and the verdant map passageways, and the several colours of particles that were in the trailer.

Game looks amazing, plus this is just one map. I'm all in though, so maybe I'm a bit biased.

5 years ago I would agree with you. But in the context of now and the other games in the MOBA genre this is very unique. Most MOBA games are very colorful and mostly have WoW-like character types. This seems totally different from that. And just because a game has a muted colour pallet doesn't mean it looks bad.

I see some bright blues, greens, and purples.. whites, and greys... The color scheme doesn't seem dull or drab at all.

Just because it's not super saturated bright colors doesn't mean everything is brown. There's a wide color spectrum between that most games fall within.

Three standout features:
+ Surely the most beautiful MOBA title so far, finally an in-house UE4 AAA project by Epic Games
+ It has shooter/TPS direct-hero controls (true & tested from Gears)
+ It's cross-play between PC & PS4

Where did you hear this? That's great for the longevity of the game if true.

Epic Games mentioned it on the PS.Blog:
Console development is in Epic’s DNA, so we set out to create a great experience for PlayStation gamers. This is not a port. The gameplay feels great on DualShock 4.
Cross-play between PS4 and PC is seamless and the game saves your progress and items across both platforms.

They have not yet clarified, but basically I think it's replacing Matinee as the cinematic creation tool for developers.

Matinee was pretty well received though overall, so presumably this is quite good if they're dumping that.

We talking source filmmaker here or something else?

Epic has been pushing the use of UE4 for general purpose animation beyond gaming, things like short films, advertisement (where I don't think they don't charge royalties atm) and Visualization.

It's a MOBA game so i'm not surprised at the cross platform play. They're going to milk the hell out of DLCs in this game.

Looks, cool. PC players are going to murder console gamers though.

Might get called out for this but, Microsoft take fucking note. See, we have crossplay here guys. Why must you make it so difficult? /rant.

But yeah, I like the look of it. So how well it holds up going forward.

I'm pretty sure that Epic wants this game to grab an audience in China, so the PC + PS4 crossplay was an obvious decision. I wonder though if this will mean that the Xbone is going to miss out because of this.

On a different note, a big part of the enjoyment of this kind of game is to see your toon doing cool things, so I think that it was a good idea to go with a third-person perspective. Overall, I feel that this is one of the more promising upcoming MOBAs.

Hahaha, wow, one of the worst endings to a conference I have witnessed and then there is actually good gameplay footage they did not bother to show. Like others are saying: why?

That said, as a Playstation person I never really played Gears (only 1 on PC for a bit) and I was extremely dissapointed this was not a badass narrative-focused third person shooter or something alike. I got hyped for a new "Gears type of game" there.

This just is not for me, even though that doesn't say anything about the quality.

I want to be cynical about new MOBAs, but this looks like it has the best chance of being the spiritual successor to Super Monday Night Combat that I so desperately want.

Smite style gameplay?

Looks more action-y than Smite. Better comparison might be Gigantic.

You probably do need new glasses. Out of the 5 announced characters and the few others we have seen in trailers, only 2 look like they could potentially fit your description.

I'm curious. Why do you want to be cynical towards new MOBAs?

They're becoming a trendy/crowded genre and it's difficult to get peoples' attention when the biggest ones are so dominant. I have nothing against the idea of making more.

Made by Epic means Tencent will pave the inroads to China's market.

RIP battleborn.

This and Overwatch might be the LoL and Dota of Heroes shooters.

Kind of looks like Gears of MOBA with a bit more colour & some Borderlands style character specific special attacks.

Crossplay with PC and PS4? Wow, this game has legs. I understand why Sony thought they should close with this, it would of been better if they presented information before the trailer---and showed the gameplay but whatev.

If I can pay for early access as a PS4 player I will, Epic's inhouse creation will be made with love.

And this is why I'm interested in it. Gears was one of my most played MPs last gen, so I'm really looking forward to this. I don't know why they didn't show the vid in the OP over the CG trailer!

It's going to have paid early access, so probably a full-priced game.

Not that I disagree with you, but there *are* examples of f2p games starting with paid betas. It's a way to keep overall numbers down while still getting feedback from players and funding development before cosmetics and other f2p hooks are put into the game.

This game looks like a lot of fun. I am really not interested in the MOBO genre due to my brief game sessions with them. The thing I think this MOBO has going for it besides providing a new perspective is that it has a visual space and breaks that make it easier to see what is going on. The other MOBO games seem too cluttered to really make much sense out of what is going on which makes them draining and confusing to play.
I will give this game a chance.

Big EPIC Games fan. Though I definitely miss Cliff Bleszinski and Rod Ferguson being there. Either way, definitely looking forward to this, but hoping it will be on steam and not just on their own store.

As for cross-play, PC gamers are going to have an advantage in this type of game so not sure I like that option. Ill be getting it on PC regardless, but its certainly going to cripple the PS buyers.

Looks really good....wonder if cross play is the reason for no xb1 version? Another Ff14 situation maybe...

Wouldn't be surprised.

Dungeon Defenders 2 has a paid early access but will be free to play at launch.

I see. Well, I guess we'll see.

This looks a lot more like a MOBA than I thought, so that kind of disappoints me. However, it certainly looks good, so I will give this a fair shot whenever I am able to.
