Captain America: The Winter Soldier was way better than the original, and I enjoyed the original for what it was.

This was my answer.

To whoever posted Rocky IV - you should be ashamed of yourself.

Don't even know where to begin with this thread. My god. A Rocky sequel being better than the original? I cannot.

Although I love all three LotR films, Two Towers is by far the weakest of the trilogy. The entire middle of the movie drags with the "Aragorn is dead oops no he isn't now watch Liv Tyler cry" section being a particular standout. The Helm's Deep battle makes up for it, but the other two films flow much better.

This is my favorite among the trilogy and I feel is the strongest. It just had perfect stuff in it. It has establishing moments of Sauron's control, Saruman's power, the whole struggle, everything. While RotK felt like it had two longwinded fights and FotR was more about establishing stuff, this one manages to get both and do with them flawlessly.

I could not disagree more. I find it the most boring and drawn out of the 3 movies by far. Fellowship to me is easily the best of the trilogy. It has the best pacing and manages to feel epic without having to rely on a massive battle to do so.

Is it really common a thing? Anyway, share what sequel films you think that are superior to the first (or earlier) film.

Recently in my head are these three.

I simply cannot agree with this. Worst of the three. I mean it's a fine movie, but I can't say with any conviction that it's better than FotR.

Anyways...

Empire Strikes Back.
Dark Knight
T2
Cap 2: Winter Soldier
MI: Ghost Protocol
Aliens

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
On board with many of the responses, but cannot agree with this one. Nope.
Uh... that one was awful, while the first was excellent. That's a weird choice. I agree with Toy Story 2, though.

I agree the first one is better, but I feel it got stuff you usually not found in sequels, like actually having a working romance without all the forced angst.

Not selling Fellowship short, since that's a great movie too, but I feel like the characters are far more fleshed out here, and Frodo and Sam in particular got much of their development here. And like I said, this has less tell more show feel since you do see stuff like how much widespread Sauron's control is, how big Saruman's forces are, etc.

But mind you I got my experience from EE.

Also Aliens, Empire Strikes Back, Gremlins 2

Don't agree with LOTR. Fellowship is the best and the only one I can really stand to rewatch.

What?

Anyway fully agree on Two Towers OP, its my favorite of the trilogy as well.

So many great moments Sauraman's speech, Helms Deep charge, Gandalf's return, Sam's speech at the end gets me every time.

Two Towers is your favourite LoTR movie, so why do I even respond? Forgets Hobbits, has a way to long battle and doesn't do the spirit of the books justice. It foreshadows the godawful Hobbit movies.

Well argued.

Movie is at 91% at Rotten, so the general consensus does seem to say no to your judgement. And well, I liked the deeper characters, the surprisingly mature love relationships and the flight scenes which did not look like cheap 3D gimmicks anymore, but actually profitted from 3D.

Evil Dead 2
Godfather Part II
Empire Strikes Back
Breakin 2 Electric Boogaloo
Gremlins 2: The New Batch
Spider-Man 2
Aliens (controversial, but I prefer ten second by a tiny margin)
The Dark Knight
Oldboy (pretty sure it's the second in a trilogy)
Captain America Winter Soldier

Edit: oh yeah, Drunken Master 2 as well

I agree with Ghost Rider: SoV and submit Crank 2: High Voltage (1 is good but it is more a warmup for the second)

The Road Warrior
T2
Aliens
X2
TDK
Dawn of Apes
Good the Bad and the Ugly
Cap 2

everything else is wrong. like Rush Hour 2? forreal? I loved it but man watch the first again, it's like 10 times better.

and Two Towers over Fellowship? hell nah.

used to love aliens and t2 over their first films. now i more appreciate the tighter focus of the originals and the tense atmosphere both had.

i came around on bttf2 and bttf the same way. back to the future is just a way better movie and hits every beat pretty much perfectly. the sequels are a lot of fun, and it's a solid trilogy, but they're not as endlessly rewatchable as the first.

Godfather 2 is better than the first (the greatest vs. the runner-up of all time).

And lol at Aliens, first one is superior.

I know I am in the minority, but I absolutely love Predator 2. It's just so over the top.

And the supporting cast. Kent McCord, Calvin Lockhart, Morton Downey Jr.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier was way better than the original, and I enjoyed the original for what it was.

I like the first one more, liked TWS but on repeated viewings it does not hold up as well (especially the third act). Just too much dumb shit going on, the first one was an origin story (I like them) and I was not very familiar with Cap. So maybe that had something to do with it.

I can't trust anyone who says Empire is better than New Hope

So... You don't trust anyone then?

The Wrath of Khan. I'm not really much of a Star Trek fan,but I really enjoy this movie over The Motion Picture.

Fuck, I can't think of any other pair of films that are both so imbalanced in terms of underration and overration. Most Trek fans agree with you, I think, but The Motion Picture is a fucking masterpiece.

Also, Batman Returns is not only better, but it's also the best christmas movie.

I always wonder how lots of Alien fans prefer second movie to the first one!

Because the first one is a horror movie about rape and the second one is an action movie with the victim now taking revenge on her rapist.

Of course ultimately she fails, but while Ripley was pretty much helpless in the first movie, only trying to escape and staying alive. In Aliens she fights and people can identify more with that aspect.

Obvious and already stated but:

Godfather Part 2
Empire Strikes Back
Spiderman 2
Dark Knight
Wrath of Khan

Also OP technically Two Towers isn't a sequel. There's only one film/novel called Lord of the Rings that was chopped into three to make it more consumable to joe public size wise so all you're really saying is you liked the middle of the film more. Pedantic I know but it always annoys me when people don't factor this element of LOTR in when they talk about sequels, planning out story etc.

Love the Temple of Doom mention too. Completely wrong but nice to see preaching for the underdog!

I almost said House 2, but I dunno, man. I'm a little torn on those two masterpieces of cinema.
It's a bit like Gremlins and Gremlins 2. Two amazing films that are great for very different reasons.

House 2 is pretty awesome, but Richard Moll as the villain in the first is amazing.

Damn, now I want to watch them again.
