The Silent Hill 2, 3 & 4 PC thread - A guide to a better HD Collection

I'd just like to say that the 'fix' for silent hill 2 resolution that I got from this thread made the menu transitions unbearably slow. pausing to look at the map or items was 5, 6 seconds? I found another one that works much better for anybody else who has this issue.

I need to try this one next time I play SH2. This was posted on the previous page too.

Woah, since when has the Silent Hill 4 15 fps issue been fixed? Seeing this thread again made me check if there had been any progress with that and PC Gaming Wiki lists a fix. I don't actually own 4 on PC because of the issue, does it really work??

edit: OP could really use some updates btw. Not only these fixes but there are also lots of dead links, I hope nothing got lost

Looks like there's been a few changes here and there the last couple of years. I'm really busy with work these days, so if anyone can list the new things I'll update the OP accordingly.

The PC version will still be missing post-processing effects and have a buggy depth of field as well. I would probably recommend the PCSX version in this particular case with 30FPS + post-processing effects + proper DoF.

My links still work. Are you referring to Angular Graphics' links?

Sorry, I might have exaggerated there, I didn't check them all. But the Silent Hill 2 FMV files all seem to be down

You're right about 4 but it's still a pretty great improvement. I mean 15 fps is just abysmal

All right, so I looked into Silent Hill 2 and 3 through Windows 10. You can actually remove the borders of the window by changing resolution in the Options menu as long as you haven't used the Squizzy respatcher in SH2's case. However, this means that you always have to revert back to the 4:3 resolutions, unfortunately.

And yes, I have tried all the compatibility options in Windows 10 with the exe file

If anyone comes across any solution for Windows 10 let me know.

I found a fix. Just use Sh2proxy and add the parameters -w=1920 -h=1080 -windowed -borderless (or whatever resolution you want to do it in) to your shortcut to the exe.

And I checked PCSX2 again and SH2 is serviceable, but you have to accept the bugs that come along with using an emulator. The health indicator in the status screen is bugged, the sound and framerate sometimes get choppyy (and I'm on a i7 4790k + 980 gpu), and FMVs has to be reverted to gdsx rendering under Game Fixes in order for FMVs to actually show up.

Silent Hill 3 on PCSX2 is even worse with missing effects (tried DX9 and DX11 rendering). Missing shadows, buggy DoF, and stuff like that. It also seems to use textures at lower resolution than the PC version.

I still think the PS2 versions are the definitive ones in terms of effects, but unfortunately 100% emulation isn't possible at the moment, so the PC versions of SH2 and 3 are the way to go still.

I had an acceptable time playing SH4 through emulation, though.

The FMV links are all from angular graphics. I can see if I can reupload the ones I have on my harddrive to a Google or Skydrive account or something.

If someone could extract the SH2 PS2 fog and add it to the PC version we could have the ultimate Silent Hill experience u___u

Updated the OP with fixes for Windows 10 users for both Silent Hill 3 and 2.

I also uploaded angular graphics widescreen FMVs to a Google Drive account. It's 2,6GB, just FYI.

Still there's no a fix out there that can run silent hill 2 at 60 fps ? A mod, or something ? For modern games this is possible, like tale of zestiria, but for this game not...

I'm working on some extra additions for the SH2 and 3 PC versions that I'll be posting later.

But I want to know how/if you enable the SH2 Easter Eggs (toilet cutscene, letters in the apartment, etc.) for the Silent Hill 3 PC version? Regedits? SH2 save game somewhere?

All right, the first update today is the news that the amazingly talented Nemesis2000/afterdyons from ps2wide.net fame have made a wrapper for Silent Hill 4 that entirely fixes the port. No more 15FPS cutscenes, no more blur, no more art money bullshit, not even letterboxing in cutscenes. Just a simple ini file that you edit yourself.

I've got some more stuff coming up in the coming days - merry christmas everyone!

Just dump it into your Silent Hill 4 folder and edit the ini to your liking.

I knew I had delayed my replay of Silent Hill 4 for a reason. Fantastic news!

Works well, even in 4k!

But keyboard controls is suck and xbox one gamepad glitched in win 10 with this game (and i heard there is no analog movements in pc version..)

Hmm, I checked it out and tried correcting things, but I couldn't get it to work either. I'm afraid you are SOL if you want to have languages other than English or Japanese. Sorry, but look at it as a learning experience of the English language :)

Hmm, both my DS4 and my 360 controller are picked up perfectly fine in this game. Aren't there drivers for the X1 gamepad?

EDIT: Btw, some new shots of SH4 with borderless cutscenes:

Thanks anyway! I understand english enough to understand the game, but it would be nice to have it with my native language....anyway i suppose it's not possible to modify the exe usa to show other languages, right ? And anti aliasing forced it works ? On silent hill 2 aa hardware works, on 3 no, and on 4 i suppose no too ?

Silent Hill 4 is still very pretty and stylistically fascinating.

It had Team Silent's elusive element of somber beauty that hasn't been replicated.

Its ok, not very uncommon issue for xbox one gamepad (even in some new games), only in windows 10. I just use my old xbox360 pad or ds3.

Altohugh this is minor in comparison, the second update is that nemesis2000 has also made an edited .exe for Silent Hill 2 that removes the letterbox from cutscenes. It works perfectly fine with SH2Proxy, so just replace the .exe with this new one if you wish to have cutscenes without letterboxes.

Here are some examples:

there's a hope for a 60 fps mod for silent hill 2 ?

Okay, final thing that I want to introduce is that I have made Cheat Engine tables for Silent Hill 2, 3, and 4 that manipulates camera positions. Unfortunately it is only relative to your character, so it is not entirely possible to have fly camera, but you can use the Look mode to focus the camera where you want

Silent Hill 2
Director's Cut version (most common version)
Restless Dreams version (US PC release) - may need adjustments in values
Code:
Numpad 5: Toggle camera lock
Numpad 3/9: Adjusts Z coordinates
Numapd 4/6: Adjusts Y coordinates
Numpad 2/8: Adjusts X coordinates

Examples:

Silent Hill 3
Code:
Numpad 5: Toggle camera lock
Numpad 3/9: Adjusts Z coordinates
Numapd 4/6: Adjusts Y coordinates
Numpad 2/8: Adjusts X coordinates

Examples:

Silent Hill 4 (restricted)
Only moves the character's X and Y coordinates.
Code:
Numpad 5: Toggle camera unlock
Numapd 4/6: Adjusts Y coordinates of Henry
Numpad 2/8: Adjusts X coordinates Henry

don't work at all...i can't enable the options when the game si running and selected in cheat engine.I tried only with silent hill 2, the files on mediafire ara named sh3 :/

It's interesting to look back through this thread. The screens look awesome and I'm impressed with how well many of the assets still hold up.

At the same time, I do think these games are still best played on a standard def CRT in a dark room. Perfect image quality on an LCD panel (with poor black levels, of course) really doesn't mesh with the original feeling these games established.

I've tried replaying them like this and had a good time but when I had a chance to play again on a regular CRT it brought back those feelings that I never thought I'd experience again.

I need to try playing these on an OLED TV and see if the absolute black can bring some of that back even with the higher detail. Even the Kuro plasma isn't quite dark enough for these games. If you use dim bias lighting, the screen does appear completely black, but if you want to play 100% in the dark, you can still see some very slight glowing of the panel unlike a CRT. I actually haven't seen an OLED TV in complete darkness yet, though. I wonder if they can do absolute black with zero light?
