Turok 1 & 2 re-releasing on PC; Dinosaurs coming to Steam, GOG, etc.

I don't know the guy and have nothing against him personally, I'm just bewildered by what went down with Powerslave.

Perhaps a mistake? A screw up? a misunderstanding?

Not a big deal, it will come out eventually again.

BTW, is kaiser involved with this production I assume? I have yet to check his blog.

Why? It's basically wasd plus analog. It was perfect.

I could never get used to it. The analogue kept overshooting shots, the c-button placement made making finer diagonal movement hard, I had to stop every to often to get better aim. Turok 2 was among the harder games on the N64 to finish in my opinion, but with a mouse it was actually pretty easy.

I still get some level of enjoyment from replaying the N64 versions, and I'm sure this will fix all the obvious issues that aren't game design related. Bought.

I thought he was, but I'm not seeing much, if any, of his Turok remake enhancements in these screenshots. Just bloom, no sunshafts and whatnot.

I've always wanted to play Turok but instead I got that generic trash experience on the PS3. The gods, must be shining upon me because I've been hoping to play these games without the hassle...

Both games "will be re-mastered for today's modern computers with enhanced graphics and other improvements," the developer said in a statement.
"Night Dive Studios believes that classic video games should never be abandoned or forgotten," the company says. "They should be available to play at any time, run out of the box without the hassle of installing outdated drivers, or using obsolete hardware. Movies are restored, books are digitized, and art is preserved to be appreciated for all time. Why should games be any different?"

The truth. This is the kind of game developer that understands the medium.

Most fucked up and best weapon ever. And that Level1 music will never leave my head, remember buying it back in the day (I was like 12). The huge box + badass Dinosaur logo on the cover sold me, then I read about the weapons on the back. Those were the times, the huge PC boxes were the shit.

Night Dive are a blessing. (Please unfuck Blood's legal bullshittery ;-;)

Can't wait to pick these up, although I'm secretly hoping for some form of quicksave in 2. Those enormous levels got a bit mind numbing after a while!

I got the original Turok bundled in with my graphics card a long, long time ago.

The controls felt weird since the view auto-centered constantly. Moving the analog stick felt like pulling Turok's head in a small tug of war against the centering, and that did not translate wll to the mouse. I ended up using kb + flight stick and it felt surprisingly good, lol. That's how I first beat the game.

Turns out this is Turok EX, the port done by Kaiser. So it's safe to assume this'll have native controller support and other niceties that the originals did not. I also believe these are based off the N64 versions, not the PC ones.

One of the best sountracks of the N64 era. This probably my favorite. 40 seconds of buildup and boom... you feel like a badass.

Man, Iguana sure knew their atmosphere back then. No wonder these guys went on to make Metroid Prime 5 years later.

Man I really hope they either use the N64 music or let us choose. I'm hearing all the comparisons between the N64 and PC music and just can't get used to the PC music.

Why? It's basically wasd plus analog. It was perfect.

It was really more like WASD + Analog in reverse, since in the right-handed configuration the "WASD" was for aiming and the analog for movement. I was fine with it back then since I hadn't played a dual analog game or a M/KB shooter at that time. GoldenEye felt better because it was designed around single analog.

Turok 2 legit has one of the best weapon selections in a shooter. Anybody else remember that Xena boomerang thing?

One weapon doesn't make up for a shit game

Also, the cerebral bore is generally useless in the context of how the game plays in spite of its cool presentation values. By the time you have it and want to use it, enemies shoot you and damage you as soon as they emerge from fog as it is tracking and scanning for them.

You invariably take damage from the enemy you are killing when using the c. bore.

The worst part about playing Turok 2 on a N64 controller was cycling through all eight hundred terrible weapons. Anything that required extra buttons outside of walking/shooting was a pain, really.

The originals have controller support.

There's a pretty credible source, the creator of Turok Ex himself :p.
What's the main difference between the old PC ports and the N64 originals?

That's an old interview that was conducted before the drama with Powerslave, so I'm not sure it's relevant to this port.

In terms of content, the big differences are the music (the PC music is more lush and orchestrated and many of the tunes are different but it loses the dynamic nature of the N64 MUSIC). and in T2's case, the multiplayer, which is completely different between versions.

The PC version of Turok 2 is a considerable improvement by virtue of letting you save anywhere

and not running at 3 fps.

(Speaking of Acclaim, would be cool if that same group also got hold on the PC release of Extreme G II. Another neat game held down by performance on the n64...)

I recall this being the case, I might have to bring that up next time I interview them

He updated his Powerslave EX blog.

I, uh. I generally like the Turok music but maybe not that particular track :(

Edit: It grows on you though.

Edit2: I wonder if it's possible to port Shadow of Oblivion to PC somehow.

These games are apparently on a new engine and were created much like the Doom 64 port was created it sounds like, so it's definitely possible for 3 and Rage Wars to be ported I'm thinking. I assume if these sell well Night Dive will put resources into that.

These devs are awesome. I asked about Myth and this is what they told me on facebook.

Thanks for the suggestion! Myth are definitely on our list. Who knows what the future holds?

I loved Myth 1 and 2 so I hope this happens.

Well, this guy also make Doom64EX so everything is possible!
I sure hope so, I watched some Shadow of Oblivion gameplay and it looks really fun. Awkward to control on the N64 controller though, but with proper mouse/keyboard control it'd probably be a fun shooter. Quite a looker for a N64 game too. I think it and Perfect Dark are two of the most impressive titles on the system. Which is funny because the controller sucks for FPS games.

Edit: Wait, does this mean they actually ported the N64 versions to PC rather than modifying the code of the current PC versions? Man that's crazy, but hey, we did just get a Dreamcast port of Grandia 2 a few days ago.

Yeah he does the 64 version. Just like how powerslave was done from the superior PS version.

Which is awesome!

https://doom64ex.wordpress.com/ more about it.

What is Doom 64 EX?

Doom 64 EX is a faithful recreation of the original game using the Doom source code as the base with the benefit from newer control methods like mouse look, high resolutions and color depth. In addition to that, Doom 64 EX will also feature mod support to allow users to create custom levels, textures and sprites. Doom 64 EX is also aimed to be 100% accurate to the original game as close as possible and offer some PC-specific features that can enhance the game.

What is Kex Engine?

Kex is the codename for the engine that’s being used by Doom 64 EX. This is a heavily modified Doom engine which will eventually be used as a base to create original games and remakes of other classic console games that were never ported to the PC

I AM... TUROK !

It seems that the PC versions are running in true 16/9 and with a better FOV. Exactly what Turok 2 needs (and a stable framerate too) : a better FOV !

The FOV and camera position stuff in Turok 2 is so weird. PC version had FOV and camera control but it did not work the way you think it would at times. The gun position changes rather radically when you change it (for worse to be honest).

It's been a long time since I played it but I'm pretty sure it gave you the option of a weapon wheel. First game I remember having one.

It's a pity that Turok 1 remake is OGL. If it was directx I would have been able to play it in 3d.
