President Barack Obama preparing to issue Executive Order on gun control

Washington

(CNN) As his administration prepares an executive order tightening access to guns, President Barack Obama met Wednesday with former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a proponent of new gun laws who has become the chief enemy of the National Rifle Association.

Obama has met with a series of gun control advocates in recent weeks as his aides complete work on a potential order expected to expand background checks on gun sales by closing the so-called "gun show loophole."

A timeline on the order -- which has been tangled in legal and administrative questions -- is still unknown. The President met with former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords, who was gravely wounded during a 2011 shooting in Tucson, Arizona, on December 4 to discuss gun control.

But even as he works to tighten access to firearms, a new survey shows dwindling support for an outright ban on assault weapons, which both Obama and Bloomberg have advocated as a means to prevent gun deaths.
What could Obama do?
In his executive action, Obama could alter the government's definition of who is "in the business" of selling guns, expanding it to include private dealers and others who can currently sell without completing a background check. Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has already said she would take such action if elected to the White House.

But the legal hurdles in moving unilaterally have proven difficult for the administration to surmount. If he does move forward with executive actions, they would almost certainly be challenged in court by Republicans and groups like the NRA.

And like previous executive actions, Obama's move on guns could be overturned by his successor.

Valerie Jarrett, Obama's senior adviser who also attended the meeting with Bloomberg Wednesday, said this week that the executive orders would be revealed in "short order," but refused to offer any more detailed timelines.

That's pretty surprising given all the attacks lately. I suppose you can't change the mentality of people when the culture has been ingrained since the constitution was written

I cannot imagine this is going to go over well. I don't really know what else he can do?

With all the corrupt police stories popping up I feel like I need a gun to protect myself.

You're dead either way. No way you can get in a shootout with the police and live.

The prophecies are true! Obama coming to take our guns.

You'll see, third term incoming.

While I am absolutely in favor of tighter gun control, I am not in favor of executive action on this front. Regardless of how mundane this executive order is, it plays rigtpht into the hands of the NRA and basically confirms (at least in the minds of the gun rights activists) that Obama is trying to unilaterally take away their guns (even if in reality, this is simply improving background checks).

It's not surprising imo.

Terrorist are getting guns and killing us thus more guns is the answer.

Not to mention a huge subset of gun owners that believe their guns will make them heroes when they shoot the bad guy or the government comes to take their guns, etc.

Any step in the right direction would be a great start, but I can already imagine the "Obama's taking our guns" crap we're gonna hear at my wife's family over Christmas. We uh... don't get along with the rest of her family very well.

Man, I can't wait to see the salt from all of my conservative family members on Facebook about this.

It won't be quite on the same level as the Gay Marriage decision from the court, but it will still be pretty great.

I just worry that this might make more conservatives get out and vote next year.

Presidents should have more powers IMO. Executive Order ahead.

Gun show loophole is stupid.
Selling weapons online is stupid.
Not having photo ID or background checks is stupid.

Heck, buying a car is more complicated than buying a gun

People are against it because they want guns to protect themselves from people with guns. That's why gun sales rise after every big shooting. If your neighbor gets a gun to "protect his family", you'll think you have to "protect your family" too and do the same.

If it's just closing gun loopholes then that's fucking great. Anyone opposed to that is a lunatic.

No one's trying to take your guns. But killing machines need to be heavily restricted. Period. I need more proof than your word that you can be responsible with a gun.

Thank goodness.

And all the "patriots" who babble about revolution will just sit in their easy chairs and do nothing, realizing how powerless and ineffectual they are.

Why would any sane person object to this? He's not taking your toys away.

I would be okay with feds conducting midnight raid the second the order was signed and the next day America woke up to literally every gun shop and private gun hoarder out of commission and Obama's like "fuck you, gun nuts. It's over. I win, bitches."

And then we see him glance with a smile toward the chaos emeralds that will power his empire for decades to come...

Some people have issues with a black secretly muslim man in a position of power trying to tell them they can't buy unlimited guns.

It's not like totally sane people are the ones stocking up on guns and munitions here.

Good. Too bad he can't actually just take everyone's guns.

No that's not too bad at all. There are laws for a reason and no person should have absolute power, because eventually you get the wrong kind of person in charge.

This though, tighter gun laws, is a good thing.

Gun owners are going to think this is the first step in an Obama takeover. It's gonna be funny to read their comments online.

Because certain folks have been whipped up into a fervor over the past 7 or 8 years, being convinced that any action "against" guns is ultimately going to result in guns banned. So push back against anything sane is a push back on a gun ban, to them.

Pretty much what I expected to happen. I'm still surprised by all of the comments from his last Oval Office address claiming that, "he has as much authority as you or me" in making any kind of gun control changes. That's precisely what an executive order is.

Obama literally cannot do anything right in their minds anyway, so might as well just do what he wants to do regardless of what they think.

i've been begging for over 5 years.
Closing the 'gun show loophole' is a very good and common sense plan.

People are going to lose their shit.

Oh thank God.

I wanted to spend my Christmas defending my progressive beliefs against the onslaught of the pro-gun conservative family I'm surrounded by. I did want to cause rifts and fights and possibly end up being ignored by my wife until New Years. I really did, please understand that.
