I liked the 3D, it built the environment pretty well. Never felt too out of place or distracting. Plus I have a sick pair of Kylo Ren 3D-glasses from my showing at the Cinemark.

The art of book confirms at one point there were plans to bring back Hayden Christensen as ghost Anakin to appear to Kylo Ren. And that his ghost would morph from Anakin to Vader back and forth.

That could have been cool if done right but it may have been a bit too much. I like how they handled Ren's internal struggle in the movie.

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Wasn't there a huge post in the last spoiler thread about how the First Order was detailed in a companion book as being culturally different from the Empire? They don't see their people as disposable troops, and have build various failsafes and redundancies into their hardware to ensure survival rather than pointless sacrifice.

Hahahahaha. Whoa. See, I'm right! And I was only half-joking. Lol.

That lightsaber is really the dumbest.

Doesn't seem very Nazi-esque

Loved my first viewing of it and kept up with everything pretty good. But there is A LOT going on. The 2nd time I knew how everything played out and I was able to let each scene kinda soak in. Listen to the little nuances in dialogue. Most things are explained, implied or assumed.

Also I definitely heard McGregor's voice during that flashback scene.
I really enjoyedy first viewing with the midnight crowd, but there was quite a bit of dialogue that I didn't hear properly so I'm definitely listening intently.
I want Lando to be governor of a system.... the Lando System

is that part of the old EU?

No, the Uprising mobile game (which is canon) covers this. Bespin, actually the entire Anoat sector, falls under Imperial control. After Endor, the governor - Adelhard - splits the sector off into Space North Korea, establishing the Iron Blockade to prevent information about the Imperial loss getting in or out and ruling it as his own fiefdom, but of course rebels are trying to overthrow him.

Tried 3D for my second viewing. I actually thought the 3D itself was pretty good...nice depth between the background and foreground that I didn't notice in my 2D viewing, but holy fuck the blurriness and the darkening of the picture was just not worth it.

They've got to find a solution for this with 3D moving forward.

Godzilla was the last time that I saw a movie in 3D; problems of blurriness, losing focus, desatursing colors convinced me to give up on watching movies in 3D

The Hayden Christensen vision seems like an awesome idea, I wouldn't mind them revisiting that in the future.
Low-key also want to see if Christensen can do good when directed by someone who is competent with actors, I feel like he has it in him from his other work. Vader got a redemption, maybe Christensen's acting should too.

This it was better the second time. Even the part in the middle which the first time I thought dragged had lots of great character moments.

It seems like Ren was talking to Anakins ghost because of all the "show me again the power of the dark side" or whatever he was saying when talking to the mask.

I like the idea that Anakin's force ghost turns to the dark side again. Probably because Yoda and Obi Wan's force ghosts continue to treat him like shit post-RotJ.

Agree, I saw it in 4DX. The blurriness, the ghosting, and the 12fps per eyes was a horrible jittery mess... Why are we not showing 3D films at 48fps again?

Christensen showing up from 80 years since he last looked like that, all blue & glowy

"the FUCK is wrong with you, little kid? Huh? You greasy fucking chump. You make me sick. Stop calling this number."

You can see Lucas literally asking him to deliver every one of his lines the way he did, in the making of.

Poor guy doesn't deserve the hate.

As I said, no actor would ever survive the "sand" line.

He's actually pretty good for the most part. Lucas just had him is one mode: WHINY.

The only time I really noticed it feeling off, was in that shot of the Star Destroyer. The most of it felt a few meters in front of me. It was actually really cool, but it was the only time I was distracted and taken out of the movie due to the effect.

I hate Finn's backstory of being Stormtrooper from birth. It just ruins the ability for a good backstory that reinforced his arc and didn't add further needless complexity onto Stormtroopers. Like, how about he just be some guy who joined up with the First Order to pay back some debts he had. And, thanks to his laziness or craftiness got a nice cushy job in sanitation so he didn't have to worry about dying in any fight. This of course would reinforce his cowardly trait, of being the guy who tries to run/talk his way far from a fight rather than get involved.

His story is actually somewhat interesting because as mentioned in the movie he is a pretty normal example of a stormtrooper, never showing any rebellious nature or resistance to his indoctrination. His superiors are mystified why he turned against them and this could play into future movies with a possible trooper revolt, etc. Maybe he will be a stormtrooper Spartacus

The writing for Anakin was dogshit. I heard that Hayden tried to improvise by Lucas kept cutting him off to keep him on script.

The whole point of FN-2187's backstory is to act as an inverse parallel of Kylo Ren's. Ren is taken to the Jedi when he's young, Finn is taken to the First Order when he's young. Ren betrays the Jedi, Finn betrays the first order. Both are trying to escape their pasts by running as far as possible in the opposite direction. Ren has a fanatical obedience to First Order leadership, Finn openly acts in defiance of it.

I've said this before, but much as I want them to keep Hayden far and clear of these movies, I am morbidly curious about the possibility of Rian Johnson redeeming Hayden's performance.

I think people can't get over what they imagined the characters should be and it's blinded them somewhat.

The film lays it out perfectly for the final fight to make sense. Yes, Rey's force background is an unknown but it's a thread to be answered later. Rey is skilled, survivor, a fighter with weapon skills and does get in trouble, captured. Ren is unbalanced, seriously injured, emotional scared of Rey and is on the edge after killing Han. Finn is a stormtrooper and not of the OT useless brigade, he is part of a squad hunting Luke Skywalker and are trained in melee combat as shown, he gives Kylo a short good fight. Chewie's weapon is a beast shown that way a few times.

Let me just say I really enjoyed the film but I'm not at all ready to stand up and sing it's praises. I need to see it a few more times, which I'm going to, before I really make up my mind. I loved Rey, Finn, and Poe. Han and Chewie were great. I could have used more Leia and it was annoying how little of Luke we got. The ground fight scenes were great, all of them. All those actions sequences work well for me. I hope have more ground combat or at least aerial combat. Speaking of which the X-wing combat above Maz's was great. That long shot of Poe flying with Finn, Han, and Chewie on the ground was great. More of that please. I really enjoy what they're doing with Rey and Finn's friendship and possible relationship. Same with Finn and Poe's friendship. The use of BB-8 was really good. Kylo Ren was an interesting surprise for me. Especially since it he has some interesting call backs to the past EU and Jacen Solo be they intentional or not. I really appreciated that. My concern with Han and Leia was that they were going to break up that relationship. My head canon, until shown otherwise, is that a lot of relationship stuff for the two of them could mirror some of the stuff they went through in the old EU. Keeping them together was important for me and for the most part they did and it's understandable why they would have separated in the film. It was also clear they still loved each other and couldn't even pretend they didn't.

However the X-wing combat around the Starkiller was poor. That entire sequence was disappointing save for the very end with Poe. I know it wasn't a focus but it felt like it wasn't even important. You likely could have done that entire ending sequence without it for the most part and somehow redid the bombing of the inside so other way. It felt like those X-wings were there just to have an X-wing fight to play on the nostalgia of the Death Run run in A New Hope and the Trade Federation attack in The Phantom Menace. That didn't work for me at all. I also don't think they should have played the superweapon card so soon.

Phasma was completely pointless as well. Her character is a prime example of why I do not buy toys of characters before the film comes out. We don't know what the characters will be like or how much they'll be in the film. Nearly everything we've see of her in the trailers and promotional footage is almost all of her appearance.

Right now there is a lot I really enjoyed about the film and a few things I had issues with and a few of them were things I was concerned would happen. Not plot wise but with how the film was structured and paced.

This film need far more exposition. People complain that some films have to much of it but this is a film I feel needed a little more. I say this as a person that is a Star Wars fan, read the EU when I was younger, read up on the current events after the slate was wiped clean. There are things that should have been explained by characters or been in that opening crawl. You had a character in Rey where you could explain certain things and it wouldn't have take people out of the film. She has no knowledge of why the galaxy is the way it is it seems. A short conversation about the stories she's heard and what really happen was all that was needed. Instead pushing that information to visual guides, etc.

Disney doesn't get that Star Wars isn't the same as marvel. Guardians and captain America are pretty different. Star Wars is Star Wars, too many movies will dilute the name.

This is ultimately my biggest concern about the Disney's handling things. Especially if the films move at the rapid pace that TFA does. I'm going to say something that some might hate. There was not enough world building in this film. That was something Lucas did very well in the prequels. He made the locations and worlds scenes took place in feel alive. Like actually locations. Doesn't matter if he used to much CGI or not. It felt like the characters were going from world to world. That's not to say there isn't some of that in the new film but it's limited. As a fan of world building that was one of the things that I loved about the prequels and why I will never hate them the way some do. I don't think that is something people hate about the prequels.

They need to expand this universe they're working in and it has to expand on the screen not just in the novels or the comics. What locations we see can't just be limited to the characters immediate locations and nothing else. I fear if they're pushing these films out fairly quickly that's what we're going to get because there simply won't be time. I love the details JJ put into stuff like the food Rey was eating. That flip side of that with the world at large can and should be done as well.

Certain things also needed to be explained. I get the feeling there was entire sub-plot removed from film. The close up on the characters when the planets were destroyed by the Starkiller is what makes me think that. That close up was suppose to have meant something and we were suppose to know the importance of those planets being destroyed. I would guess that would have slowed down the film instead of allowing it to move from one action sequence to the next.

I always assumed the "awakening" was referencing Finn. He spontaneously developed an identity when he was needed.

"I'm Finn."

"I'm Finn!"

"I'm Finn!"

etc etc.

I don't buy that. It would completely ruin Vader's salvation with Luke in ROTJ. But it could be ghost Palpatine appearing to Kylo as Vader.

I honestly expect VIII to get delayed until Dec 2017. We haven't had a Rogue 1 teaser yet (i know that concept thing is out there) and by the time marketing ramps up for that VII will be six months away. Its too tight.

Great points about the world building. I had no clue what planet they were on by the end. No one knows what planets were blown up. What are the relationship of these planets in space? It wasn't until I read the book and played the infinity game that I learned the planets. Yes the prequels did that extremely well.

What is the name of the battle of this movie? battle of starkiller base?

Or the dark side of the force can remain imprinted somehow. So even if Anakin went good, there is still a shadow of Vader present.

Has there been any explanation as to how he froze the lazerfire? that seemed like a new thing.

I think people try to make too much sense about how the force works in the details, like powers can be listed like in the dumb prequels. Anything is possible as far as I care. He used the force, really don't need more of an explanation than that.

I understand that completely. Almost like I want a glimpse into an alternate universe to see if it would be good.
