So where does the end duel of The Force Awakens rank within all SW duels? [SPOILERS]

Sorry for yet another Star Wars thread, but I came back from watching the movie and loved the duel between Ren and Finn/Rey. Where does this duel rank overall in your opinions? I personally rank it the best, maybe tying with Vader Vs Luke in ROTJ. The duel was brutal, short, and the blows felt like they had impact. It was overall one of the best SW duels tbh

For me it's definitely sitting comfortably in third place:

I. Luke vs. Vader in ROTJ
II. Luke vs. Vader in TESB
III. Kylo Ren vs. Rey/Finn in TFA
IV. Vader vs. Obi-Wan in ANH

Best one so far.

It has the gravitas and dramatic effect that the duels in the OT had while not being super wooden like a lot of the duels in the OT.

Shit on the PT all you want but they had by far the best lightsaber battles. OT can't hold a candle shit looks dated as fuck in comparison.

I disliked the part where Rey just closes her eyes while Kylo patiently waits for her to power up, and then she suddenly goes from holding her own to kicking his ass. It didn't feel earned.

Could've been better illustrated by Rey figuring out how to break out of Kylo's Force Stasis or something. Why didn't he use that ability at all in the duel again?

Once you get over the fact that Rey and Finn fought better than basically every other Jedi except ROTS Anakin despite having no Lightsaber training, the duels in TFA are easily the most interesting IMO.

Except for that Stephanie Meyer tier deus ex machina where Rey contemplates going super saiyan while a lightsaber is right in her face.

Below both Luke vs Vader duels, above anything else. Just a spectacular fight with some fantastic visual touches like the use of colored light and the trees getting chopped through.

I really dislike the OT duels and I really like the Prequel Duels.

Obi Wan + Qui Gon Vs Maul is incredible.

TFA ranks pretty highly to be honest. It's a good fight.

He was waiting because he just asked for her to join him. Would be dumb to just kill her right after doing that.

Agreed. It's driven more by survival instinct rather than balletic expressions of skill.

If you watch some of the prequel trilogy fights, they're actually pretty boring. The camera stays completely still. The sabers wave robotically and always seem to target the other saber rather than its user. There's no sense of tension, or one side getting the upper hand. It's dudes hitting each other with sticks until one leaves themselves uncharacteristically open for a killing blow.

I really like the way it was coreographed and shot. It's frantic, exciting, and the lightsabers feel like they have real weight to them.

But no way I would put it near ESB or ROTJ. Simply because the emotion and the tension isn't as strong as those fights... But it's not really a fair comparison, since this is only the first part of a trilogy.

Last. It's not like the choreography was awesome and there wasn't a whole ton of emotional baggage beyond evil person and good person just learning their powers. The force lightsaber pull was pretty great.

Not really. They looked way too choreographed. Like the lightsabers weren't even being swung to kill, but rather to hit the opponents...

In TFA and even the OT it looks like people are swinging with the intent to kill.

Not as good as the Luke vs Vader fights (since obviously the stakes where higher), but better than the rest

Probably near the bottom because it shouldn't have ended the way it did. Rey really used the force like a Kaioken power up to win the fight.

Absolutely disgusting

Better choreographed & acted than anything else in the franchise, but not sure if it has the dramatic weight of some of the OG SW duels like Luke losing his hand & finding out Vader is his father and the final duel in ROTJ. So overall the scene wasn't perhaps as impactful as those duels.

They did it for the swag and disrespect

Even though anakin is a mega bitch him vs. obi wan in ROTS is Gucci as hell

Edit: wait are people just discussing the fights, or also the context of the fights in terms of the story and how dire it was? If it's just the fights I don't see how some of the PT doesn't win, even if it was too choreographed it made it much more exciting.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Just the fact that it feels like they're swinging light sabers and not flailing with sticks makes VII the best out of all the movies.

Darth Maul in PM is a close second. Simply because he's god and George Lucas sucks.

They lose their hands in the second film of the trilogy. She'll see soon enough.

He didn't finish her because he was trying to get her to go to the Dark Side.

Was getting caught part of your plan?

We're talking about the same universe where Darth Maul gets beat by a padawan due to a 3 second delay after a flip

This is true.. The prequels did a great job of portraying how master swordsmen should look with lightsabers

Probably the best overall. The fight itself is obviously a lot more OT than PT in it's choreography, focusing on telling a story with the fight rather than cool but mindless dance-fighting, but the cinematography and editing manages to inject a lot of energy into the fight itself, basically making it the best of both worlds.

I say forth or fifth maybe third, the sequels was more about the atmosphere and tension. Although, the prequels seem like athletic sword users that use the force to aid in there combat and in some case looked like what some actual lightsaber users would fight like besides some of unnecessary flashy moves( but I think they were trying to angle that the jedi was suppose to be more graceful). To me it wasn't as interesting as the prequels or had the tension or impactful as the OT. The animations had better duels.

Similar things happened in Obi-Wan vs Maul and RotJ's Luke vs Vader bout, both often (rightfully) considered some of the best fights in the franchise.

OT battles are dated (but still good)

PT battles are too over the top / CGI driven

TFA felt juuuuuuuust right

Talking LS battles only.

For me, it's all about the duels that change the character after the duel.(Regardless of choreography). Obi/Qui vs Maul was far more impactful than Rey vs Kylo (so far). All the Luke vs Vader duels are impactful. Lukes life is different after ever duel he witnessed or participated in.

My rushed rankings:

1. Revenge of the Sith-Ani vs Obi
2. Empire Strikes Back - Luke vs Vader
3. Phantom Menace duel
4. The Force Awakens
5 Attack of the Clones
6. Return of the Jedi

the fight between kylo and rey was amazing because it's the first time in the entire saga that we saw really the dark side and the good side fighting each other with principal characters. Luke didn"t want to kill his father, it became epic when Anakin learn about Leia.
Obiwan never wanted to kill Anakin , even in Mustaphar...
This fight has no feeling. Kylo don't know Rey (or did he?) and she don't know Kylo. He just made something very dark and horrific...
This fight was awesome like the beginning of a fight between Ganon and Link. I said it multiple times on this forum but i'm still shocked how this fight was good.

Fights in the OT are dumb as fuck. Maybe the one in TPM is decent, but 2 and 3 have the fucking worst
5 > 7 > 6 > 4 > 1 > whatever
