Well...if they keep the anime story straight instead of jumping around like the manga, there will be plenty of fight.
Just less titans.

I don't understand why Berserk need CG, seem you can get away with abusing quick cut, close-up and still for the properties

I am suffering choice paralysis on my anime of the year list.

Nothing I watched was God Tier but there were a lot of Good anime I watched this year.

No they just need to get to the fucking basement.
lmao won't happen before at least another year of boring politics and bullshit

BTW, you have Little Witch Academia listed as an honorable mention, when you can list it as an OVA/movie so it gets credit for it's respective AOTY category.

Gundam is back bitches. Nagai and Mari Okada saved Gundam.

But it doesnt appear it would do much higher than G no Reconguista:(

Starmyu is most surprising finally another near 10k male idol series but not enough to reach utapri heights. I wonder if it will ever be possible for a male idol series to do that well again.

That Berserk CGI...

probably not gonna watch it. The manga's art is excellent, so getting this huge downgrade won't be worth any amount of animation they put into it.

Haikyuu S2 12

Here the enlongated layout, focusing on how far the character is stretching out, emphasizes the desperation the captain feels as he makes a crazy last-ditch effort to stop the match point.

G7d3Weh.jpg

This slanted, low angle, from which the character grows to dominate the whole screen, emphasizes how intimating his 201 meter height is.

Even though this episode cut a few more corners than the series is wont to do, it still had standout cuts and layouts. The opposing team's desperate last-minute rally, connected with its backstory, was especially well done, and a good way of making you feel for a one-off, fairly weak team who Karasuno easily crushes.

I guess I'll have to start Oregairu and maybe Euphonium. I haven't seen enough animes that I'd like to include in my AOTY list. lol I'll have to put up with that Hachiman guy. Not every main character can be as good as Ararararagi.

Hibike euphonium ova
This one is great. The story focus on monaka team aka the team that failed the selection. We get to see what Kazuki and co did before the concert and the aftermath of Kazuki confession. There's a running scene too.

Woke up and saw the new Berserk PV... Boy does it look ugly. The music was also terrible fuck this ugly cg shit. Not a good way to start the day.

Hibike! Euphonium OVA

Another angle on Hazuki and the rest who didn't get into the performing team. Can't say I enjoyed this OVA much. Sometimes the character interactions just feel a tad too melodramatic and that's the case for this episode. Hazuki's and Shuuichi's relationship was properly and swiftly dealt with in the airing episodes anyways so going through the very same notions we already saw another time was redundant.

Then again, this kind of OVA isn't supposed to be essential and it does at least fill in what happened to the non-competitors.

When was the last semi-major hit for a TV mech show? It does feel like mecha as a genre is on its deathbed and just getting phased out with the transition to CGI.

CG hasn't exactly stopped mecha from being made. If you look at Japan Animator Expo, it's clear that there are still animators who want to draw robots, whether in 2D or CG. New Gundam and Macross entries are still being made, and there's consistently original anime that features mecha prominently. You can talk about a decline in quality if you want, but there's no sign that mecha is going to just stop being made.

Anyway, while there haven't been 10k+ selling mecha TV series in the past couple years, there are mecha shows just a little below that threshold.

2013: Gundam Build Fighters (9351), Suisei no Gargantia (9101)
2014: Aldonah Zero (8729)
2015: Fafner Exodus (8124)

Hey Cosmick, is this what you were talking about?

From the voting thread:
1. One Punch Man; The only anime series I've watched from start to end in over a decade and didn't feel awkward for watching it.

I can't say I didn't start laughing obnoxiously when I saw it.

There are animators that seemingly want to do it but productions centering around them have largely dried up. High level productions virtually don't even exist anymore unless Gundam is attached and Sunrise using it for toy/merch purposes. BONES tries to some extent and you get the occasional project like the upcoming one for PA Works but it feels like it slowed all the way down.

And of two of those, I'm not sure Gargantia or Aldnoah were considered actual successes. Aniplex and A1 were banking on Aldnoah being that Gundam killer for that CG studio. I don't even know what the hell happened with Gargantia.

There is no way a faithful adaptation of Berserk will be a TV series. It will either be OVAs or movies. That's the only way they can be made.

If they want to bank Aldnoah Zero as a Gundam Killer maybe they shouldn't have hired the guy who wrote Boku no Pico, a plot that is done within 24 episodes and a show title which centers on the tech instead of the mech. Good guys mech is generic army green or orange while the enemy fodder of the week has unique cool looking mechs...how can they sell mech merchandise like that. They doing every thing opposite of Gundam lol.

Because of the gore and violence?
It would just air late night or have tv censorship like Jojo.

Berserk is not Jojo. It's more akin to Hellsing. The core audiences for it in Japan are adults who expect the violence not to be toned down at all, and there to be graphic nudity and sex/rape. Demographics are very important to publishers when deciding how to produce adaptations.

Think of this as Game of Thrones, where in the US such a show would never be considered for network TV. But unlike the US where HBO and Showtime are legit options with a high viewer base, in Japan the only option would be cable channels like Animax or Pay Per View. Those are extremely unappealing options for business reasons, unless there are other arrangements in place. Like for example. Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex was exclusively PPV on SkyPerfect TV in Japan, because they were already satisfied that they had cut a deal for a western release with co-production money in the bank. In the past, one option would have been to air something like this on WOWOW, a cable channel in Japan similar to HBO with a decent viewer base. They used to produce quite a number of anime series as well, but at some point they shifted gears in their programming and stopped doing so.

Alright, so the CG in Berserk at least doesn't look as bad as that one still-frame we got from the Twitter. Like, it's still less then ideal compared to traditional animation but at least it doesn't look like the worst examples of CG we've gotten in anime.

I do hope there's more shots like this that look like this. I especially like the camera work used for this cut, where it goes to travel along the sword as he swings it. All in all, it could look a lot worse than it does. That walk-cycle at the begining was terrible, though. I don't remember but I also feel like this is a PV cut from original footage as I don't think I recall Guts fighting these types of skeletons? So the final product could end up looking a lot different. And the trailer is quoting Puck's dialogue from the first chapter, iirc.

The plot isn't done, what are you talking about? Slaine hasn't won yet.

On one hand I feel really bad for hardcore Berserk fans but on the other hand I can't help but laugh how they always get screwed over every time. They never get a break. I mean I like Berserk but I'm at a point where I don't get too attached. However, I'm still glad on what we got and will take it without being salty because this may be the last anime adaptation we may get.

Still I found it funny when some people said a Berserk anime adaption would blow away the competition in 2016. Karma is truly a bitch.

The OPM debate is already alive and well in the first two pages of the voting thread.

BTW, why is "Salt" and "salty" the standard response to further instigate things? Find something new and a little more clever people.. That is old already; damn internet culture...
