Games with Gorgeous Skyboxes

10 points to whoever can guess this

An N64 game?

Pilot Wings or Mario?

gotta go with Witcher 3
i mean, damn... as vesemir says, ''[witcher 3] knows how to choose 'em'

game has day, night, and orange but it sure is pretty

huge fan of GTA V and it does have a gorgeous 'sky' but I think it's less about the actual sky box and more the overall feel of the broader world. still gorgeous though and great variety.

(same location, all start at about 4am at dawn through the twilight, different weather)

rainy

mass effect series in general probably owns this topic but it's been a few years since I've played it so not sure the best examples.

technically, driveclub is insane. an ok example, not great but they're also pretty fair I think too since they're just random things i chose from actual gameplay

the way those clouds move in the skybox, for example /drool

or the storm cloud movement

technically awesome. witcher 3 is still my fave just because... well, driveclub feels like a photo, witcher 3 feels like a painting. both their skies are awesome in their own way.

oh, and gotta add FF XIV... actually it may not be an obvious choice because most of its skyboxes are not that particularly special... but especially in the snowy north, FF XIV has one of the most mesmerizingly starry night skies in a game... the stars are just amazing. you gotta hide the HUD and play in a pitch black dark room to appreciate it but darn are its starry night skies mesmerizing.

Does ArmA III count? It could be cheating; it has an accurate depiction of stars in reference to the earth, so it's just a real life "skybox" in a game.

The first Mass Effect :

First time I landed on a planet orbiting a Red Giant, and the trippy synth music kicked on, I entered SciFi Nirvana (or Nerdvana).

I think that was the thing I missed most in ME2 - that feeling that your a small piece in a massive, alien, beautiful universe. Helped that I actually liked the Mako handling (PC) so exploring was quite fun.

I really love the nighttime skyboxes in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Wii U). Couldn't find good screenshots sadly. :( Here's a crappy one for Misty Peaks:

It looks way better than that though, if you pan the camera around you can see the milky way and shit, it looks great.

Wind Waker had such a nice sky that fit very well with the sea. The weather, clouds and ocean actually made sailing something I wanted to do in the game.

Spyro the Dragon had absolutely amazing skies considering it was a PS1 game. They used interpolated color blending per vertex with some really solid color choices and composition.

They are alright. There wasn't a lot that really stood out as being amazing or anywhere near Bungie's levels. That said Halo 5 is really good at putting ships (both giant ships and small ships but lots of them) in the sky and moving them around, but I don't think that really qualifies as a skybox.

Stuff like this:
They do look a lot better in motion, ships flying around everywhere and battle going on.

Here's a slightly better shot of that one:

I really liked this one:
Awesome sense of scale.

Playing destiny on the moon atm and even that skybox despite its simpleness is beautiful. Also didn't realize objects can fall and crash into the distance on the moon....small feature I though was cool. But it really does a good job capturing beauty from the moon.

Unreal had some pretty nice skyboxes for its time. Sometimes you could see stuff like floating islands in the distance.

Of shooters from that period, Shogo and Blood 2 actually had pretty skyboxes too. Sadly I can't find any good examples of screenshots online.

I know Halo 4's skyboxes can be decisive because up close they dramatically lose quality, but man... this was a moment.

H2:A maps also had great ones. Warlord and Remnant especially

Destiny, Bloodborne, and Xenoblade X are three games from this year that really impressed me with the skyboxes. Witcher 3 was also quite good but didn't leave as strong of an impression.
