No love for Absolute Drift?

Problem until now was that like some other indie games it had problems with the X1 pad on Win10 but there's now a beta that fixes this.

Only -35% and not everyone like drifting but if you do this is a must have, clean, cool visuals, good controls that reward practice and one of the best soundtracks of the year.

Got nothing but love, still terrible at it though

Thanks for the impressions on Big Pharma!
The screens made it seem like a tycoon game which I was really digging, but seeing it described as more of a programming game akin to spacechem has made me hold of my purchase. Spacechem was enjoyable but hard as nails.

Its a mixture of the two, and SpaceChem is easily the toughest game in the whole genre. The "programming" part is still rather easy compared to SpaceChem or even Infinifactory as it also focusses on the economic aspects. If you loved SpaceChem, but it was too hard, it still might be worth a look. But yeah, its not a tycoon game.

There arent that many good ones unfortunately as the genre seemed to drift off into Flash territory, but Software Inc. is probably the closest (and damn good).

True, hard to find a good one on steam nowadays. I enjoyed my time with empire TV tycoon, fun game about running a tv channel against competing stations. If he wants a shot of nostalgia the rollercoaster tycoon games are always great, plus I believe they have a new one coming out soon. Also not sure if its technically a tycoon game, but Prison Architect is a great game. Kinda like rollercoaster tycoon where you build hoe you want then spend your time managing and in this case keeping the place secure.

Forgot about this one

You know how "roguelike" gets tossed around for every game that has permadeath and procedural generation? Well, this is the real thing, a sprawling complex old-school turn-based roguelike set in a far-future science fantasy world. The sheer amount of depth and character customization is awesome, from photosynthetic skin to manually controlling your adrenal system

That would be a good one but my wife and I played a ton of that on PS4 locally. Great game, but I think I have burned myself out on it!

We picked up Rampage Knights and Vermintide just now so hopefully those are good, too.
Not exactly an indie game, but Lara Croft & The Temple of Osiris is a novel co-op experience. I'd mention The Guardian of Light as well, but unlike the former it only supports up to two players. Otherwise, have a look at Monaco: What's Yours is Mine. If you don't mind dungeon crawlers either, there's Hammerwatch and the latest Gauntlet, which was developed by the Magicka / Helldivers peeps.

Build vehicles block by block (sub, ship, plane, airship, spaceship), use those designs to make a fleet and conquer the planet in a strategic campaign or just smaller missions. Probably the most in-depth block builder, everything is a large multi-part structure, be it an engine with individual cylinders, turbochargers, etc or a cannon that must be built with coolers, gauge increases, customized ammo and so on. While technically incomplete the game is still highly developed already and the community is building both efficient death machines and 1:1 replicas of vessels from all ages. Needless to say this game requires serious dedication to get a lot out of.

So I just decided it annoys me to no end that Cubesis has "mixed" reviews (20 reviews so far). Definitely doesnt deserve that. I'll gift out 8 or so copies of Cubesis for impressions here (and preferably steam reviews to push up that review average, if you like it).

The game's writing is extremely obnoxious, that makes you want to hate it from the get go.

I found it adorable *shrug*
Its a super small budget game and the dev obviously didnt have much experience in the area.
But anyway, you wont have much "writing" after the tutorial anyway.

I added it to my wishlist. When I comb through and pick up my last round of games I will likely pick this one up. It sounds like it'd be right up my alley. I'll be sure to leave a review if I enjoy the experience.

I am interested, it's on my wishlist. Hoping for some gaf impressions.

My impressions back in the monthly Indie threads:
Surprisingly good game. The dev contacted me and asked for some impressions, but I already had this on my radar before. Its pretty short with 2-3 hours for a first playthrough (so maybe keep an eye on it during the Steam sales if that is important to you), but the VERY challenging higher difficulties and challenges through achievements (beat X level by doing Y, etc) add a lot of replayability to it. Its also just... plain fun. Throughout those 2-3 hours, the game constantly introduces new enemy types and a wide range of weapons, so you always have something new to play around with/learn and the level design/enemy hordes keep you on your toes for most of the game.

Another thing worth mentioning is the polish, which I havent found often in such a game. In contrast du many other 2D platformers, it uses a VERY well done comic style, nunanced through snarky comments, a very moody soundtrack and extremely pretty animations. I had more than one moment, where I was marvelling at small graphical details, like the multiple subtle layers of background animations, very fluid character animations, extremely satisfying killing animations or small details like an in-style animated water shadow when you are walking in water or ... splashes from bullet cases hitting the water:

This game is drenched in love for making games, I am really surprised to see it seems to be one of the devs first efforts into game developing (at least according to the devs website). Apparently the dev is also working on a horde/MP mode to alleviate the playtime concerns. Really fun game, definitely going into my highly recommended or recommende list next month.

Great thread. Went through it all and bought/wishlisted a whole lot of things.
Although the format does encourage buying things based on their presentation/visual styles alone, which I've been guilty of a lot in the past (and regretted few of the purchases).

True, but most games should be pretty good. The premise is to have games here that you should like if you like the presentation/blurb, as I wont include all games.

I forgot to mention that this thread got me to buy a couple of great iOS games (that are also on Steam). I'm also waiting for a couple more that are releasing on iOS next year.

Now that I look at the list I didn't see the one game that made me rethink my position on this.

Which game was it?

You guys should check out Planet Diver

http://store.steampowered.com/app/417980

It's similar to Downwell but doesn't have shooting, it's more about freefalling down a pit. Controls are simple you move left and right, press down to boost and up to brake. When you brake you can evade enemies and environmental hazards. When you boost you can charge through enemies to refill your health meter and the value of gems you can pick up increases the faster you are moving.

There is a story mode that has 3 different worlds with 25 levels each, within each level there are objectives like 'hug the wall for x seconds' or 'get a combo of x kills' etc. There is also an endless arcade mode and leaderboards for both.

It's currently 75% off and $.99 and there is quite a bit of content for how cheap it is. It's also pretty fun and the quick arcadey play sessions make you want to play just one more about twenty times over. Also includes Achievements and Trading Cards.

hidden gem/10

also you can play as Samus Aran

Play Elliot Quest. It's a really good game. Here's the piece from the last indie thread:

Elliot Quest - $4.99 (50% off)

A homage to Zelda 2 and old-school NES platformer games. Elliot Quest doesn't mark your world map with a glowing sign showing to were you need to go or which item you need to collect to progress through the game, instead it rewards exploring the dungeons and keeping notes of places you still can't go because you're missing an item or ability. The lack of hints kind of make you feel good for discovering how to get to a new part, or realizing that you can use an ability in a way you didn't thought was possible.

Thanks Toma for another year of great indie games curation and proselytization! I didn't have the time to participate more actively but I was always lurking searching for another great game to play.

Cubesis is bought and tis-100, rymdresa, running with rifles and undertale. I'm still debating between caves of qud, infinifactory or sunless sea though.

And of course, wish everyone here a great 2016 filled with great video games! Cheers everyone!

EQ is a good game in its own right, but if someone is looking for a Metroidesque* with demanding exploration, challenging combat and fiendish puzzles, they should be looking at Environmental Station Alpha. It does everything EQ does but better. For one, it doesn't force you to play through entire levels 50 times just to get past that point on the overworld map, so right there it's clearly the better game. Jokes aside, it's really damn good and a must for anyone who liked EQ.

*I saw this word recently and like it a lot more than "Metroidvania". Who's with me?

More like Metroid-esque. It's not exactly a new word. -esque is the suffix and can be used with anything. Castlevania-esque. Dark Souls-esque. Arkham Asylum-esque. Metroid-esque

Yeah, I use Metroid-like myself. I don't really care for the vania part of the term.

I plan on playing ESA during the next sale, or when it drops a tiny bit more. I'm currently in the middle of Finding Teddy 2, and I can only take so much at one time.

Ori is pretty damn good.

Not perfect though. There's a distinct lack of boss fights and some platforming sections are bullshit. Other than that, great stuff.

Curious to play Axiom Verge now. Probably will wait for a bigger discount though.

Thinking about finally picking up Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines.

Anyone know how it runs on Windows 10?

Edit: wrong thread ffs

I haven't read much of the thread, but I will see if I can recommend some more games.

Amazing work by the OP. Thank you very much for your efforts.

It was so comfortable to scroll through the list and see everything relevant at once. The pictures in particular helped a lot and made recognition and judgement fast and easy.

Just bought:
  • To the moon
  • The Vanishing of Ethan Varter
  • The Stanley Parable
  • The Cat Lady

I am here to recommend a criminally underlooked gem to all of you. It came out about a month ago. If you're a fan of RPGs, 4X games, Turn based combat systems, C&C, the best crafting system in any game for years(I've played Atelier games, mind you), and/or innovative ways to approach non-combat gameplay, this game is absolutely for you.

The game is called Thea: The Awakening. You may view more of it here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/378720/

The game is hard as nails, mind you. Every decision you make will have drastic effects on both you and your people and the world around you.

Edit:

An example of the crafting:

This is just for making any given 1-h sword. Each one of those squares has multiple types of ingredients that can fit in them for drastically different effects/weapons.

This is how dialogue/events are presented. It is also voiced a lot of the time:

I have that game on my wishlist, looks great.
