Indie Games 2015 [December] Let's talk about anything Indie!

Picked up Subterrain due to a recommendation in the other thread, and it's pretty cool so far. While the shooting doesn't feel as powerful and hefty as I'd like, the game excels in other ways.

One, the detailed grimy aesthetic
Subterrain_Sit.jpg
Subterrain_Sleep.jpg

Two, the game does a good job at making you feel like you're exploring a place that's falling apart and slowly getting overrun. You need to make sure your thermal regulator and oxygen tank is charged before venturing out. You need to keep the spreading alien mutation from spreading. You only have enough generator energy to power up certain areas and traveling between areas take in-game time, so longer trips means the infection will have spread more by the time you reach your destination or you might starve along the way

Are there any good indie beat 'em ups? I don't mean something like Elysian where it's about precision combo making like DMC or Bayonetta, I'm talking about "mash button for awesome combo" like Final Fight.

2D or 3D is fine and preferably only an action game and not a platformer or adventure hybrid.

Foul Play is pretty cool, has a bit of a repetitive midgame but the combat and interesting health system make up for it.

Good call. Very simple and intuitive combat system in that one, it's very easy to just rack up 150 hit chains and full combo the whole level without using much precision (and without the game feeling too simplistic and shallow).

Picked up Helldivers. Man, it's good. The weapons have such a great heft and power to them, and there's a surprising amount of strategy in choosing which stratagems to use and when to use them. I haven't done any MP chaos yet.

Anyone here playing it on PC?

Played my fill of that on vita I am afraid, I would only really be tempted to double dip if it was a lot cheaper or included all the dlc. It's a good game though, glad it's getting more of a audience. If you dipped into the dlc weapons look into trying the robot drones. I can't remember it's name exactly but their is a gun drone that just follows you around and shoots out the weaker targets gunning for you. Saved my life more times then I can count.

Oh, nice! January's IndieBox is Nuclear Throne. Been waiting for that to leave EA, so I'm pretty happy to see it get its IB rather quickly so I don't end up double-buying (which almost always happens for me with IB).

I am slowly inching towards convincing enough people to try it to increase Cubesis' review average. 10 pos :10 neg in the beginning, 14:10 currently and apparently I might need 24/10 (so 10 more) to switch it to positive.
In case anyone else wonders: A game needs 70% positive voices to get the positive moniker.

Eidolon is only on mixed too, definitely doesnt deserve that. Its currently sitting at 64% with 216 reviews, so it would need around 12-13 more positive reviews to switch to positive.

...we should totally push those games more if we can. We might actually make a difference here. :D

Hey guys! How's the season going?

Have your heard about this retro-racer called Slipstream?
The team is just two guys, and it's looking pretty excellent:

They've got this sweet VHS filter going on too:

(I've seen this in action and it's way cool)
And there's a crowdfunding if you're interested. They say the game will feature a story mode and the music is great:

We should definitely try and push Steam games that we have - I'm guilty of not reviewing stuff on Steam (thinking it wouldn't make a difference) but I guess it does.

I'll work through my library this evening.

Only at $1,666? That's a shame. I'll make a thread later. Deserves more attention

Yeah, just did that as well. But I guess its more effective to focus on single games instead for now. Let me know if there is anything else hovering on mixed that shouldnt.

Isn't it? I'm afraid many people won't jump in cause it is some weeks old, but is has great potential. Maybe I can help with that post?

And Zynx, superficially yeah, definitely resembles Drift Stage. But with the slipstream mechanic proper, different game modes and the more authentic æsthetics (not meaning DS' neo-retro isn't great) I believe it's its own thing.

I've seen crazier things happen with Kickstarters. The last few days of Four Sided Fantasy and Neverending Nightmares were insane

Thinking of an attractive thread title. Any suggestions? The format I typically use is:

Slipstream |KS| [Blurb]

But mid/end December isn't a good time to launch a KS unfortunately. Just like June campaigns are overshadowed by E3 coverage, December campaigns are overshadowed by GOTY articles. Very hard to get media exposure. The next big campaigns aren't hitting till January (Consortium 2, Planet Nomads, etc)

The description for Slipstream says they'll have missions where you're supposed to chase down and ram other cars... Retool it into a Chase HQ clone and I will back it with a million dollars.

Got a snippet of new info on that space game from the NEO Scavenger dev

No title yet, but he describes it as:
Basically: Sort of a mashup of Starflight, Prison Architect, and some Firefly.
So yeah, be very excited

Was going through my Steam library. Huh, forgot about the Ghost Song beta. 20 minutes later...Ghost Song preordered

I absolutely can't wait to play the finished game

So talking about can't wait, what are some of your most anticipated 2016 indies? Just did a post on my blog about that and I could have basically swapped out the ten I choose with countless other permutations. 2016 is looking like another insane year for indies.

January, we're getting Slain and The Witness. And then Firewatch and Unravel in February. Talk about a strong start.

(Although to be fair, last January gave us Besiege and Infinifactory)

If I really had to narrow it down, Rain World, SuperHOT, and Twin Souls would probably top my list though

Something IndieGAF is probably interested in
Hey, I'm looking for general feedback on the latest playable version of Wildfire. Basically I just want to know if you find it fun.

This is a stealth platformer where you can control the elements. It's inspired by immersive sims like Thief and Deus Ex.

This version has same screen, local co-op play. You just need a gamepad plugged in. If you want to turn off co-op, just press ESC and toggle it off in the Options menu.

Also, press F4 to toggle windowed/full screen.

Due to the sale shenanigans, I totally forgot the december voting:
Highly recommended
Hard West
Conflicks
Dr. Langeskov, The Tiger, and The Terribly Cursed Emerald: A Whirlwind Heist

Recommended
The Good Gardener
Infinity Inc.
Blacksea Odyssey
Pictures of a reasonably documented year

Not Recommended
Letter to a friend
Hellmut

Avoid
Pavor Nocturnus

Did you guys post your lists?

Thank you. Foul Play is definitely what I was hoping for.

No problem, their is a brawler coming out sometime called Mother Russia Bleeds that might be worth checking out if you like the genre. It might be the case of style over substance but from early trailers and screens it certainly has a lot of style.

Forgot too. End of December is always hectic and the influx of new games due to the Sale didn't help (didn't hurt either :p)

I'll post mine later today

In the meantime, marvel at what is IMO the best showcase of Rain World's procedural animations that I've seen yet

Ghost Song was awesome - I'm with you, can't wait for the final product.

The Witness I'm mega hyped for - Braid was maybe THE game that turned me on to indies and I still regard it as one of the best out there.

Firewatch as well - maybe because I love the Idle Thumbs guys - looks amazing, sounds like it has a "mature" narrative to it all.

Astroneer looks great as well - which I only saw on here along with a few other games I hadn't seen any/much of before.

What I'm interested in regarding Astroneer is the weather system. I learned about the game after seeing The Martian, so yeah...got strong Martian vibes from this

So is it a builder type game? "Walking sim"? Environmental puzzles? Really sell it to me Baddy

Don't much about it besides what I've read on the site and Twitter, but it's open world/crafting/exploring with deformable terrain, weather, automation, and co-op. There seems to be an industrial element in finding minerals and material to establish a profitable base on your planet

Excellent. So many buzzwords that get me interested there.

So the bad news is that The Last Night isn't getting a Kickstarter

The good news is
It's going fucking awesome! We're moving to London next month, we're funded, the game is looking better than ever.
We're going to make a huge announcement in the upcoming months, until now we'll make progress in the shadows...
So they totally have a publisher. I wonder who it is

You should definitely check out Aces Wild: Manic Brawling Action.
The combat looks flashy but, its pretty easy to get into.

So I played Emily is Away. I've read about it and a common thing on the opinions were how the game "hit too close to home" for most of the people, though it didn't happened to me, likely because I didn't care at all for these IM when I was younger (here the one with the most success was MSN Messenger) and I couldn't relate to the main "character" at all. But even with these personal issues the overall experience was positive because while not a situation that I lived, it's something that you know is real for many and happened to them. Reading the friends profile and having a sneak peek on their lives and their struggles In the end I recommend it.

From the developer's last Kickstarter update:

"Right now Joar is working on what should be the masterpiece of Rain World AI, a knuckle-walking, tool-using creatures as intelligent and capable as the slugcat: the Scavengers."

the animation is beautiful but it seems they've done some great things with the AI as well?
Yeah, the AI is very advanced. That particular creature is supposed to be as intelligent as you, and you're a tool user. But in general, the AI for every species understands itself and other species in the world, has different meters for prey, predator, threats, relationships, etc., and adapts dynamically to what's happening

So for example, yellow lizards are pack hunters that communicate to each other through flashing strips on their bodies. They work together to surround and cut off your escape routes or trap you, and listen to the alpha of their pack.

If a lizard loses sight of you, it can predict where you might end up based on the layout of the environment.

If a lizard is hurt and trying to climb a pole, it'll try a few times before realizing that it can't due to the injury and then find other ways to reach where it wants to go

If a lizard is hunting you and then a vulture swoops down, it's going to freak out and get the hell out of there, because a bigger more immediate threat is around.

Or if a lizard of the same species crawls in and tries to start hunting you, the two lizards might get into fight over it, until one emerges dominant

FakeSimplisticIndianhare.gif

Every species interacts reacts dynamically with every other species and with the individual members of its species.
