SEGA 3D Classics Collection hitting retail in North America (April 26th, $29.99)

Great news. Should come to Europe as well.

Lots of Gaffers have a noticeable home console, especially Playstation bias. This is sort of the opposite what you would wish for if you are PS4 only. Also doesn't help that Sega barely advertises the Sega Classics, makes it easier for people to miss out on the greatness.

But hey, not all are disappointed. Some know the greatness^^

I'll freely admit to having an overwhelming handheld bias, myself.

And the 3D Classics line prompted me to buy a Japanese 3DS. I already had a US one at the time, but the minute Sega announced Space Harrier and Super Hang On, arcade perfect and beyond, in a format I can take on the go, I bought a second 3DS.

Hell, I even went nuts over the Sega Arcade Gallery for GBA at the time, and those ports were very far from "arcade perfect".

That's amazing. It doesn't have After-Burner, Super Hang-on, Space Harrier, Streets of Rage, etc. which are the ones that really interest me in the 3D Classics line. If I were to buy them I'd want them to be separate and immediately accessible from the Home menu; as if I bought them one by one.

... I may have to buy them one by one. :p My wallet will cry though.

Better or worse than GBA's port of Sonic 1?

Oh, better by far. Except for After Burner, the ports were quite playable and enjoyable for 2002.

Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis for GBA was one of the worst ports for a system that, resolution aside, should have been able to accommodate a Genesis port in a playable fashion.

A lot of us wanted this compilation to get localised and the 3D Classics deserve more sales. 3D Classics are the best rehashes out there

I hope it's successful, it's just not for me. I lived through the era, and experienced the many collections afterwards. Classics for sure, but I was hoping for something new, or revisiting stuff that never gets revisited.

hold me back fellas

I have since read your earlier posts(and other responses to my own post). Salient points to be sure, but I remain as I said "Extremely disappointed by this." I'm not angry or saying Sega sucks or anything like that(if that Valkyria Chronicles PS4 remaster comes to the States I'll actually be super happy with Sega). But this product? Yep, disappointed as heck. IIRC, most or all of these 3D releases are already on 3DS for $5-6 a pop. So at most this is saving you $12 if you really want want all of the games in the collection(and I for one do not, especially Altered Beast). I could care less about 3D, and while I own a 3DS XL, would much prefer to play these games on console as originally intended. Meanwhile...

-Rare Replay is on next gen consoles for $30 with many more games and solid quality(I guess aside from Nuts N Bolts which has some playability issues), and even includes extras like developer videos etc.
-As mentioned before, the Sega Collection had 40 games that were almost all perfectly playable on consoles.
-Sonic 3 and Knuckles remains only playable on Wii last gen when it comes to consoles(and only through eshop shenanigans).

There a lot of things Sega could have announced here that would have made me quite happy. Hell, I would have settled for a PS2 classic of Sonic Mega Collection on PS4. As it is, I remain disappointed and will continue to be. But hey, I'll be quite excited if the Valkyria Chronicles PS4 remaster does show up in the USA at least.

Fair enough. Thanks for elaborating. I obviously don't share the same sentiments but I respect your opinions. And we are both in total agreement in wanting Valkyria Chronicles on PS4!

I'd be great if people disappointed about this announcement posted in the announcement thread since that's they point where they began their fevered dreams about what would be revealed today.

It'd help this thread stay a bit more on topic.

Didn't SEGA release a combo pack that contained the 3D Classic Games from both volumes? If so, why didn't they go-ahead and localize that instead?

Ha! I knew it!

Outside of sonic which I love and altered beast which is just awful i haven't played any of these games I don't think. Is there anything here that is a can't miss game?

They also did the Wii Genesis and SMS VC ports for the record, plus the Game Gear ports for 3DS VC, if we're talking about the SEGA family.

Really? I didn't know that.

If that's the case, then why didn't Sega use those versions for Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for PS3 & Xbox 360 instead of hiring Digital Eclipse/Backbone Entertainment to do the ports?

You gotta respect the effort put into these remasters though, I can't put an actual figure to the development time but it takes the team months to output individual titles. There are some really interesting interviews for most of the 3D classics, here's one for Sonic 2: http://blogs.sega.com/2015/10/06/3d-sonic-the-hedgehog-2-included-in-the-sega-3d-classics/

There may not be dozens of titles in this compilation but they're all stunningly and respectfully remastered with a truly fantastic 3D effect, even if you don't care for 3D. A lot of people in this thread don't even seem to be aware that these games exist so a retail release to get the word out seems more than fair. The games deserve more respect as do the developers behind them.

Ha! I knew it!

Good point, I guess it wouldn't seem compelling at a full retail price and they'd rather release two individual budget titles? It's hard to give away all those games at $30 when they come at $5.99 each on the eshop. I quite want this 1+2 compilation though.

Like Power Drift and Puyo Puyo 2?

Saturn games like Shining the Holy Ark and Panzer Dragoon Zwei. Or if they really want my head to explode an arcade compilation of their racing titles. Golden Axe Death Adders Revenge or the arcade Shadow Dancer.

There's a gold mine there of games that sit untouched. But I'll leave it at that. Not everyone has had the chance to experience what I have, so it's good they get another chance.

I assume people disappointed by this never played the Sega 3D Classics. They are incredible, and the gaming equivalent to a "Criterion Collection" release.

This. Plus the 3D Classics line are all done by M2 so the care which goes into the emulation is absolutely superb and second to none.

Yes, Sega was tone deaf on the 'big announcement for classic fans' but this collection is a must own for folks who love Sega arcade games and haven't checked out 3D Classics on the eShop yet. The fact this compilation is getting localized is a very good thing, it should have happened much sooner.

Can't say I gots any love for the first Sonic game or Altered Beast. An four of the others are shooters which have never really been a thing with me.

Wasn't Mean Bean Machine just a Puyo pallete swap? The AI in that got real cheap real fast so I dunno if I'd enjoy Puyo proper unless its got some standard unlimited / no vs. AI mode. Dunno about Power Drift either. Aside from Mario Kart pre-32bit racing games had never really stuck me as fun or good feeling. What's Maze Runner like?

What might the list of games reveal about the port quality?

To answer your question, I own all but 1 of the 3DS Classics, as well as the Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection. There is absolutely no question as to which ports are superior.

yeah, really sad how much this point has to be stressed

No After Burner and OutRun?

I hope the European version will combine Volume 1+2.

next volume should have those, and yeah, that'd be cool to see too! i hope you guys get that, as well as yakuza 0

You'll have to settle for PSO2.

In Japanese

this really is the most puzzling thing on sega's part these days, feels like so much $ left on the table honestly

hold me back fellas

*sigh* right there with you man

RIP devotion to craftsmanship.

seriously, people crying for larger number of rehashed sub-par ports vs the finest remake work ive seen since...Guardian Heroes HD?

Well you dunce, safe to say most was expecting something bigger than a damn 3ds game

"most" had unrealistic expectations and/or don't know the quality of these works right here...their loss, they'll still be around when folks realize how great this is later

I think people exaggerate the quality of that compilation, there are some issues here and there but overall it wasn't bad. The only port that was truly unplayable was Space Harrier, I don't know how you get sound that bad.

i'll give you that...was quite a step up from the Dreamcast Smash Pack too, haha

This thread smh. M2 is too good for this world.

pretty much this

#teamAlteredBeast

i respect your willingness to ride for this title, even if it's not on my list, haha

We don't even know if volume 2 is getting released and if the compilation gets released it will likely be $50 vs the $30 price tag of this. It's up to you but I think Sega deserves the support for these games.

This is Volume 2. What we aren't getting (yet, at least) is Volume 1.

It sounds like you might be better off selecting the games you really want and prefer individually from the eShop. Also, Mean Bean Machine was based/swapped from the first Puyo Puyo game, not Puyo Puyo 2.

My top 3 most wanted games for this thing, assuming it continues, are still Death Adder, Shadow Dancer, and Sonic 3+K. The first two, in particular, would be amazing. It just ain't right that they've never had a home release.

And given how above and beyond M2 tends to go for the arcade games, I can scarcely imagine how cool either of those would be.

I was born with Sega in my veins. This collection is incredibly exciting to me and is a day 1 purchase for sure. How can anyone be disappointed in Puyo Puyo 2? This is amazing.

Most? You're getting four never released games out of nine.

And your math is way off. If these are $6 each, 6X9 = $54.

So even if you already have 3 or 4 of the games and interest in the others, it's a good deal.

I'll admit, I was hoping for a different announcement haha, but this is pretty cool too.

I wouldn't even think of getting Vol.2 released over here since this ones gonna bomb if only because the box has Sega on it >_<

Prolly got this one over the JP Vol.1 since that one didn't have a Sonic game in it.

I don't buy download games so its this or nothing for me. Plus I like ta show support for download games coming to retail if possible.

Puyo Puyo's been done to death. Baku Baku Animal needs a little love!

haha, no.
Sega Genesis Collection on PS2/PSP was an even worse job than their PS3/360 compilation. Sometimes the game you were playing would just soft reset. No rhyme or reason, just doing a level, then bam, Sega logo and title screen credits. I was willing to write that off as a minor thing at first, but the exact same shit happened to me in the PS3/360 Collection too, in the middle of a Shinibi III run.

The backbone collections are pretty shitty.

Is it possible to download Puyo Puyo on its own? I own the ones I was interested in, and don't feel like double dipping and buying a bunch of games I'm not going to play.

No idea. My only guess is that SEGA went with Backbone because of costs.

The Genesis Wii VC is incredible too. Perfect ports with 240p over Wii component looks amazing on a CRT. The Sonic games support lockon too.

You're correct. I was mistaken and thought it was 7 games and not 9 in the collection for some reason. So yeah, not a bad deal, but still not equivalent to Rare Replay. Also, 5 is more than 4, so "most" still holds.

And to the other earlier reply: I will admit that from the articles on these 3D remaster, a lot of love went into the ports. Still don't care about the 3D and would honestly prefer more games on a console even if they were ROMs.

Could be a better package than just straight localizing the second retail collection, but damn I'm excited for this and glad Sega of America's taking a risk with a physical release. I'll probably double-dip, using my current eShop wallet and then getting a box copy for a friend.

We really ought to get psyched for more translated SEGA 3D Classics interviews with M2, since those are just amazing.

an unlocalised Puyo Puyo (not the one people actually want
I see way more discussion revolving around Tsu vs. the other Compile-developed games.

It's not about the 3D for me either. These games, even outside of the 3D, are actually improved over the originals. Sometimes, there's new modes that dramatically change the way the game is played. Other times, like with Outrun, they've added in a 60fps mode that makes the game even smoother than the arcade original. There's a lot of random, cool stuff they've done that makes these ports really fantastic efforts. It's not just the 3D.

I'm kinda pissed that this physical release gets exclusives along with stuff I've already bought.

If they haven't put the two Master System games up for download on the JP eShop I wouldn't hold my breath, but you never know! It'd be a nice loyalty thing to put them on the eShop along with Power Drift and Puyo Puyo.
