The Tomorrow Children Beta Announced

There's no need for it, just unload it into the loading area where it's automatically loaded onto the train when it departs. If you intend to travel back just carry it on you.

Yeah the town I was in today it wasn't loading, manual loading it was.

My roundup of how things went down for me.

Played the whole session, didn't experience any connection issues and I did back out of the game a few times trying to get Spotify to work (it didn't want to) but had no problems reconnecting.

Started in a relatively busy town. Having been told to go to the ministry of work immediately I started looking for it, and looking for it...and looking for it. Thought I was going crazy, I assumed you had to do it as some sort of initiation but it wasn't there. The town didn't have one (presumably destroyed). So i built one, puzzle had me puzzled for a good while.

Went to ministry of work, found it to be pointless as I had done very little work so I went out mining.

Chose a mining spot, started chipping away. Was assaulted by a bee, killed it evenly with my pickaxe, then another came along. Pickaxe broke and I was killed.

Went back to the town to find out how I get a new one, no clues as to how I actually do this. Finally work out I need a union shop but can't build one because of lack of wood. Bumble about for a while waiting for the wood store to build, it keeps getting depleted plus I can't hog the workbench.

Still can't build my house either even though the resident count had gone up by 8, I had been trying intermittently with no luck.

Finally decide to visit another town, so I visit one where a friend is. Buy a pickaxe, get the black market catalogue and try to go back to my original town. I can't. Couldnt see any options for it.

So I choose a new town to make my home, one with relatively low resident count. Apon entering I try to build my house but the resident number was full, make the town hall bigger. No town hall in sight...

So I give up with that and go mining/farming. The current island available has an abundance of trees and food. I get a chainsaw and start chopping for what seems like forever. Gather a shit load, go back to the town with 10 mins left of the session. Still can't build a home and can't build a town hall because the town needed 10 residents. Session ended with me confused and still a nomad. Enjoyed it though :)

lol, slowly but surely order forms from the chaos.

Yeah I tried a few towns and could never set up my residence either. Oh well.

Is there a reason why the non-communist items are THAT much better? I doesn't feel like it's much harder to accumulate the green currency.

If they are using a jetpack or the hovercars they are always visible. However we might allow you to track them conveniently in the future. (not permanently visible but more visible than they are now, we'll have a think about this after we launch)

Great to hear! It would do a lot to make you feel more like a part of a society and team if you can see your comrades more consistently when you work and interact in the world.

I'm sorry that I'm coming of so critical, but I'm really loving the game overall but I feel things like that and some other small issues I have are things that shouldn't hinder my enjoyment of the game like they do at the moment.

When are we getting a release date by the way?

The game is definitely beautiful and cool aesthetically. But these screens really highlight how much of the game is hidden because of the DOF and vignette effect. Objects that aren't even 5 meters away from the character are completely blurred out. It seems like only what's in the middle of all images is in focus, even the bottom of your own character is hidden in the blur! I know I'm probably tiring posters and the good people at Q-Games about this subject already, but it's mindbogglingly unnecessary, a game like this shouldn't cause eye strain.

I don't mind the vignette effect (though I could do w/o the small black bars even though they are not noticeable during gameplay), it's barely there depending on the time of the day etc:

I wonder if the blur of the top&bottom of the screen is actually necessary to pull of these awesome aesthetics? The tilt-shit camera effect is essentially the same thing.

The more I look at these screens, the more I think the "DOF" blur is just a static blur lens or something and that covers the bottom, sides and top of the image....

Maybe there can be a civil union system where you purchase a marriage license from one of the shops and bind yourself to a friend. This way you can always see each other and have a shared inventory and shared everything. When your civil partner starts mining rocks and you are just standing around you can pop into other people's worlds alongside them. And there can be weddings!

Haha, a civil union between two young girls... not sure where that's leading!

We have quite a few ideas for communication between players that you'll hear more about as we release the game.

Maybe we can come up with some sort of sufficiently sci-fi "cohesion matrix stabilization binding" or something lol

Going into The Tomorrow Children blindly is indeed overwhelming, as someone else put it. Town was swarmed by bees, power was down, mechazilla approaching, unable to fire the turret due to no ammo, not knowing how to make new tools, ... It was hectic.

Oddly entrancing being a worker 'slave' once the heat died down though; really cool atmosphere (plus fitting ambient soundtrack) and with the citiz- comrades co-operating out of necessity, the game gives you a more immediate sense of belonging and more inviting exploration (due to the eye-catching, peculiar designs of the islands) than the likes of Minecraft in my eyes. Kept OCD'ing on trying to find out how to expand the size of my backpack since neither Strength nor the Black Market license did the trick, but that's hardly the game's fault.

Didn't have any connection issues either and I was fortunate enough to be dropped into a medium-sized active population early into a city's lifecycle, so it wasn't difficult for me to keep track of anyone who wanted to excavate a new or existing site.

Yea, the town I was in had a ton of low food messages, I went out to get some and saw everyone chainsawing the trees, was like noooooooooo!

It's times like that I really wish I could take on an commissar role and make them pay for not for working for the great of all and our glorious leader.

Freeman Dollars appear at random. Espionage activity from the West...

really? that's kinda stupid
there should be a more consistent way to earn money, especially since that's the only way to buy licenses?
black market also uses money and there's a LOT of things to buy over there

This time I have a mission, make my own apple farm.

Shame we reach maximum unit or something I can't plant more.

Not sure how sat the fruit grows but when you chainsaw it down it drops all the fruit. I assume you can grow fruit in town but the trees never last.

I don't mind people sawing the trees outside of town. It seems that the map frequently changes enough that you will always find yoursel in a new island with trees. You just have to harvest the fruits first before cutting them.

Someone planted a sapling inside my town for food purposes (I assume). I'd be pissed off if someone cut that.

I don't know about text chat either. I thought the appeal of the game was working with a community with very limited ways of communicating. It made gathering resources in the game a bit more dynamic since you constantly had to switch tasks according to what you think the town needs. Having someone blast out instructions might streamline things too much, I believe.

We have no plans for text chat, but we always take inspiration from Dark Souls for communication methods as well.. that game is so awesome. :)

Feel free to add to OP!

a duck’s guide to wading through tomorrow

YOU

You are a Projection Clone, a lifeform created to brave the harsh world of the Void to collect resources, rescue and defend humanity, and rebuild civilization. While more hardy than a regular human, you will take damage from excessive heat, explosions, and harsh impacts like falls and physical attacks. Furthermore the unique energy that keeps your form together, “Phase Cohesion,” can be disrupted by prolonged exposure to darkness. Exercise caution when working at night and in the depths of islands!

YOUR ABILITIES

All Projection Clones are created with the same basic abilities, but upon laboring sufficiently can earn level increases and point to allocate toward one of their parameters. Tuning is permanent, so choose wisely for the role you wish to play in society!

Dexterity: Affects work speed and critical hit rate
Fortitude: Affects max Phase Cohesion energy
Might: Affects weapon attack power
Patriotism: Affects Toil to Coupon conversion rate
Agility: Affects movement speed and power generation
Strength: Affects throw and kick power, allows you to carry more resources*
*10 points to carry one additional resource

TOWNS

Depending on the efforts of your comrades, the state of a town when you arrive may vary greatly, but the People’s Workbench is an indelible and extremely important part of every town. Take it upon yourself to create what is lacking! Some of the most important structures are as follows:

Treadmill Generator: Comrades use their legs to generate power for the town. Also a good way for new comrades to earn toil!
Ministry of Labor: Distributes Coupons in exchange for Toil earned.
Union Shop: Sells the three main tools needed to collect resources.
Domicile: Needed to house rescued Matryoshka People.
Police Booth: Needed to craft Anti-Izverg Turrets.
Town Hall: Adds items to the People’s Workbench and increases the limit of Residences that can be built.

As a town expands and the population increases, a number of improvements will become available. Be diligent!

RESOURCES

There are five core resources necessary for expanding and maintaining towns; food, wood, coal, metal, and crystal. These have a variety of uses, and balancing these is essential to survival.

Food: Grows on trees, and is necessary to keep citizens fed. Comrades can craft saplings to plant in town in order to keep a food source near, but…
Wood: Trees grow on certain islands, and saplings will also mature into trees. Wood is needed for building certain structures, and for repairing damaged structures.
Coal: Deposits are found on certain islands. Coal is used in crafting certain items, and to recharge Hover Cars.
Metal: Deposits are found on certain islands. Metal is used in crafting certain items, and to improve the Town Hall.
Crystals: Obtained by defeating Izverg. Small and mid-size Izverg will drop 1, 2, or 3 crystals when defeated, and large Izverg have crystal deposits inside their remains. Stationary Izverg will turn into crystal when defeated. Crystals are used in crafting items, and can be used to stabilize a portion of the Void by activating them with the Square button.

Additionally, facilities in town require electric power to operate. This power can be generated using the Treadmill Generator, and the town’s total capacity increases as the number of facilities increases.

TOIL

Nearly every beneficial action you take (collecting resources, repairing structures, defeating Izverg, etc.) will earn you Toil, a numerical calculation of your contribution to society. When this Toil reaches certain limits, your level will increase enabling you to strengthen yourself. Furthermore, when you visit the Ministry of Labor this Toil will be calculated and you will receive coupons based on your work. The exchange rate can be improved in a number of ways, such as increasing your Patriotism parameter or gaining Perks by drinking VoidKa.

COMBAT

Periodically, large beasts will appear from the Void. The Izverg, as they are known, are generally unconcerned with Projection Clones, but will attack and destroy any towns or structures they come into contact with. As such, comrades will need to repel Izverg if they approach using Anti-Izverg Turrets, rocket launchers, and so on. Additionally, while large Izverg that are not headed toward structures can be ignored, Izverg are the only source of crystals so occasionally comrades will need to attack aggressively to obtain crystals. Smaller Izverg however will attack nearby Projection Clones, but are much weaker and can be easily dispatched with shotguns or even work tools. Finally, the corpse of the largest Izverg type will remain and can be excavated for crystals, tools, and Matryoshka Dolls.

HUMANITY

While nearly the whole of humanity was melded together in the Void incident, several humans escaped complete absorption into the collective consciousness in the form of Matryoshka Dolls. These dolls can be revived in town using the Rescue Apparatus, and once restored to humanity the citizens of the town must be kept fed and housed, and the town’s power must be kept up or they will begin to leave. There are also population requirements for certain Workbench items. Restore our nation!

GENERAL ADVICE
-Requests (missions) can be received from police officers, citizens, and so on. Completing these missions will earn rewards like Toil and tools, and most importantly Memorial Medals. These Medals can be used in VoidKa Vending Machines to earn permanent Perks.

-Cooperation is key! Assist your comrades in their labors for more Toil and to work more quickly, and help revive those who have succumbed to the Void.

-It is up to you to remain loyal to one town or to wander the Void! Act as necessary to progress!

-Items in your inventory can be dropped with L1. Use this to give a comrade an item you no longer need!

-Monuments show the achievements of the town as a whole. Work toward earning them to increase the amount of structures you can have in town!

-There are rumors of a Black Market dealing in contraband from another nation. Reports have been received of the kiosk clerk holding a mysterious pamphlet and making clandestine transceiver calls...

I'm absolutely amazed by the game.3 hours went so fast.I can't wait to play another 3 hours tomorrow.

The feedback i have from the game reminds me the first time i played minecraft with friends and i was amazed.

I like all of this game and i can't wait to the release of the final game.I hope this sunday open the servers more hours please.

It's really hard to understand the game from the beginning, the learning curve is tough but when you learn how to play and how the game works is amazing.A truly collaborative game with the objective of build your town with the help of the other people.

Amazing. My congratulations for the developer team for make an interesting and original game.

there should be a clearer guide in the beginning, to tell the new players to not just waste resources on random buildings, or even better, straight up tell them to just build domiciles to increase max population so they can build town hall and then progress

maybe have a guide that shows the importance of food and wood as well, those 2 things are the most essential in a town but they're the rarest unless you have a dedicated farm, so maybe the guide should talk about building a farm for the town as well

many people don't realize the apples are food to be deposited, they just eat it even though they're not in any danger

also, what is mandate? my town on had extra buildings that can't actually be built, it says mandate limit over or something like that
