At almost 200 hours and on my 3rd play through, I have to agree. The engine is fine. The bugs and the jank isn't that bad, especially after the most recent patch. (at least on the pc, the port frame rate on consoles is kinda unforgivable)

The heart of the issue is the series needed something new. The whole vaults, 1950s future retro culture, and society being just rusty shacks was over played. The same groups are battling for power as they were in 3. In New Vegas, while I hated the tacky unimaginative pop culture humor, at least they made different groups to interact with. In 4, there was no surprise. I pretty much knew exactly how each faction would play out if I sided with them.
 
Back to the controller discussion. I would still be using my XB1 controller if the D-pad didn't start being faulty after heavy use. And that was a new Halo one.

Using the DS4 right now and I am still getting used to it here and there but it's fine.

How much fight money do you usually get if you win a round?

You get it per fight, not per round in a fight (I am sure that's what you meant though.) I remember it being around a couple hundred.

Like the reviewers who had nothing but glowing endorsements of the game but forgot to cover most of this because "it's to be expected from a Bethesda game", why do they get a free card?!

Thing is, most game critics are far more consumers than actual critics.

They just play games and recommend them, they're huge fans of IP's and devs and fall victim to the same fanboy complex. Often even worse, because they get their games for free, get special treatment on conventions and exclusive information, which usually ends up in critics thinking that the gamedevs are somehow their friends when the reality is quite the opposite. The critic and the artist are natural enemys in their profession.

What we need is critics that stand up and do what their name implies, we need them to critizise.

We need someone that stands up and yells, and calls bullshit out without empathy for the poor gamedevs and pitty fanboys feelings.

What we need is a Marcel Reich Ranicki of videogames.

Personally I don't mind the engine, I'm fine with every iteration of Gamebryo as long as it doesn't crash. What I do mind though is writing, consistency and game design. How they butchered their game towards the end of the main quest is something I will never understand. It's up there with ME3 ending as one of the worst ways I have ever seen any media whether it's TV, movies or games, to end.

I'm not arguing that GT shouldn't have shut down. Yeah, the business was going in a different direction, the writing was on the wall for them for some time now.

What i'm saying is that the manner in which it went down, with no notice so that people could look for work or start adjusting their finances and make accommodations and such, that's tough as hell regardless of your line of work or the nature of the business youre involved in.

To sit here and crap on them given the way these events played out comes off as incredibly cold and lacking of empathy for people who are now completely out of work through no fault of their own

Yea, honestly I always figured Gametrailers would be shut down sooner rather than later but damn they got done dirty, just a "oh btw, this is your last day on the job". should have told them back in January, its not like they just decided to shut them down now, they knew they'd be doing it. Lucky for Elise she got a new job before it got shut down.
 
I might get one of those SF fight pads, looks swell for indie games.

I still have my Xbox 360 fighting pads but idk, the red one looks cool and it would work on PS4...

Paradox Reveals a Flurry of Content for Cities: Skylines Snowfall

Free Features Coming to All Players of Cities: Skylines; First Live Gameplay Stream Tomorrow

Paradox Interactive, a “raining champion” publisher of games, today revealed several details about “Snowfall,” the forthcoming expansion to Cities: Skylines from Colossal Order. Snowfall, which will be released on February 18th, 2016 for Windows, Mac, and Linux PCs, will add several new gameplay features to the award-winning city-building game, including several new mechanics revolving around the expansion’s titular weather phenomenon.

To show off these new features first-hand, Paradox will stream the game live on their Twitch channel on Wednesday, February 10th, at 1700 CET (8:00 a.m. Pacific Time). To view the live stream, watch Paradox’s Twitch channel at http://www.twitch.tv/paradoxinteractive on Wednesday.

In addition, Paradox has also detailed the features that will be added to Cities: Skylines for all players in a free patch on February 18, whether the weather-oriented expansion is purchased or not. All players will see the following additions:

  • Rain and fog-based cosmetic weather for existing maps outside the new “Winter” themed maps
  • A new Theme Editor for map modding, allowing players to create new Map Themes ranging from different terrain styles to incredible alien worlds; here is one such incredible alien world

Well I meant as a generic controller. I am trying to get back to being used to a stick and I have a fighting commander 4.
Meant that I went for it :D
I'll probably stick with the good ol' Xbox 360 controller for a couple more years when it comes to games that isn't fighting games or 2d platformers.

Would you guys recommend the Van Helsing games for someone who looooves Diablo? And, if so, which one should I go with?

Speaking as a fellow loooooover of Diablo (still need to play D3 tho), I'm going to say no.

Granted, I've only played the first Van Helsing, but it didn't anything for me.

-Each location is too samey. There are schools of monsters, a handful of bosses, and a couple elites. They all just stand around in each map waiting for a vampire hunter to kill them.
- (Mostly optional) Tower Defense levels. Just a generally bad idea.
- The battle mechanics are a little too off. I've run into moments where I'd take damage even when I'm well away from an enemy's attack.

The loot is okay and some of the skills are neat, but the whole experience was rather dull.
The highlight of the game is the arguments Helsing would have with his ghostly companion.

I enjoyed the first one well enough, though I do remember having some performance issues.
I was actually thinking about replaying it before giving the sequel another go since I couldn't stick with that one the first time.

How is Paradox doing financially?
They have been hitting it out of ballpark lately (CK2, Cities, PoE), but since all of these are PC exclusives they can't be bringing them more money than a single AA console release, right?

Splendid considering they just acquired White Wolf from CCP.
 
I read the Edge preview of Vive and Rift. Similar to Eurogamer's comparison. Main take away was that Vive's screen is broader, and brighter, but it's heavier and less comfortable compared to the Rift*. There is time to make changes, but any weight savings might be negated by the time HTC adds built in audio.

I have put aside money for one of these devices but I really need to think about a bottom line figure, how much this is going to cost me + a new graphics card. It is creeping up so quick.

Hear me out before you all start pointing your fingers and laughing because as of the last beta you got what? 10 FightMonies per win? Now we know you should get enough if you go through the arcade and challenge modes to net you 1 character with change left over but honestly who here has actually tried to go through and beat arcade mode in vanilla SFIV and not grown tired or come unstuck on an unfamiliar character(s) challenges at some point. Plus if that figure is true and the amounts in the beta are even 10% of the final game that's one LoL like grind to unlock the rest of the other 5 DLC characters, even over 6 months.

So by ponying up £25 (or less if some site has a deal on) you get all 6 first wave DLC characters, swap costumes and get to keep all that FightMonies to spend on wave 2's DLC cast. And probably before they're even announced to the world you might have a stockpile to make even Scrooge McDuck green with envy.

Play Path of Exile instead, much better, longer and free game.

I have to totally agree. Van Helsing 1 was kinda "meh" and the sequel was pretty terrible. Never played the third so I don't know if it picked back up. The loot was pretty much identical and the skill tree was interesting but ultimately flawed.

Meanwhile Path of Exile has had years of regular content updates, an interesting loot/in-game economy system, vastly different play styles between character types, lots of varied places to explore, and best of all it's free. It even does free-to-play right, since the only things you pay money for are cosmetic unlocks or "premium stash tabs" that let you color code stuff.

I recommend Path of Exile to anyone that loooooves Diablo.

Just wait till both are out. I will buy a pascal and skylake pc now (actually already bought anything else besides the mobo, cpu and gpu) and I will see which device is the better one.

Right now on GAF you can already see the same shitty console-warrior shit with the headsets. Some preordered Oculus and defend that till the death (e.g. about roomscale, which Vive will certainly is the better solution).

I just need to buy Ibuki when she rolls out.
And I guess it would help if I bought the game as well before that.

I might just decide to finish Oxenfree today. I'm starting to get back on my legs, after that horrible break up. I'm also enjoying my mobile gaming a lot these days when I go to bed.

Check out Grim Dawn. I know it's still in early access but it's content complete and Version 1.0 should be within a week or two.

Do the baddies in other arpgs do anything different? Playing with their Pogs maybe?
 
Dying Light's Enhanced Edition includes a few things that aren't present in the Ultimate Edition. Complain about it here.
Such a shame I can't even access Dying Light's storepage from Germany. Would have liked to wishlist and check its page every now and then.
Time to understand what all the hype is about.

I'm installing The Witcher: Enhanced Edition
These are my impressions on it.
It is a very solid RPG with an extraordinary good world filled with great, unique characters who actually feel real. It is definitely the driving force for me. Loved the mature themes, struggles and politics. It's a very interesting world which I absolutely want to learn and change further. Thankfully the next two games are already waiting for me :)

While The Witcher offers some very highs in certain parts, it sadly also has some mediocre parts which only feel that lesser compared to the great things. Combat, especially swordplay feels too passive. Thankfully the signs (magic spells) feel more direct and upon some leveling up therein are very good methods of spicing combat up. Personally ended up using only two signs, Ard and Igni, so I would have appreciated some more diversity in offensive spells but I just settled with what was offered and it still was plenty enjoyable.

Another very important aspect is alchemy. Despite what the game might tell you at the start considering it being not needed at easy difficulty, it absolutely is. Collecting herbs and other substances from carcasses was not too tedious. I still wished there was an option to map a hotkey to quick-loot.
The actual alchemic mixture of potions is a bit to convoluted and not very well displayed. Having the ability to disassemble herbs etc. into base alchemic ingredients would have been much better at helping better grasp potion mixing. There are only a handful of base ingredients but a lot more herbs etc.

The character leveling system is nicely split into four character stats, spells and swords. As much as I like having reign over detailed upgrade paths, I still believe splitting sword upgrades into six (!) separate groups was a bad decision. Having only two, Steel & Silver would have been better as it makes little sense having three paths for each stance (strong, fast, group) to divert scarce upgrade points into. In combat you mostly have to use each stance at various points of battle. Very often does combat start with a small group consisting of enemy types. Thus using group stance helps clear multiple enemies quickly leaving 1-2. And for those you select the appropriate other stance.

It is very clear that there are some very talented devs at CDPR which can absolutely create great RPG worlds where you quickly get invested in. Being their first game and taking the scope and various at times intricate mechanics into consideration, I can overlook reoccurring buildings, assets, dull animations and transitions. It sure would be appreciated elevating these issues in sequels though.

All in all I am glad that I listened to a friends advice and gave this fairly dated game a try. I am very positive that I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much (and forgiven its faults) after playing the much more popular sequels first.
I can't say that it is a game for everyone and also not that it might be worth the many hours it needs to get going. Getting accustomed to its flow and mechanics takes several hours. It doesn't help that the first levels aren't really that interesting and for me at least the middle became a pain courtesy of ever repeating locations (damn you Vizima!). But for those powering through, a very, oh so very great end third is waiting. Totally made stale sections worth powering through.
There's some real good stuff but also some bad stuff. If you don't have high tolerance for jank and old games, you probably won't have much fun. It does feel old.

One interesting thing to note is that Witcher series didn't start the nice hair trend with Witcher 3. It was already in Witcher 1!
