Out of left-field

Legendary Pictures has set Steven S. DeKnight to direct Pacific Rim 2, the follow-up to Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham’s 2013 epic action-adventure film. The current script was written by Jon Spaihts based on characters created by Beacham and del Toro. Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, del Toro, and Mary Parent are producing and Jillian Share will be executive producer. Universal Pictures will release the film worldwide in 3D.

It's not the director that's going to make this movie, it's the script. Fortunately, Jon Spaihts is a great writer so I'm hopeful.

(Pacific Rim was a guilty pleasure.)

I guess a showrunner is kind of like a director, so hopefully this isn't a mess. I'm not getting my hopes up though.

I'll believe it when I see it. This movie seems like its been in pre-production purgatory in forever and I don;t expect that to change anytime soon.

No movie credits whatsoever, but was an executive producer on Daredevil. Don't know how to feel, but I'm not confident.

pacific rim is del toro's pet project but DeKnight is god tier. heartbreaking for del toro but i think the product will be much more sophisticated and awesome with another director.

del toro is still a producer probably even PGA so seems like del toro fans shouldnt get too upset.

is he a good writer? he's the in thing with studios right now but we've only seen 2 of his movies so far and they've both been absolutely shit.

Well, the problems I had with the first one were mostly about the script, so what really matter is that they have a new writer.
Hmmm, I don't know this Jon Spaihts guy, to the google machine -

WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING GDT?

ON ONE HAND, PACIFIC RIM LIVES!

ON THE OTHER, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN US GDT? ARE YOU DOING SOMETHING WITH KOJIMA? DORMANT HILLOCKS OVER MECHA BATTLES WITH MECHA KAIJU?

I FEEL SO CONFLICTED.

1) I didn't know this was still alive.

2) There is very little Del Toro in that announcement.

On a conceptual level anyone can make a giant robot film, but will any of these people lovingly indulge the same eccentricities Del Toro did.

Bracing myself for it to feel like a fan film.
