It saddens me that the Wii U will never reach its full potential.

I love my Wii U. I love the games for it. I love the amount of support Nintendo gave for it when times were rough for the system. All this talk about the NX (which we really still know nothing about) makes me sad that the fact that the Wii U is widely considered a failure when it had so much potential in terms of gameplay and unique control schemes.

WarioWare would have been an amazing party game utilizing the Wii U gamepad. Imagine passing around the Wii U gamepad around the room for microgames. Imagine the possibilities of asynchronous multiplayer for the microgames. The gyroscope, touch screen, and camera all could have been great for micro games for the system. While it could have been great, I understand that Intelligent Systems was busy with A LOT of games during the span of the Wii U's life and with the resurgence of the Fire Emblem series they have been super busy I assure.

Mario Party series has dropped dramatically in frequency of releases since the gamecube era. And the series needed a good break to come back fresh (and because of change of developers) but Mario Party 10 was not the way to go. Personally for me, the biggest draw from the Mario Party series was screwing your friends over, having a bunch of random interactions on the map, and fun minigames. From what I heard the mini games are decent in Mario Party 10 but the "everyone in one car" bullshit really took a damper on the fun. Last year me and my friends replayed Mario Party 5 on the gamecube and had a blast. We played Mario Party 9 right afterwards and the magic just wasn't there. This is really disappointing because motion controls are great for this type of game and the series is going to have a rough time moving forward without them.

Many people are bummed out by the default control scheme for Star Fox Zero, but Pilotwings would have been perfect for this. Using the gyoscope in the gamepad would have been great for controlling aircraft and honestly this could easily have been a digital only title or a budget release that I doubt would take Nintendo long to develop for.

Mario sports games. I always loved the idea of the Mario sports games because they took very traditional game elements like Tennis and Golf and gave them RPG elements and unrealistic game types. With the Wii U having a much better online infrastructure than the Wii, there could have been great online matches for Super Mario Strikers, Mario Golf, or Mario Baseball. Nintendo could have easily licensed out these series to 3rd party dev because we've seen when Nintendo rushes out a Mario Sports game with Mario Tennis Ultra Smash. These are not the huge money making series like the mainstream Mario games, so I don't see why Nintendo shouldn't farm these title out to other developers so that their resources won't be used up, can have a genre that's almost non existent on Wii U, and have games to fill the void for times when they've had game shortages.

Sin & Punishment sequel & on-rail shooters. The death of motion controls will also be the death of on-rails shooters. The Sin & Punishment sequel was only possible with the re-release of the original on the Wii virtual console shop. And the controls of Sin & Punishment Star Successor worked perfectly for motion controls. The same with games like Dead Space: Extraction and House of the Dead: Overkill. If Nintendo wanted some more mature games a sequel to House of the Dead: Overkill should have been a no brainer. Nintendo is not shy of having a marketing deal with Sega and given how motion controls have practically died from this generation a House of the Dead sequel would have been an exclusive game that only the Wii U could provide.

Sequels to the Operation Rainfall games. We got a sequel to Xenoblade Chronicles, and that's great, well what about Pandora's Tower and The Last Story? Both were critically acclaimed games for the Wii. The developers for The Last Story hasn't developed anything worthwhile since The Last Story was released and Nintendo could have easily scooped them up for a sequel to fill in the gaping hole of RPGs for the Wii U. The developers for Pandora's Tower have been pretty busy but Nintendo could have at least place the foundation for a sequel for this game.

A clear given for a small downloadable title is a Pokemon Snap game. The Wii U's gyroscope would be perfect for this and its a shame that it'll never be utilized. Since I'm talking about Pokemon, a pokemon RPG in the vain of XD would have been great to fill the gap of RPGs as well. The last gen was released in 2013 and that would have gave Nintendo more than enough time to get a developer for a game based off of this gen.

There's a ton of games that Nintendo could have followed up on that were successes on the Wii and could have been great sequels on the Wii U from third party developers: Red Steel 3, No More Heroes 3, Capcom vs Tatsunoko 2, Zack & Wiki 2, Muramasa: The Demon Blade 2, Trauma Center series. All these titles could have been exclusive deals to bring more 3rd party content to the Wii U. And some of these titles like Zack & Wiki and Red Steel could have benefited from the available control schemes for the Wii U.

Let's just assume that Nintendo's next console doesn't involve motion controls and instead goes for a more traditional control scheme. We could be losing out on a lot of great things and It frustrates me that Nintendo didn't look outside of their own development teams for help for software on the Wii U.

tl;dr: The Wii U could have been much better software wise if Nintendo focused on outside devs to help fill out their software gaps instead of doing absolutely nothing.

D&D like game where the master creates the level on the fly on the gamepad while the players battle in beat em up or diablo style

I always saw that as wii's lightsaber game (thank you Go Vacation)

I am a huge Nintendo fan but the WiiU was doomed from the start. Having to use the Wiipad was incredibly dumb especially when it drains battery when it is not even on. I'd love to grab my wiiU pro controller, turn on the system, and play. Instead I got to charge up my WiiU Pad, also grab my pro controller, and etc. Just so annoying.
 
I was hoping the selfie camera would be used more in multiplayer games. Seems like such a fun concept being able to actually see your opponents' faces during combat.

What's weird is I don't care even though I bought one.

I kind of regret I bought it but hey, Zelda is still coming so there's that.

Bought a Wii U on launch day.

I don't think I've ever owned a console that I've played as infrequently or with as long gaps between releases that interest me.

It's basically a device in my home that reminds me when I should dust. I'm glad I own the black model, all 32 gigs of it.

Asymmetrical gameplay. That was made me excited.

I had one amazing co-op session with the metroid game in Nintendo Land.

After that I was waiting for the inevitable full fledged game with similar mechanics.

Terribly slow at EVERYTHING outside of games. Modify settings? Download games and updates? Best be prepared to wait

Lack of Internal storage

Lack of Features and all those little inconveniences (low power USB ports, no voice, cant use gamepad in wii mode etc.... )

And this is just stuff that bothered people who actually bought it

Same. I think WiiU has been fantastic as an end user. Games are great and mostly exclusive. Anyone who didnt give the console a real chance did themselves a major disservice.

Agreed but that said the WiiU will end up a pretty decent library and a few gems that people will continue to play years down the road.

Actually, the developer of the Last Story has busied itself with developing one of the best tactical RPGs on mobile, which is incidentally extremely successful in Japan, and very much appreciated overseas as well.

Incidentally, they're working on a new game in collaboration with Silicon Studio, and considering The Last Story's commercial results, something tells me that it won't be on a Nintendo home console.

The battery life sucks, agreed. however the cable that comes with the charging pad is so damn long and plugs right into the wall. I personally never had an issue with it because I just plugged it in whenever the battery got low and continued what I was doing with it. As far as having to use it for menus and such, never bothered me. It's super convenient to use the touch screen for menus.

I just wanted a few more games...the games I played were good but didn't hold my attention for too long. Everything felt like a checklist of mediocrity.

Got a Mario Kart? Ok good

Smash? Great

Mario? Sorta?

Zelda? Maybe someday

Starfox? Sometime soon-ish but isn't really thrilling me.

Mario Party? Lets not talk about that one...

Metroid? Lol

Outside of Splatoon and Baynoetta, It's just a boring and expected software lineup. The Hardware was nothing worth claiming exclusive software rights over.

I don't think those games are going to be the Wii U's legacy. Instead, we'll have Bayonetta 2, Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze and many more. Those games you mention are unfortunate, but they're not representative of the Wii U overall, just the Wii U in 2H 2015.

I will lament that we didn't get more games utilizing the tablet as a map/item screen.

Seriously though the Wii U has a few great games but that controller does it 0 favors.

Gamepad, name, system price, power, etc. all worked against it.

However, I'm not disappointed with my purchase. It has provided some of the best games I've played this generation, so really, I'm quite happy with it from an end user perspective, and for me, that's all that matters. I actually don't give a damn about 3rd party support unless you're talking exclusive third party games (e.g., Lego City Undercover). Multiplats are a low priority for me, especially if they're already on the strongest console or PC.

Im actually looking forward to the Wii Port to correct my misgivings with poor wiiU decisions

Replays, fragmented DLC, Online woes...

I've been pretty satisfied with the system even though there were a few dry spells here and there.

2014 was a really great year for the system. DKCTF, Mario Kart 8, Bayo 2, and Smash 4 killed it.

That said, can't imagine anyone could last with Wii U as their only system. I assume most Nintendo fans have a 3DS and/or PS4/PC/XB1.
 
I gave mine away to a friends son. Never had the urge to buy another but if I monster hunter 4 was available for it I would be driving to the store as we speak without even finishing this post.

If the NX is a handheld/console hybrid I don't see why everything you mentioned can't be accomplished on the new system as well tbh.

Yep OP, I love the system just like you do.

I could have played the WiiU for many more years. My wish would have been a 1TB storage system and an upgrade of the gamepad. Better and bigger screen, premium materials, better battery life.

It really is a perfect system for my taste, just needed a better flow of games and third party support. Media player too, to play movie maybe.

The WiiU just failed to interest people it's no secret, but I'm proud of having one and a big library of game for it. I'm waiting for Zelda Twilight Princess!

Still buying Wii game to play on it too.
 
Sorry OP, but Nintendo what they could, and the marketplace simply didn't want the system. Why should they have dumped more resources into making niche games for a system that nobody is buying?
 
Anyone who hasn't played Affordable Space Adventures in co-op, by the way, has missed the single best use case for the gamepad and asymmetrical gameplay. I highly, highly recommend it. Those guys used the gamepad better than Nintendo ever did.

I think it was obvious that Nintendo shoved the system out the door. A system that was supposed to support their games for half a decade. That's the depressing thing for me. They could have at least waited until they were actually ready to launch the damn thing.

I would say that the original Wii's gimmick was never delivered on: a hardcore Wiimote game. Outside of Skyward Sword there was nothing.

And now the Wii U's gimmick was never really delivered on. Mario Maker? I guess. A menu..... surely there was more core game potential.
 
I'll definitely give Smash as the best output Nintendo put out for the WiiU...but man...I feel like I own the entire console for that one game.

ZombieU was a good surprise, Beat New Super Mario U.... then i didnt touch it again until smash and its been a smash machine ever since until Mario Maker and a little Mario Kart

Its not the worst but had the hardware been more thoughtfully designed i would have used it a lot more

The last statement in the OP is why I avoid nintendo these days. If you paid attention during the snes-gc era the same problem was going on. The company doesn't care to be inclusive in the process like ms or sony, which should be a red flag to most nintendo consumers yet it's not cause industry politics don't matter to most.

They gimp their systems in this area and their sdks so I will enjoy the company at parties and when used sales come along anything else nope not supporting this generation to generation bs that makes the company more irrelevant. The fact we have another successor after iwata whose abysmal on PR like the company has been for sometime doesn't make me confident either. The company needs to change some of their structure or approach to gaming or getting profit it doesn't keep consumes and drives away devs.

I actually feel the same way about the original Wii even though it was a commercial success. So many cut and pastes of bad ideas, the really good stuff was never copied or never happened at all.

Nintendo didn't figure out the best way to use the WiiU Gamepad until late into the system's lifespan.

Same thing with the original Wii, basically. Nintendo didn't figure out how best to utilize motion controls until near its end - with Skyward Sword.
