Nah, you only need Red and Blue. A friend and I are going to spend the weekend using each other's game to store Pokemon before resetting. That'll get all the starters and all the Eeveelutions.

is this the general consensus? not worth playing the old, original GB games?

The main games to this day are basically glorified remakes of Red/Blue as it is, so I completely agree with Glass Rebel, don't play the Game Boy games except out of nostalgia or a longtime desire to see them stemming from a deep history with the series. The originals are graphically ugly, and basic things like moving Pokemon between boxes will be very slow. You also can't breed Pokemon in the originals. I'd say start with something GBA or newer.

Always get the latest Pokemon. People love to list their fave when asked this, but really, stay where Pokemon is now.

More or less, yes. There's no reason to go that far back to play a Pokémon game and even though some people have their favourites because of the specific region/features, it's generally better to go with a newer entry. I personally didn't enjoy the 3DS entries as much as the DS games tho.

More or less. Pretty much any of the games (aside from maybe Black 2 and White 2) are good games to jump in on. It's typically recommend to start with one of the current games with all the latest and greatest in terms of mechanics, then later, if you're curious, try out some of the older games.

The Gen I games in particular haven't aged very well, and are really more of a historical curiosity at this point.

For some reason, I've been wanting to play some Fire Emblem lately but I can't afford the new one. Out of the two GBA games, which one do you guys think is better and which one is easier/less frustrating?

It's been a while since I played Sacred Stones but unlike Fire Emblem 7 you can grind whenever you want after Chapter 8, which would make it easier and less frustrating by default. There's also an easy setting.

That said, I think 7 is clearly the better game. It's pretty well balanced too and has Hector as the GOAT Lord.

If you're hoping to complete your pokedexes together I'd recommend blue over yellow. Red and blue together can complete a pokedex, but yellow has different exclusive creatures to both red and blue.
Am getting yellow myself, excite! :D

Cool, thanks for the tip. I'll get Blue then. Yellow is tempting for Pikachu following you and the minigame but it's no good if we can't properly complete our Pokedexes. I have a friend who has retained and upgraded his Pokedex since the GBA games and has everything saved in his Pokebank account, pretty crazy that the VC games' data can now be added to Pokebank too, wonder what he'll think of that, ha.

It's worth mentioning that in NA/EU, Red and Blue are in monochrome while Yellow is in color. It's Super GB quality color, but it's color just the same.

EDIT: They're up on the eShop in NA

Yellow was a Game Boy Color "enhanced" game, meaning that the usual four shades of green of a regular GB game were substituted for four other colors when the game was played on a GBC. So yeah, like you said, it's kinda like what the Super GB did except better since the colors were by design and could even change during the game instead of how it usually was on Super GB for regular GB games.

Agreed. Fire Emblem GBA is the better game, and Sacred Stones is easier due to the ability to grind whenever you need some extra levels.

I'd rather replay black or any other game than play X again.

Also, playing the originals you can appreciate the ambition and how they pushed the limitations of technology.

Yeah, it's clearly a GBC "black cart" game. I've always just assumed that during localization they got the idea to colorize the game to promote GBC, and rather than reworking the entire game to fully colorize it ala GS they mimicked the Super GB pallets from Red and Blue. It was pretty obvious to me even when I first played it on GBC since I spent a lot of time playing Red on Super GB.

It's amazing how many people I've seen before that argued that Yellow wasn't a GBC game though, insisting that I was just remembering the GBC's auto-pallet select feature that it used for Red and Blue on bootup (I'm still bitter that they didn't keep the GBC's pallet-select feature for VC.)

Is there a cheap, good fighting game available as digital download? Tekken, SF etc.? My daughter wants to play a "kung fu" game.

I'm just hoping Wii U audience is still active for rest of year. Got 2 big games in the works for summer/fall and at least 1 budget style game for spring.

Street Fighter is. It should be 20, it's been on sale for 8 a few times. The game card is cheap as well, at least in Europe.

I might as well just ask here: Is it normal that my Mario Advance 4 cartridge says "Gameboy Player" on startup?

Thanks BooJoh, I thought I had gotten one of those shady fakes from ebay.

For wii u there's Tekkn tag tournament 2 for $19.99 assuming you have the space for it.
Plays well, has over 40 characters, extra modes, and Nintendo themed costumes for each character.

3ds has a dead of alive game, a tekken 6 lite game, and street fighter 4. I don't know if they're all available on the eshop, but I think street fighter is available on it.

should've said what system you mean.

If you're talking Wii U, just get Street Fighter II Turbo or Super Street Fighter II (flip a coin) on Virtual Console. Cheap and good.

Super Mario Advance 4 was Game Boy Player enhanced, which is why it displays that message. It would admittedly make more sense to only display that when playing it on a Game Boy Player, but that's how they decided to implement it.

Oops, sorry, should have said WiiU. I was hoping for something a bit more 3D/modern. We have OG fighting games on 360, this is for her purple corner.

She's never played Smash Bros, and I think she'll like it - what's the best bargain digital route here?

TTT2 is 20 bucks and is the best 3D fighter on the system.

Injustice is a bit rougher but its usually pretty cheap...also twenty bucks right now but goes on sale pretty frequently.

I think 99,999% of people would appreciate a run button and a Pokemon storage system that's not slow and frustrating waaay more. And being able to forget HMs and use them without going into the menu. And being able to breed Pokemon. And...

The originals are dated and you're much better off playing one of the more modern ones. I personally recommend Black&White or Heart Gold/Soul Silver. X&Y were ok and introduced some neat ideas (wonder trade) but ultimately felt like a step back in terms of story, world design and post game content. Haven't played ORAS because I was never a big fan of gen 3 and no Battle Frontier was a deal breaker for me.

Just beat the adventure mode of DK : Jungle Climber on the Virtual Console, and wow, that game has really been overlooked!

DK : King of Swing was fun but didn't really work, the level design and gameplay being tailored for an arcade experience and the map and saving structure being that of a mascot platformer. Because of that contradiction, the game ended being way too devoid of challenge apart from a few spots, and way too short.

Here, the gameplay is a lot smoother and quicker and the level design and philosophy have been straight ripped from Donkey Kong Country, and it works beautifully. It's exactly like a Donkey Kong Country sequel where the platforming mechanics would have been replaced by the Clu Clu Land evolution of King of Swing - very weird, but very fun! The game is long and challenging, but I only used VC checkpoints on the two last bosses, completely over the top.

Yeah, I figured I should still be good for rest of 2016. Maybe bit in 2017, if NX doesn't launch this year. Will also of course depend on when I can get a NX devkit as well.

Hopefully porting isn't too difficult since BC options have been less than ideal.

Nintendo has always offered great BC, but at a weird cost, both Wii Mode, DS on 3DS, and the GBA Ambassador games are stuck in a weird limbo since they are walled off and require sacrifices to the core system to actually use.

I'm hoping Nintendo Web Framework is NX compatible. I'm sure it will be, else I'll need to learn Unity again. Porting some previous games to it might be neat, depending on the time. Will also depend on what control types there are for it. Both ZaciSa and Drop It are both touch based, so those might be hard to port to controller based only gameplay. But Rocket! could easily be ported (or maybe just moved depending on when it's finished)

I believe this was due to Wii and DS being heavily hacked...but still they are horribly walled off. The NX better be B/C with 3DS and Wii U.
