Stardew Valley's word of mouth sales seem insane

It was about time a game like this made it over to the PC.

Been wanting something like Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon with quality for the longest, and so far the comments about it more than confirm that.

Today was the first time I heard about the game and immediately purchased it. It didn't hurt that the price is really low. Can't wait to try it.

While I'm ecstatic that it's doing well and what that means for the genre...

It makes it that much more painful to see what the actual harvest moon series has become in recent years. The games peaked in quality on the GBA...

Call me a purist but I want the actual creator to get the series back togethor and for Natsume and the Japanese dev to make up.

PC has been missing a game like this for a long long time. This game does everything so well and in a lot of cases better than the bigger budget titles. So good.

Natsume was only ever the publisher. The people who made 64 and FoMT, Victor Inc, were pulled into Marvelous, who now make real Harvest Moon games. Xseed is now the official publisher of the true HM games, as opposed to Natsume, who are making knockoffs because they own the name only.

Not that Stardew won't eventually eclipse the WW figures, but those are just Japanese numbers.

Good point, wish there was a more complete breakdown. I could see WW putting most of them north of 500k, but that's just pulling a number out of the air since I've paid minimal attention to HM after the Gamecube days.

It's a lot better than all of the average Harvest Moon games Natsume have churned out over the last 15 years or so, so it definitely deserves it.

Never underestimate the power of streamers. I had no clue this game existed until I saw it pop up at the top of Twitch viewing numbers. Watched Cohh play it for a little while and loved the art, music and gameplay.

Will buy tonight now that I finally have a little free time to try it out.

Edit: I get a lot of Secret of Mana vibes from the environment and music which is a HUGE plus.

Baaaah, still haven't got around to playing it 'cause of IRL responsibilities. I hear it's good, though, and I can't wait to actually run it.

And also Pokemon.

I really hope an indie dev finally makes a good Pokemon clone. Would love to see how it would be handled by someone who isn't GameFreak, y'know?

Port begging is a bannable offense tho.

It ain't indie, but go for Digimon Cyber Slueth. It's like the most refreshing take on Pokemon that I've played in years.

Lots of streamers have really sold teh game, though. It also helps the the game is actually really, really good and well done.

Of course, streamers will always sell a good game, I just don't agree that there's anything about the game that is particularly suited specifically to streamers. No multiplayer, not particularly funny, while you have freedom to create your farm, it's not like Minecraft level freedom, will take a LONG time to finish, is slow paced, etc.

It depends on the streamer. Dan made it really entertaining to watch because he injected his typical humor into it.

This guy should add DLC that lets you capture and battle weird creatures and take his true form as King of Steam.

I'm not surprised that a game like this is filling a void and performing successfully. Where are the Mario Party clones? Add in online multiplayer and that would be a mega-hit. What about an Animal Crossing clone, or Pokemon, as others have mentioned? They would be an easy sell.

I'm really glad Stardew is doing well. It strikes a perfect balance between no-stress, no-rush, move at your own pace and never take a break, your time is limited, optimize your daily life.

I was following the game's development for quite some time, and I'm pleasantly surprised by how popular it's become. It's lived up to most of my expectations, and the modding community based around the game has already begun to produce great mods that make Stardew Valley's future look even more promising.

Really awesome to hear a 1 man shop getting the success he deserves for doing exactly what he wants, I was wondering what the heck it was when it suddenly popped to the top of twitch streams this week.

He will probably make a bigger profit on his game than a bunch of AAA games this year.

A good Pokemon clone that expands on the formula would be amazing.

Reminds me of the success of Banished, another one person studio that provided something good in an undeserved genre.

Yeah, that's the first comparison I can think of, too.

...I bought that game at release and haven't played more than 90 minutes of it. I only reget not making time to play more of it.

Seems like this game is weirdly bringing out Harvest Moon hate. Maybe I'm just biased because I loved Story of Seasons. Still I'm happy for the developer and will definitely pick it up soon while it's hot.

There's a lot of people who liked the early Harvest Moon games.

Then the Harvest Moon guys stopped making good ones.

Now someone makes a good one again and filled in that niche nicely.

It helps that it's a market that no one has touched on PC and they do it perfectly and even improve upon the 'consolized farming non-simulator' game.

Usually with indie games that imitate other genres/games like this it's that it doesn't have enough content as the original but has much better ideas or executions. Or the execution is a little sloppy but the ideas are so fresh that it keeps you playing.

This is just good and has tons of content and improves a ton of issues Harvest Moon had while borrowing elements from popular games like Animal Crossing and other modern crafting/exploration games.

If I was Nintendo, I'd be trying to get a NX port set up like right now. See how this does in Japan.

Who would've thought a farming sim would do well on Steam ! :p
I hope XSeed/Marvelous are taking notes ;p

Former Marvelous guy said on a podcast recently (after the success of Stardew Valley) that he had lobbied internally to get more of their stuff on Steam, but it never got much traction because he was the only one really pushing for it.

Also mentioned that Valve asked Marvelous to do a Steam version of Harvest Moon, apparently Valve was trying to court Japanese developers to get more Japanese games on Steam. Marvelous wasn't interested in it.

Not sure if I should mention the podcast (not sure if he was allowed to be saying that), but it was a former guest on the 8-4 play podcast.

Bought Stardew Valley after watching a bit of it streamed on Twitch on Friday night. I'm already close 20 hours into it over the weekend, and I just want to play more. It pulls from so many great games that I've loved over the years. A pleasant surprise to be sure.

Oh? That's very interesting information.
If you ever feel like linking the podcast, let me know.

Reminds me of that photo with I believe Inaba of Platinum Games at Valve.

Been playing all week and love it. Was following the game during development and I'm eager to see coop hit.

As someone who's been a huge Harvest Moon junkie since Nintendo Power's preview coverage of the SNES debut, it really brightens my day that so many are loving this.

I hope he can use the funding to figure out Mac/Linux ports and eventually an iOS version.

Also I hope Marvelous or Natsume doesn't get the idea to sue him over any kind of imagined infringement. He beat them at their own game.
