YSO predictions

01. [WIU] Pokken Tournament < 80k (average 65k)
02. [PSV] Digimon World: Next Order < 55k (average 45k)
03. [PS4] Tom Clancy's The Division < 20k
03. [3DS] Pokemon Red / Green / Blue / Yellow < 20k

YSO predictions for Digimon are quite low - if those turn out to be reliable, it was in line with what I was saying about the decrease of the franchise in the second entry as happened on PSP - with the difference that this new game is on par with Cyber Sleuth in terms of production values unlike the second PSP game.

Isn't Next Order just a lot of asset reuse from Cyber Sleuth?

That said, sub 50k would be a poor result for Digimon imo. Like I discussed with you a while ago, I was actually expecting more from this one because it's a 'World' game rather than a 'Story' game.

YSO predictions look normal, I don't know what different was expected.

Pokken will end with <150k LTD and Digimon with <100k.

[3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf [1/1][Nintendo Selects] <ETC> (Nintendo) (¥2.700)
With this, New Leaf is going to easily surpass the Pokémon X/Y LTD even without the digital. And actually, it was already on the way to doing that without the price cut.

Unless if Sun/Moon can bring back the ip to 5M+ (which would be very surprising), the Wii U (Splatoon) and the 3DS (Animal Crossing) are the first Nintendo hardwares where the best selling game in Japan isn't involving Mario or Pokémon (or both with Smash on GC).

Excelt for the fact that the game reuses Cyber Sleuths assets and looks noticeably worse in place.

Plus this game is made by a different studio and isnt a direct CS sequel or a spiritual one.

If Sun / Moon wants to become again a 5m+ million seller from a 4m+ it must offer something different and better this time from X / Y. The userbase is there and it will be a very active year for 3DS.

What I was trying to say is that the new game looks more comparable to Cyber Sleuth in terms of production values than how the second PSP game compared with Digitize. I previously said that this game was going to drop with respect to the first PSV entry, and it seems I was right while other users though the game could at least stay stable.

I feel the biggest issue the game has is that it went after the current children's audience on Vita (I'm guessing trying to attract people who bought Minecraft?) instead of continuing to target people who liked Digimon as children and were now older, which seems to be a more realistic assessment of where the brand's appeal still exists.

Why are you saying that? I don't Next Order much more targeted to children and less to young adults than Cyber Sleuth.

Not in a way so that the game looks much more targeted towards a younger audience. I mean, YSO is predicting a 50% drop off.

Cyber Sleuth's first week was 76k if I'm not mistaken. I think Next Order will be somewhere between 55k-60k. So that's not really a %50 drop off, let's wait and see on Wednesday.

Next Order looks like something built to be appropriate for 7-14 year olds whereas Cyber Sleuth is more racy/sexy/edgy for the ~15-22 audience. The characters are similarly older in Cyber Sleuth as well.

Maybe this comparison will help illustrate:

A certain company who has not publicly revealed their name on the recruitment page is recruiting for a 3D character modeler for the development of a PS4 RPG that blends Sci-Fi with the Wild West.

The specified company is located in Tokyo city, Koto district, Kiba, which just so happens to be where Media Vision is located. Brand new Wild Arms game coming?

I don't think this is really their target audience.

While the designs might be less sexualized (the characters are actually the same age), the game definitely is still targeting older Digimon fans.

The difference is that while Cyber Sleuth was heavily focused around attracting fans of the original anime (complete with the project even begin billed as the 15th anniversary project for the anime series), Next Order is tapping in heavily to nostalgia for Digimon World 1. The original protagonist is returning in a supporting role, the story is a followup to the post-game content from the original Digimon World, and the game's advertising campaign has heavily featured lines like "Welcome Back to Digimon World" and "Was the world waiting for you, or were you waiting for the world?". The trailers have pretty much all been centered around "hey, remember Digimon World 1 on the Playstation, and the old virtual pets from the 90s? Well, we're bringing it back!"

I definitely don't think they're targeting it at kids at all. It's just a case where they're targeting a different subsection of the adult fanbase. Cyber Sleuth was targeted predominantly at fans of the original anime series (10+ million viewers), and was designed as a traditional story driven RPG with designs that roughly fit with the typical sort of teen/young adult focused RPG series. Next Order is targeted largely at fans of the original Digimon World (around 200,000 units sold in Japan I believe), with the story being a sequel to post-game content most people never even saw (the game was famously extremely difficult). On top of that, the game is basically a virtual pet turned into a game, with the player not actually controlling their Digimon in battle. It's a notably more niche product. Cyber Sleuth was the sort of game that could draw in appeal to lapsed Digimon fans or even non-fans looking for a typical RPG to play on their Vita. Next Order, by contrast, is much more targeted at folks who loved Digimon World. It's a very unique and strange game that there aren't really any real other analogues to in modern gaming (or really, any point in gaming history that I can think of). It's definitely more of a niche product, but not one that's targeting kids any more than Cyber Sleuth was.

Speaking personally, I'll say that the biggest draw for me in Cyber Sleuth is that they made a JRPG which felt like a modern game while having a bunch of hooks which seemed like call backs to Digimon Adventure stuff I remember from way back. There's a dark tone to the story and the nature of Digimon, but still presented with an anime filter of sorts where the power of friendship and just trying really hard can lead to success. I'm not much of a Digimon fan outside of Hosoda's original short films and the original Digimon Adventures series, but the game was interesting enough for me to pick up.

Digimon Next Order looks like a PSP/3DS game in comparison though, except with the same Digimon models being reused. While the world looks more open, it also looks super generic and boring, compared to the heavy modern/cyber aesthetics of Cyber Sleuth. The character designs are also much less distinctive.

It just looks so low budget. You can blame the world being more open, but if the scope of the game far exceeds the budget they were given maybe they should have found a way with less compromise.

KuwabaraTheMan explained quite well why Next Order is not necessarily aimed at kids, but the image comparison doesn't tell anything about a difference in demographic - perhaps you though so because the protagonist of Cyber Sleuth is not smiling?

Cyber Sleuth's first week was 76k if I'm not mistaken. I think Next Order will be somewhere between 55k-60k. So that's not really a %50 drop off, let's wait and see on Wednesday.

You're right, I was remembering around 100k debut / 150k LTD. Next Order will likely be in line with Cyber Sleuth anyway.

price-drop will help

I don't think it will help all that much personally. At the end of the day, the 3DS has been cheap since August 2011. It's been extremely successful and had big franchises targeting kids, teenagers and young adults, male and female gamers, core and casual gamers, and otaku. It's had several models, colors and special editions. I don't think there's too many people who've been waiting for another price cut, especially considering the 2011 one was even steeper than in the rest of the world and it's easier to convince Japanese people that a handheld is worth that price than Westerners.

Best chance would be Minecraft 3D.

Lol. I knew they'd skimped a bit based on the gameplay vids I'd seen, but that's quite something.

Yeah, just regular reposition. They said something for Gundam Breaker, and some other games.

Ok, I thought maybe there was a special promotion or something.

***

About 3DS price, I'm with Chris on this one. There's a reason Nintendo discontinued the Nintendo 3DS XL months ago, but still has not one, but 5 3DS colours still in production.

Actually, the OG 3DS might well be part of the reason the New 3DS didn't sell as well as you'd expect. Users who wanted the premium model bought a New 3DS XL (and 3DS XL sales were hit hard when it came out), but those looking for an affordable model went with the significantly cheaper OG 3DS.

Looking at price: New 3DS XL is only 800 Yen more expensive than 3DS XL. But New 3DS is 1 800 Yen more expensive than an OG 3DS (and that's not counting the retailer discounts, as you can get one for much cheaper than the MSRP).

A cheaper model (2DS) or a price cut would be a good move for Nintendo this year. No, it won't make the 3DS sell over 100k even during dead months, but it would definitely help.

After the abysmal state of the Vita release, it was pretty much an inevitability. Still, kinda sad for Western Vita owners. I'm sure you'll have a petition popping up within a week as usual.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Yikes at that bullshot-to-reality comparison for Digimon. I still remember how I was really, positively surprised by the (apparent) graphics of the game the first times Bandai Namco showed it.

Interesting insight Kuwabara, definitely helpful to understand the situation better :p

Yeah, as you said this was inevitable and you can't blame third party companies for that.

Let's hope the NX portable is a success and can support modern engines.

KuwabaraTheMan explained quite well why Next Order is not necessarily aimed at kids, but the image comparison doesn't tell anything about a difference in demographic - perhaps you though so because the protagonist of Cyber Sleuth is not smiling?
So, completely honest question, but you do understand that products tailor their character ages, mannerisms, and designs at a particular target audience, right?

Like there's a reason Pokemon and Yokai Watch star children, JRPGs tend to star teens, and Yakuza stars older men. I can go into this further if you need more clarification.

So Project Setsuna coming out on PS4 and PC in the West, digital-only. I believe Nirolak (and several others) pretty much predicted it.

And it has a limited physical collector's edition a la Child of Light as well.

Everyone knows the pokemon universe stars ageless, immortal main characters like Red and Ash. This is one of the major reasons I remain a fan, its one of the few games that caters to my lonely demographic.

:p

Of course I know that (even though that's debatable that a 1:1 ratio between age of characters and target audience always exist, see plenty of jRPG starring underage girls targeted towards young adults; GTA characters typically older than the primary audience; and so on) Here, I just don't see much difference such that one can infer that Cyber Sleuth is targeted towards 15+ yo people and Next Order to 7-14 yo people; Cyber Sleuth main characters are teenagers; Next Order main character is a high school student (12th grade by the website?). Character design doesn't look much different between the two games, at least not as different so to identify two completely different primary audiences as you were believing:

I guess the way I'd express the distinction is that the age gap of the characters mirrors something like Kingdom Hearts versus Final Fantasy, which I think clearly have a lot of audience overlap, but still some different considerations about who they are targeting.

Similarly, I don't think you'd see a design like Final Fantasy X's Shiva in a Kingdom Hearts game, which is where I'd draw a distinction between how the girl with her chest halfway out of her dress compares to the women in Next Order.

Cyber Sleuth also has a large SMT-esque bent to it that I suspect is probably not in Next Order.
