Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

mmmmmm I trust Patrick but this to me seems like a bad move on Sony part.

Sony has done so well on this gen having all the right moves, being very in sync with the community.
Being the 3rd party first choice etc.

But this just seems so crazy.

Doubtful. I mean, of course they're working on a successor, but a PS4.5 coming out soon? I'll believe that when I see it. Also, there's some pain falsehoods in that article. The current PS4 does NOT output photos and video at 4K.

I could see it. Though it is somewhat unlikely to think they'll get anything running at 4K and a reasonable framerate in the next 2 or so years and still have it affordable. I could absolutely see them doubling down on PSVR and are probably getting feedback from devs that maintaining 120FPS on a PS4 is really hard.

One look at iPad's sales trend should be enough to show you why that's a terrible idea.

DqacnFh.jpg

I wonder what this chart would look like if 2010's iPad was the sole model still being sold in 2015 (awaiting a 2018 release of the iPad 2).

Wow just seen this thread, crazy shit!

My initial thoughts are a bit tepid, I wasn't enthused at the idea of upgradable XB1's and it'll be weird having a PS4.5.

Would imagine all exclusive Sony games would also be on the newer machine and would be really inferior on the older model PS4.

I'd feel like way behind constantly playing on the older model too.

Hmmm..

Hopefully this is out this year (unlikely), otherwise I'm going to cancel my PSVR preorder.

I haven't got a PS4 and was going to get one for VR. But not if there's potentially an upgrade around the corner.

lmao. You expect a box to be released that lets you play 4k gaming in the 500-600 range??? That is some funny shit. 980ti's alone barely can hit 4k @30fps and that is turning some settings down to get there and those are +$600 GPU's alone. You want 4k and minimum 30fps out of console by the end of the year, expect to pay about $1,200.00 if not more for that pleasure. Perhaps in full year or year and a half you can get a console doing 4k/30fps at around $800+.

Don't forget that those graphics cards have a lot of untapped potential, I'm sure a game developed specifically for an 980Ti could do bonkers.

Not to start a fight.... but it sounds like you bought something that doesn't have alotta stuff going for it at the moment...? But I understand that logic. You want Sony to do 4K because you want more content to justify owning a 4KTV.

I think that the entertainment industry is going to push for 4K very heavily soon. PlayStation has always been the product that is used as a testing ground and a way to increase the adoption rate. This PS4K will probably release minimum Fall 2017. By then, the push for 4K will be on every TV maker or Blu-ray player maker or Netflix or movie studio's agenda. There will be a lot of 4K content coming soon, and it makes sense that Sony applies their tech in the PS4. There's no way they're going to be beaten to their own game.

why ia 4k surprising? 4x the current PS4 power would drive 4k and that should be doable with a reasonable power draw at 14/16nm

What do you think this is going to cost?

Keep in mind, Sony wants to never sell at a loss again AND they want consoles to be cheap as well.

It's not realistic. Like, at all.

I could see 2005 get-two-jobs Sony pulling a move like this. Not the new Sony.

The only way AAA gaming survives is by selling millions of units. You won't ever have to worry about Sony/MS deciding to suddenly abandon XB1/PS4. There are too many units in people's hands to ignore.

I didn't say abandon, I said I fear some games will run badly on PS4 because resources have been overstretched to take advantage of the 4.5 and they wont scale back adequately to the vanilla model as has happened on the N3DS compared to the 3DS.

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
So Sony and Microsoft update the hardware for more power. Meanwhile Nintendo will release a new console to catchup with the old PS4 model with some weird controller...

This is messed up.

Nintendo...forever one step behind in specs...

Yup...the next couple of consoles from all 3 will be interesting.

This would make more sense if sony was bringing back Other OS. Become the new Amiga while pc becomes the new xbox. Do it.

I'm calling bullshit on this. None of it makes any sense. You cannot buy a GPU that is fit for purpose for a console that will fit the PS4's architecture that can run the current gen style games at 4K. If you could it sure as shit won't be affordable so it's suicide.

4K is a tiny market ATM and VR hasn't even started so banking on either while potentially pissing off a huge userbase is a crazy move.

A casual end user is also going to be confused when they see a PS4 and a PS4.5 (or Pro or whatever they call it) for a ridiculous price.

It would be easier to market by going straight to PS5. Which again they will not do with VR on the horizon.

It makes no sense from a business profit making long-term perspective.

That makes absolutely no sense. What will the millions of current owners do? Throw their PS4s in the trash and never buy another game? Current owners that don't upgrade will continue to buy games and play them as if the new version never came out.

I don't have to keep supporting Sony if I don't like what they are doing. Sell PS4, buy a NX.

If Nintendo starts doing this shit as well (with their home console) then sell that one as well and..... go handheld or something.

Yikes, I'm not liking the thought of PS4, or perhaps even consoles going forward in general, being upgraded with more powerful models so frequently. One the main draws of a console for me is the value proposition in the lifespan they have usually had up until know.

I don't really want to be dropping money on a console that I know will give me an inferior experience after a few years after a new more powerful version is released. As a console guy, PC gaming would seem like a much more enticing investment to me if this is indeed going to happen in the future.

Fuck.this.

When spencer hinted at this I thought to myself how glad I was that my ps4 is my main console. But now? Fuck you Sony. And the worst part is, they might make money doing this.

Here comes everyone praising Sony for how smart they are
A company making money? How horrible.

In layman’s terms, 4K resolution is around twice the pixel size of 1080p, which is the current standard for games on PlayStation 4 and competing consoles. The current PS4 can output 4K photos and videos, but cannot support 4K resolutions for games. With this upgrade, it would. Besides resolution, developers would have an opportunity to push more effects and other graphical tweaks to make their games look better, thanks to the new GPU.

Huh?

4K is 4x the size of 1080p..... and not "around 4x" it's exactly 4x no?

Meh, don't believe this stuff. This has to be PS5 if it's aiming for 4K.

No way a GPU in a PS4.5 going for $500 can hit 4k30 in PS4 games, I don't believe that.

I would imagine it would be more of a New Nintendo 3DS situation. No exclusives on the new system (maybe one or two) but gradually as the tech in games advances like in any other generation, the older version of the hardware will struggle with performance (think Hyrule Warriors Legends on 3DS vs New).

This is really no different from how every generation works. Last gen at the end of the PS3's lifespan, games like GTAV and FarCry 3 were routinely running at 25 FPS. The PC had moved so far ahead that it became the lead platform for most third party developers, and the console versions were barely cutting it. I think Sony and Microsoft want to have a long lifespan this generation, but know the current hardware ain't gonna cut it. They have to extend it out not only on a marketing perspective, but on a technical one as well.

Me. I own a 4KTV. I'd love some 4K content. Sony being one of the forefronts of 4K need to target the audience and prepare them for the wave of everything going 4K.

Off topic. Any HDR blue rays in the making yet? Or is it supposed to be standard in 4k blu rays and the TV does the work? Feeling the upscale here :/

Let's all thank the switch to x86, everyone.

yepp.

You are so ignoring the massive research showing how the reason why tablets are falling are due to the fact that phones themselves are replacing them.

Honestly, if this releases in e.g. Fall 2017, I expect the current PS4 to drop to $299 or $249, and PS4K to release at $399.

Well 4K would help PSVR, even if the headset weren't updated right away (super sampling for the headset basically). I'm on the fence about this. Wanted an iOS style system for ages and think it is the inevitable way it's going to go, and recent noises suggest Microsoft and Sony are seriously considering it. If all old games work forward, and the cycle is no less than 3 years or so then fine.

What I mean is- if the entire backwards library of PS4 is 1080p, could the PS4.5 suddenly run it at 4K at the drop of a hat?

No I got that. I just, well, umm... You know every modern game rendering engine can support multiple resolutions right? Like in case they need to drop it to 900p or you know provide 4k for their PC users?

I am fairly certain first party dev engines have this ability as well. Putting it on console doesn't magically remove these features (they likely still exist in the code). They just get rid of the option to do so in the UI.

No way they're going to get games playing at a reasonable frame in 4k for ~$600.

Don't see Sony releasing another PlayStation for anything near $600 again after the PS3 launch either.

I don't understand why people assume that because 4K games are a target that they must mean 4K games with Uncharted 4 visual fidelity. For all you know it could be Flower-style 4K games or something like Journey. They're not going to launch a $600+ PS4, chill out.

Hell no, if this is a new Console Industry trend I'm abandoning consoles.

Unless Sony or AMD are sitting on some alien technology, 4K capable gaming console at ~$399 doesn't seem possible.

Especially if it's not being sold at a loss.

This shit isn't adding up, lol

The 4K stuff will just be largely PR speak. It will technically support it, and use it for multimedia and maybe some indie games, but not much more than that. Devs will push AAA games at 1080p with better graphics and frame rates.

Besides -

1- The hardware would have to be ridiculously powerful
2- 1080p sets are still by far the majority, and will be for a long time

Everything. They launched with fewer features than their predecessors. Some of those features are still missing. They underperform, technically. Seeing Fallout 4's framerate just fall apart on the PS4, it was reminiscent of seeing the 360 and PS3 struggling in 2012.

Both systems have been consistently disappointing to own compared to their predecessors.

Features is OS development....got nothing to do with hardware but the teams developing the OS and it's requires bigger teams these days - much bigger.

As for the hardware holding up...it's holding up just fine vs. previous gens. Consoles continue to be the lowest common denominator for AAA third party games. The gap between PC/Console versions is not gen-apart defining. It will stay that way for this traditional cycle. Not sure what the rant is about other than some personal preference for something better hypothetically. That argument is easy to make. "Better everything"....where does the buck stop? So yeah a non-issue.

I salute you, pal.
You're absolutely right, it doesn't matter who came up with this plan first, though it is interesting how fast Sony is reacting (if true).
Well, I have made my peace with this whole upgrade idea. I'm one of those who doesn't want another 7 year cycle. So, if MS releases a new console in 2017 (4 year cycle) and Sony the next PS in 2018 (5 years) I'm absolutely fine with this, because I will only get consoles for exclusive games now which means Xbox is out and I will only get a new PS when quality exclusives pile up. But believe me...if MS makes good $ with their games on W10 we could see PS exclusives hitting a PSN PC service in the future.

I think that we'll definitely see PSN on PC. There's no way Sony is going to let Microsoft start making money on the PC with their exclusives and they don't and the PS is the same architecture. It just makes sense (and then Sony will be exiting the console market. ;)... /s).

I look forward to the day where you choose where you play and your games follow you. It just makes sense to me.

WAIT A MINUTE

If Sony is indeed looking to change the way console cycles work and push consoles at a faster pace, why would they focus specifically on 4K gaming right now when barely anyone has a 4K TV in their home?

Let's take a scenario where a PS4.5 releases in Holiday 2017 and 4K TV's adoption rates rockets skyrocket at the same time. Great! Everyone loves their PS4.5!

If we're under the assumption that the main incentive to upgrade these consoles would be more horsepower, what exactly are they going to offer with a PS5 or whatever it's going to be called when they release it 3 or 4 years down the line? Prepare for 8K TV's in 2028?

Why would they launch a machine that plays flower style games in 4k? Why step back?
