NX Controller Rumor [Up5: Original was fake, and thus this is too]

aaand the little hope I had for NX is gone.

No way Nintendo would get rid of buttons for their staple franchise like 2D and 3D Mario. You know there's either buttons in the back or when you turn it on maybe buttons pop out of the screen.

I don't know much about haptic technology, but I'm guessing best case scenario is you can "feel" exactly where the buttons are.

I'm hoping this is the handheld for that reason. An injury dulled my sense of touch so I can't feel buttons or rumble well.

I really don't understand what they're trying to go for here,

This controller looks so gimmicky. To be fair we really don't know anything about it but first impressions leave me very confused.

Why do I even bother going into NX threads when it's only "Nintendo isn't doing exactly what I want them to therefore the console/company is doomed to fail"

Not like this :(

A controller without physical buttons is not what I want.

If this is the handheld, that's even worse. DS+3DS compatibility would be gone then.

Of course it's usless to remind people it can still be real.. while being a prototype that is not used in the end... We'll continue to pretend it's the definitive NX controller for 100 pages :)

People will also continue to convince themselves they like it, if only to make the prospects of the NX more real.

Also, freaking LOL at all your overreactions in here!

While it's looking a lot more like the real thing, we still don't know ANYTHING!

Not if this is the handheld or the console controller, not what's in the thing, HELL NOT EVEN IT'S BACKSIDE!

But you guys already know everything about it, just by looking at the pics.

This is some pure comedy gold in here, someone hand me the popcorn!

People like to whinge at things that are different because it confuses them and they are scared.

I'm not super clear on haptic tech, how could the controller differentiate between intentional button presses and attempting to locate the "button" in the first place?

I imagine force sensors so that you'll get haptic feedback if you slide a finger over the button, but you'll need to press harder to actually register an input. That really shouldn't be that difficult to my understanding

It does look slick, especially the new black one. Nicer visually than the 3DS and the gamepad.
Whatever it does new/differently should really be announced by April at the latest.

If its an early prototype, the leaker is in Kyoto. And thats just insane.

Would still prefer some buttons, but it does look pretty slick in these photos in a way it didn't in the other photos. Sticks actually look rubbery and useable, etc. Still gonna hold out hope that the final will be a little better, but I could see it working. Not sure how they're gonna simulate buttons though. If that haptic stuff is actually good enough then that's fine. If it's just as good, then why does it matter, you know? But everybody says it isn't, so we'll see....

I will choose to believe Nintendo in this one and hope that they are doing the right thing... but it does look pretty lame for a controller (also touchscreen buttons...why!?), and uncomfortable to hold.

For people who have tried this, how good is it at replicating "real" button presses?

It's really good at simulating the macbook trackpad click. Dunno how well that will apply to traditional buttons, but it's good enough for the trackpad application that people don't believe me when I tell them "No, that's not an actual physical click."

Is it bad to say I actually kind of like the way that looks? Could look even better in the final design. Majority of posters on GAF will hate it because it isn't "traditional".

I dont think it does. At least up to year 2014. Maybe it is pressure sensitive

Anyways, I still dont understand a thing! What are they trying to do here

FakeEdit: Yes, I also thought about the Vita, but unconfortable

Looks more sexy than last pic, but still uncomfortable and even worse: still without any buttons!! Almost like a mobile gaming device with added sticks, hmmm I really hope they know what they're doing.

You like iOS fake button gaming?

It will certainly be interesting to see context-depending virtual buttons on a home console.
It reminds me of the different overlays that the Atari Jaguar got:

And I guess that controller will be fully portable when outdoors, so it will have to have virtual buttons like a phone when not connected to the home console.

If it's actually real: I'd like to see it in action/normal person feedback.

That's still 'if it's actually real'. What's in the pictures is still fakeable, and I'm not willing to trust simple pictures of a turned off doohickey in the age of 3d printers.

Pretty sad to say that I find the gamepad in the shot much more appealing than this thing. The controller will have to do something pretty amazing to make me forget about the lack of real buttons. I'd also consider it a pretty incredible disappointment if this is what Nintendo gives us after the failure of the Wii U. "You know that thing people hated last time? Let's do that again."

Trying my best to reserve judgment and to wait until we hear what it actually does, but this seems pretty real at this point and what I see is not appealing.
