Having said that, this could simply be an alternative controller packed in alongside a more traditional one. In that case nobody should really have any problems, but it requires Nintendo pack both types in with each system sold so devs can take advantage of the "experimental" controller's features and know every NX owner can access them the moment they buy the system, and just the system (without accessories).

The problem in that case would be that the price of the console would get jacked up for this thing.

Honestly, the lack of buttons has me a bit concerned still, but I feel ergonomics will be less of an issue now. This controller looks small enough that its odd shape shouldn't feel as off-putting in a players hands as it would otherwise be.

Don't get me wrong though, some sort of grips would be a welcome addition here. Also again, the lack of buttons is a real concern. Nintendo better hope that their set-up is rock solid here, because even a slight loss in reliability and responsiveness would be a deal breaker for a lot of players.

Assuming that all of this is real, of course.

I'm worried about the degree of tactile feedback however on a device screen that small, tho. Will make it hard to provide minute levels of simultaneous feedback of, say, two or three different surfaces concurrently, especially for people with larger hands.

The Gamecube controller was already something of a disaster for people with even regular-sized hands (well, the d-pad definitely was).

I really don't think the gamepad was really the reason Nintendo didn't get third party ports, especially since a number of games were ported to it at the start of it's lifespan.
