I can't believe people are still in denial. Because some untrustworthy tweeted something too. Some people must be really terrified about nintendo's future.

I called it

That looks awesome.
This is going to be $300 though, isn't it?

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
"Oh no Pie and Beans, a hybrid console would be too dumb, who would want that". Enjoy your oval buttonless punishment, heathens.

So, lets go all the way down Inferring Road and climb into

SPECULATION HELL:

1) The leak about Nintendo releasing NX console in the west first and NX handheld in the east looks pretty realistic at this point.

2) Much like the WiiU got some year later ports, looks like the NX console is gonna launch with stuff like The Division Oval Edition and whatnot from whichever third parties bother to turn up.

3) Due to the Division being likely, we're looking at some Xbox One or above specs most likely, which is what the murmurs have been murmuring for a while.

4) I 100% assure you there will be a sequence where the oval phases into Samus' visor during a Metroid reveal and it will be the money shot.

Now lets jump into

OPINION HELL:

-Nintendo learned nothing from the WiiU's failure, or at most they learned the entirely wrong things.

-They seem to think the GamePad's form factor is what sank it, and that smartphones have made kids think buttons are "deeply uncool", so they're desperately trying to chase the smartphone tablet crowd without ever making a smartphone.

-They still seem to think theres space for them in the dedicated console market with no doubt even fewer third parties after coming a distant third behind Sony and MS and selling a couple mil more than half of the Gamecube.

-This thing isn't based on the handheld's architecture if its running The Division which makes things even stupider for their attempt at unifying their development to target one middleground.

-Developing a handheld AND a console at the same time seems like it would yield less focus and new ideas and is just them making new things on necessity. Normally their R&D would get a crack at thinking about one or the other for a good two years, but instead here we are looking at them both within the year.

- The only games I bought a WiiU for, Platinum action games, are going to be definitively worse off. Bayonetta 3 with smartphone wicked weave special move quick buttons is THE DARKEST TIMELINE.

-Launching this console around the same time the world is going to go into full VR fever is going to be apocalyptic for them. While Sony, Valve, and Oculus allow access to 360 degree worlds, Nintendo is going to come back with "Its like the WiiU GamePad but AN OVAL".

I actually had hope about a year ago that they'd just double down on handheld and learn theres no space in consoles for them, and go hybrid. Just an all in one Nintendo thing, back to basics but really good ones, and just hunker down with quality no crazy gimmicks. Yet here we are with the stupidest fucking leftball bullshit I've seen from them yet. Its going to get buried.

Multi-touch screens have been a thing for a long time now
I know that, but typically multi-touch works with separate fingers. Using a thumb to hold down a and b on an emulator to run in Mario (or other platformers) for example, doesn't work. One finger is one position on the screen (basically one virtual button). You can't play traditional Mario games on this controller (using traditional virtual buttons), assuming it's real.

If it is a flexible screen with the buttons underneath that's pretty cool, it would allow custamisable button graphics due to the screen overlay.

My only bugbear would be screen cleanliness, i have to polish my phone and Ipad screens every days as the slightest mark drives me nuts, this thing will have smudges all over it within an hour.

If nothing else I can see some scope for 'neat'/cute visual-tactile interplay between the sticks and screen, with the sticks being embedded on the screen. Like say a rope on the screen connecting the two sticks, rotate the left stick anti-clockwise to pull it left, and vice vers for the right. I'm sure nintendo's own software will explore lots of 'cute' ideas like that.

However I'm not at all sure that kind of thing is a strong enough hook to hang a platform on.

Looks real to me

The power button also looks like the one used on the 3ds xl

It also looks like it has physical trigger buttons in one of the pictures, top left hand cirner. Similar style to the gamecubes

#neverforget

"Why did Wii Cross the road? Just to suffer? Every night, I can feel the A button... and my shoulder triggers... even my C stick. The buttons I've lost... the PS4/X1 ports I've lost... won't stop hurting... It's like they're all still there. You feel it, too, don't you? I'm gonna make them give back our past."

There's a difference between saying an unexpectedly controversial statement in an interview or on twitter, and directing people to a real leak. One is making a mistake because you underestimated how people would respond to what you were saying. The other is very blatantly going to not only get you fired, but likely blacklisted from any similar job in the entire industry.

I think this image now applies to this thread, right now xD.

I need more of that controller. How will it work?! Is it just the prototype? What's happening!?! April is so far away!

I don't. I don't think Nintendo understands the home console market. I don't think Nintendo has a good grasp of hardware technology. I don't think Nintendo understands their target audience or how to grow their existing audience.

.
Idk about all that. They are definitely very capable hardware engineers and one of the most meticulous game developers.

You might be right about the specific thing but odds are they are 100% more competent at the business, gaming, and tech aspects of the game industry than most of us armchair analysts. Like you think Nintendo doesn't get it, but really they probably get it more than any of us. Doesn't make them infallible or not make mistakes, but they (and their team of graduates who specialize in their fields lmao) definitely understand the market better than you or I. It's just not that easy. And it's a risky business, triple so when you are constantly trying to carve your own niche

arent printless screens becoming a thing?

Ok so if you guys don't think that is the real nx controller then what is it? It's obviously something. It's not a piece of cardboard.

But why? How is that better than normal buttons? How isn't this a gimmick?

Also why the hell do we need buttons INSIDE the screen? People complain all the time about obstructive UI elements that cover the game screen and now we need buttons on top of that? Let alone out own fingers!

Why? Why not a clean screen? Dual screen (one for the game, one for UI elements and touch) was the best thing Nintendo did, why ruin that shit?

Well, ASSUMING they feel good, you can't see the benefits of that?!
Different configurations aside from the triangle? Shapes and sizes? Colors that match the UI? Fighting games could go back to 6 buttons without every game needing that many. Haptic/tactile touch screen buttons would be HUGE, but like I said, it banks of them feeling like a good substitute for physical buttons
