Oh crap ._.

So Enter the Gungeon is really cool; a more tactile and impactful Binding of Isaac.

I hated how nothing in Isaac felt it had weight; you skid about, tears just.. splashed on people and then stuff would die. Here things lumber around, bullets have feedback and your character's jaunt all add up for a nice feeling game.

I'll post a few more light impressions soon, embargo is April 5th.

That's the impression I had gotten from the footage. The crazy weapons and items and weird enemies of Isaac + the satisfying shooting and dodging of Nuclear Throne

Glad to hear you're enjoying it

You should play Nuclear Throne if you haven't already.

Thanks Moo. I'm a big fan of Nuclear Throne and pre-ordered Gungeon. Played quite a bit of Isaac, liked it enough but the "splashy" weaponry just can't compete with Throne's guns. I know Isaac has a ton of upgrades and Throne is considered relatively thin in that area, but the guns in Throne are so satisfying to use. Gungeon may be a mix and match of those games' best qualities. Besides, Devolver-published games rarely steer me wrong.

Here's a neat game I tried at last year's IndieCade. There's a demo available at the link:

Tribal & Error - (PC)
TribalError_Demo-2015-06-20-13-06-05-47.bmp

http://tribalanderror.com/

In Tribal & Error you’re a robot sent back to observe the ancient times, but the ice age is coming and to save humanity you need to learn their language first. You’ll observe, repeat and master the cavemen tongue.

I haven't! I had kept an eye on it for so long but then never bought it :(

The sense of humour is great as well, as you would expect.

You're going to love it!

Now give me more HLD impressions!

HLD's pretty damn good you guys.

I'm not sold on all the decisions in the game -- the design tension between wanting to not use text and it being extremely useful is palpable. So some stuff is a little less, shall we say, functional than it would be otherwise.

It's a very fun game though and it is fun to explore. The art is awesome and it feels very fluid and responsive.

My one wish is to be able to place a marker down on the map so that I could find my way back to it later. I found a door I wanted to come back to and then forgot where it was, and spent a lot of time redoing areas, which wouldn't be so bad except the enemies respawn and maybe are sometimes harder?

Hyper Light Drifter is pretty neat!

The lack of dialogue or explanation or forced direction makes for a very dreamlike tone which is counterbalanced by the difficulty of the combat and puzzles, lol

I don't quite understand what's going on or if I'm supposed to be where I am, but I like it

Grah, and still no PS4 date for HLD.

Hyper Light Drifter has some of the best combat, art design and animation* I've ever seen in an ARPG. I'd happily pay for a 60 FPS patch since that's the game's only glaring flaw.

I'm not sure about the music though. While I loved Disasterpiece's work in Fez, it feels out of place in HLD. Or maybe I think it's just too samey. I'll decide when I get my soundtrack code in a few days.

*The intro cutscene is astonishing.

STRAFE® has apparently become STRAFE® Royale:
Hardcore gamers no longer want to pay to full price for a single player game so we’ve made some changes to illustrate that we hear you loud and clear.

We’ve made some minor tweaks and can now offer you “STRAFE® Royale” a browser based free to play game! No fans are locked out from enjoying the game due to tight funds or platform restrictions. The future is truly here.

I won't have a chance to play it until tonight so you can be the first!

Anybody have some impressions on Bunker Punks, Inner Sea or Leap of Faith? I assume most folks are busy with Light Drifter but I'd like to pick up something else when I'm done with it.

~6 hours into Hyper Light Drifter. This is so damn good. It's everything I wanted it to be when I first saw the Kickstarter trailer three years ago. The combat is tight, responsive, punishing but fair. Always strike with confidence, never button mash. The art and atmosphere is gorgeous. The world is compelling and mysterious. And of course the little details: the way you can sit down at any time to just chill and admire the environment, the snowy footprints and pools of blood you leave in your wake, your cloak flying and fluttering with each strike, the little sword flourish your character does after a particularly challenging battle, the dust-throwing skid at the end of a dash

Interested in Inner Sea impressions as well

Curious how this plays, will report in a few days.

I'll be interested in hearing about that one too. Looks like my kinda game although I must admit I am becoming increasingly wary of early access games. Although at that price it is hard not to just be impulsive here.

Today is the day. Thanks to everyone participating and helping out with the GOTY thread and especially to Baddy for getting quite a few of the reviews together and the images. Going to finish up the remaining ones today.

April thread going up after that.

Anyone hear about Caveblazers - it looks like a mechanically sound Spelunky clone of sorts, with some expanded elements. It has a neat litlte twist where some enemies emulate the behaviour of other real life players, so you'll encounter all sorts from the passive types to the aggressive ones.

I'm not liking that much my first hour with HLD. The map doesn't seem that useful, the art while being gorgeous sometimes obfuscates what is walkable terrain and what it's not and upgrades are a bit arcane to understand as the UI is not very good at showing what is the currency. Maybe is just me struggling in the opening hour trying to get a feel of it but definitely not having fun with it right now.

Atm my primary annoyance with HLD is the cursor.

In a game where there's many different attacking foes and at time a flashing and changing colours, the cursor which you use to aim and dodge is a blossom of light.

Makes it hard to track more often than I'd like.

Also, the GOTY thread is ALIVE, ALIIIIIIIIIIIIVE:

Awesome, nice to see it all come together

The big spaces between the games makes it a bit annoying to scroll through

I agree, the format isnt perfect. I also tried the format without the space, which made it a bit annoying to read/skim through for a bigger text as the entries really needed to be more clearly divided, so that was the best I could come up with now.

Visually, the headers are too similar to the "wide" screenshots next to each other, so I needed to change a lot there, like using red game names and such. Probably will try a different layout this year that doesnt have pictures in the beginning and the end, or using another element to differentiate entries, maybe quote boxes around the whole entry instead of only the screenshot, not sure yet.

If you don't mind, I could edit in what I use in the IOS threads

between each entry

Excellent work there, although I hope i haven't wronged you in the past cos you've had a bunch of my blurbs rewritten. I will be checking out that Quassi puzzle game (on mile so I can't cross check the spelling.)

Sorry if I wrote anything you already posted, I went off a list of games that I thought were not yet posted and didnt recheck again. I was just running my head through the wall yesterday to finally get the thread done.

The text "one of the best games I ever played" and the screenshots to dont together in my head. Need to check it out eventually, but the review doesnt do a great job informing the reader what about the game is so unlike any other puzzle game, that it justifies that price tag and price.

The price is a bummer, I was more expecting like $15, especially considering that Stephen was still pondering a few weeks ago whether the game would be free.

The game ought to be mind-blowing for its level design. Increpare is really good at this.

Quoting my impressions playing This War of Mine. This game is really interesting and hard-hitting.
Well damn. I just lost in this war of mine (got up to
day 17
). Lost 2 of my people the same night, then one
fled
, and one
commited suicide 2 days later.
Damn does this game hit hard.

Right before my cook died, I sent him scavenging at an abandoned house. I saw somebody and I couldn't hide from her. I thought it would be fine.
She got scared, called for her partner. I tried to flee but they were chasing me. I didn't even know if they wanted to hurt me or not. I tried to hide in the shadows and they pulled me out. They were both holding knives.
I tried to defend myself and ended up killing the man. The woman dropped to her knees and cried while I fled, severely wounded.

Damn does this game hit hard.

That was Katia's story.
Now playing Pavel's story, starting with I believe a better team as we have
a runner, a scavenger and a cook.
