I think what he means is he wouldn't want a "Xbone but a bit better" thing, he'd want a fully fledged turbo bitchin' machine

Maybe fans doesn't like the idea?

I mean, the threads we had on it tended to focus on the feasibility of what they had proposed, alongside it utilizing UWP and it scaling across multiple hardware profiles. There seemed to be a lot of people who were interested though, as well as doubters, same for the PS4K.

I doubt that any sort of negative reaction in a GAF thread would make them cancel their plans. Especially with their competitor planning on doing exactly that.

Its called spin, Sony has enough goodwill to deal with a bit of consumer backlash where as MS at this moment especially the XB division does not. I would not be surprised to see MS announce something right after or right before Sony. I do expect whatever MS announces to be more powerful than the PS4K if what Phil says is to be taken literally.

.

I personally don't see why Sony is potentially doing what they are doing. They are in a good place with absolutely no need to come out with an "updated model" with more horsepower. It could backfire heavily for them.
Easy:
1-If MS launchs a new console they counter it with something similar plus the already bigger PS4 installed base.
2-If MS goes PC ONLY Sony takes all the console market with two consoles competing in certain way between them. And with PS4K they fight also the PC segment having always a console near the graphics edge.

"Xbox 4K coming this holiday. Play all your favorite Xbox One games* and watch Netflix shows in 4K resolution.

*Upscaled"

Phil, you're a genius.

Also you don't get dig Sony for server issues. XBL has seen some shit recently.

I am reading that as they are going for a lot more power. Although I dont think a console will be in the cards for MS. I would imagine he is implying windows 10 as that upgrade, and the associated PC hardware.

Once again, Spencer has been enormously clear on this point:

Phil Spencer said:
What I'm saying is that hardware innovations happen, we want to be able to embrace those in the console space and make those available and maybe not have to wait seven or eight years for that to happen. Ultimately, the great questions of our time will not be resolved by modular upgrades or incremental upgrades -- that was the great mistake of the Dreamcast and the Steam Machine -- but by iron and blood.

What I expect is that the next Xbox will be 100% backwards compatible from day one. Everything you own, you still own, and can play on the new box.

Whether that is an XB1.5 or and Xbox 10, I don't really care.

i don't see the difference. Xbox 1.5 or Xbox Two

The Problem some/most people have, is that a new powerful console gets announced only 3 years later

so in the end it would be the same if MS announce Xbox Two this year and Sony Ps4K

Phil is really needs to get his message straight, I have absolutely no idea what he actually intends anymore.

I believe we will see more hardware innovation in the console space than we’ve ever seen. You’ll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible because we have a Universal Windows Application running on top of the Universal Windows Platform that allows us to focus more and more on hardware innovation without invalidating the games that run on that platform

I’m not a big fan of Xbox One and a half. If we’re going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers. I don’t know anything about any of the rumors that are out there, but I can understand other teams’ motivations to do that. For us, our box is doing well. It performs, it’s reliable, the servers are doing well. If we’re going to go forward with anything, like I said, I want it to be a really substantial change for people – an upgrade.

Yeah, Phil, how the heck did those rumors get started? Crazy, isn't it?

They will support Xbox One BC but that brand name won't be used again. Microsoft should wait it out, they aren't going to turn the tables with a small upgrade. Get their ducks in a row for Fall 2017/2018 and make something really good while supporting Xbox One with a slim at a cheaper price.

The insane part is that after the prolonged length of the last console generation, the current generation could end up being exceptionally short.

They are already doing bad in console business.

They will do worst.

Xbone needs more a upgrade than PS4 but I guess the PS4 arch is easy to upgrade than Xbone arch.

I'm not against a ".5" console like what Sony is rumored to be doing (at least not in theory), but these quotes are music to my ears. It makes me more confident that Spencer would push for a 4th Xbox to be a much more powerful device, rather than the modest design of the Xbox One.

If I'm MS I'd come in with a cheaper model of the same system. Sony making a misstep. Time to hit hard. £199.99 would be a buy price on any console for me.

Co'mon Phil.

Hang on - wasn't Phil Spencer/MS the first ones to admit they were looking into an incremental upgrade for the Xbox before even the PS4K rumors got out? What the heck is this backpedaling going on right now?!?

It seems like a bunch of console gamers are afraid of feeling invalidated in their purchase and have been very vocal about it.

Would actually be pretty interesting if they came out with a cheaper model while Sony is going the other way.

MS and Sony have basically done a Freaky Friday from last gen to this gen. Last gen, cross platform games virutally always ran and looked better on 360. This gen, they look better on PS4. I have both consoles, but my PS4 gets almost all of the love and the trigger time. The Xbone only gets love when it has an exclusive I want. Personally I'm fine with the situation as is, but if I was head of the Xbox division I expect I'd be pretty goddamn unsatisfied. Y'all dropped the ball this gen.

distancing MS from the idea that the next console will be half a gen away, thats all. which sounds great. its still likely not all that far away (i'd guess 2017) and fits their plans for unified content. probably not all that unlike ps4k, but trying to get ahead of the idea that it will only be marginally more powerful.

Xbox Two will be backwards compat. with XBone. They're not looking at an incremental upgrade as rumors and leaks might suggest, they're just going to call it a cycle by Holiday 2017, IMO, and introduce the new hardware that will be a serious step up with full backwards compatibility.

MS is gonna fall so behind if they don't release it this holiday and Sony does. And the NX will probably launch with better specs than Xbox one.

RIP Xbox division if true.

MS can't afford to come weak if NX and PS4k are coming up decent. MS you had balls the the first two generations you entered gaming, man up on this POS X1 and give consumers something real and inventive like the first two were. Next to nintendo GC or PS4, I can't think of a company that makes better console powerhouses technically. They deserve all the crap on this subject this generation they took an easy road out for no real gain.

Just saying it aloud if smartphone companies can rake in the money they do on incremental upgrades then I see no reason MS, Sony, and Nintendo can't do the same besides incompetence and fear.

Sure why not? It's not a new console just a model. Sony won't wait if MS goes early.

What would be the point in creating a new system with 2x the GPU, new CPU etc just to replace it in 2 years? Seems like a waste of money and time.
And what devs are going to be making games that take advantage of a system that is only going to last 2 years? Games can take 2 years to develop as it is. The first year the system comes out, you'd already have devs starting to make games for the PS5 instead.
I just really can't see Sony doing that.

Agree with this. Microsoft wants to get the next gen rolling already.

Given the work they've done on the software side of things, apps and games for the One shouldn't have a problem running on the next Xbox.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the fourth Xbox out by fall of 2017.
