Red Dead Redemption stories emerge from court documents, including Houser panicking

Pretty insightful stuff here, although a bit one-sided. Sam Houser always came over as a bit of a nutjob though. Genius perhaps, but crazy genius. And apparently not a great project manager.

I hope this lawsuit continues to give.

We finally know why there haven't been any Singleplayer DLC for GTAV, it seems like they are incapable of producing any without The Benz.

Keep in mind, this is all from Benzie's legal team as they're trying to win a settlement for hundreds of millions of dollars.

I asked this earlier but I'm still not clear how an employee ever got entitled to this kinda money in the first place.

Like, he didn't own the IP or anything did he? I'm mean that even surpasses global corporation CEO bonus money.

So Rockstar games are going to suck now that Benzies isn't there to make sense of everything? That's kinda what I'm getting from all this.

To be fair, San Diego really screwed the pooch on RDR and it seems like the North guys actually knew what the fuck they were doing. The discrepancy seems entirely justified to me lol.

What? How much of a hand did North have in RDR? I thought it was basically 99% San Diego.

I'm wondering how exactly they had trouble with a fundamental element of the game that's basically the same as GTA.

On a project that big in scale? Easily. Without proper project management tasks will not get completed in proper time/order, might not be finished to completion, or potentially not get looked at period. Hundreds of workers running around with no proper direction... Not any one issue may be super obvious when that is happening. Maybe it was a known issue, but no one was tasked with fixing it and they all had a whole pile of other important work to finish? One person with no direction thinks another person with no direction is taking care of it? Maybe someone was working on it and due to poor management they were told to start working on another task causing it to fall by the wayside? It was talked about, but it ended there due to an unorganized workload? Could be anything. Project management is kind of important.

Yeah, if you read the outline in the court brief from Benzie's lawyers it doesn't make sense that he'd be entitled to that kind of money. It's all to push for a settlement.

The details coming out from this case are making me realise exactly why the GTA games turn out the way they do.

I've never ever enjoyed the clunky nature of the way they played and they seemed like a bit of a mess to me. Now I know why. Leslie had to keep being called in to clean up train wrecks so the final product basically ended up being one mans effort too clean up a mess in a short a time as possible.

Makes sense. Now that Leslie is gone, I'll definitely continue to not buy any future GTA games now that he won't be there to make it at least playable.

On the other hand he might be the reason the GTA games play so clunkily. Neither Max Payne 3 or RDR were headed by him and they are the best playing Rockstar games.

The unauthorized "biography" about GTA and Rockstar was an awesome read. It said that if R* North employees came back from lunch carrying doggy bags from a restaurant Sam Houser didn't like and he happened to spot them, he'd make them throw them in the trash.

What?!

He clearly was a part of RDR in some form according to those emails. Max Payne was also already an established franchise when Rockstar started on Max Payne3.

Let's not forget the documents show the most favorable side of the story for Benzie (i.e. he's the man behind the success of all Rockstar games and the Housers are imposters and pricks). Which may be true, but since everyone here seem to acknowledge that this is the truth behind it all... and the truth for the games that have not been announced yet...

ehhh...I wouldn't look too much into that. Benzies is a intense private person who has always tried to keep out of the public eye and remain well..private.

So much so that whenever outlets would do features for GTA or interview Benzies they were never allowed to photograph, record or film him. lol He just may well of not been comfortable up there on the stage in front of everyone and it was also one of the rare public appearances by him.

That's hilarious. That's what you get for trying to cheat someone out of their money.

Ohhhh! Brilliant :D

This thread, man.

But really I worry, hopefully needlessly, about RDR2 and GTA6 now.

Mutha f'er like "Hold up. Where's that lunch from? I don't like that place; throw it away". Whaaat?? Haha, damn!

Probably explains the SP DLC situation with GTA V.

Also the mess that Heists were for GTA Online... Both run up to release with it's year+ delay then the lackluster polish (2-4 required at all times, annoying lives where a single person dying fails the entire heist)

Apparently he had the same contract as the Housers, so he really was the #3 on the team and very likely entitled to this kind of money.

Yes Heists probably had to suffer a bit because of the drama as well, but more realistically I would say that Heists got pushed back once they realized they needed a lot more content and polish (R* (and this might or might not be true) said that they had a more difficult time crafting the story and getting things right for the co-op experience redoing and improving many things many times).

But the main reason why it got then pushed back is because of the PS4, Xbox One and PC versions of the game in which a lot of development went into.

Also I disagree with many things you say about the Heists. 2-4 players, yes, it's supposed to be a co-op experience where players have different roles and you need enough players for all the roles. Also you only fail once a player dies if you do the heist or the setup on HARD difficulty. You get 1 extra life on normal and I think 2 on easy. I don't see any issues with that especially because (for the most part) the locations where you respawn when retrying are ok and it's not like you get kicked out of the mission and have to set up everything again.

It never ceases to amaze me that games actually get made. Trying to pull that many people in the same direction at the same time is just incredible. On a project of any size it's incredible but on something like GTA it just seems impossible.

I need a sequel to the Daniel Radcliffe BBC thing.

The Housers may be stupidly ambitious & meticulous, but they're not stupid. If Benzies was even half as crucial as this email makes him out to be, there's no way they'd let him go.

Clearly the email was hyperbole, or they were in a slump and things changed, or they found someone/something to replace Benzies, etc.

The guy did ask for a ridiculously large amount of money. I'd be interested to know the scope of his contributions.

The Houser's are described by many as insane egomaniacs. This actually falls in line with that.
