What is the best execution of the single player fighting game concept?

So I was thinking of Red Earth / Warzard lately, as everyone does at a few points in their lives. And I'm thinking that this might be it. Like, in the alternate universe where competitive fighting games never became the standard and Yie Ar Kung Fu still defined the genre, this game would be seen as a classic.

A lot of Warzard's feature seem like they were be welcome in a normal fighting game.

- Multiple playable characters with their own special moves, normals, throws, combos, all the normal stuff we've seen come to expect since the Street Fighter II days.
- Button variations of super moves. For example, Kenji the ninja's knife launching super can have the knives fly at a 45 degree angle down (light), homing knives that fire upwards before hunting down the enemy (medium), or a slower firing variation where the knives shoot forwards from a ring in front of him (heavy).
- Super jump. This is Marvel vs. Capcom style, and the game expects you to use it. I don't think you can complete the statue-breaking bonus state without it.
- Ultimate guard. Pressing a punch and kick button together has the character go into a defensive stance that negates all damage. It actually lasts a fairly long time, but you can't cancel out of it as far as I know.
- Ultimate counter. The game's version of alpha counters. You can do these for free, but they can only be done following an ultimate guard.
- Pursuit attack. Like in Vampire Saviour, there's a special attack that lets you hit enemies when they're on the ground. It seems to be difficult to land though.
- Fatalities. This is one of only two Capcom games to have some form of them. When Leo or Kenji finish off an enemy with certain attacks, they can chop them in half. Kenji also gets a move which lets him rip out an enemy's heart and crush it if used as a finisher. The heart looks different for some enemies.

But then it has a whole bunch of features that make it clear that single player was the game's focus and versus is a side show.

- Moves are locked behind level up. Every character starts off with two special moves, and there's no way to use all of them in versus mode without grinding up in single player.
- Elemental resistance are a thing, and are also gained by level up. I assume enemies have resistance as well, because Leo is able to get different elemental swords and switch between them.
- There are items that you can pick up during a fight. There's always one in the center of the arena, but past that it's random. This includes health, and the elemental gems used for super moves (including a character non-specific elemental one).
- A whole bunch of giant, unplayable enemies. There are twice as many unplayable bosses as there are player characters.
- A lot of enemies have attacks that cover the full screen attacks with big chip damage. It's because the game expects you to super jump, but it's still way better than any of the specials you have.
- A lot of the enemies have tons of super armor, can fly, or something else that would make them ridiculous even if they were playable.

Because we now live in a post-Street Fighter V world, I feel that I have to discuss the marketability of this game's single player. And honestly, I don't think it could do well outide of an arcade. It has multiple endings meant for New Game +, but even with that, I don't think there's enough content to justify it as a single player game. For people who are too intimidated to play against other people, the game is probably too hard to build up their confidence. I think it would need a more robust RPG-like mode in a home release, like Weapon Master from Soul Calibur II or World Tour from Street Fighter Alpha 3.

Either Mortal Kombat or Virtua Fighter imo, depending on the experience the solo player is looking for.

I actually think Melee's adventure mode is one of the best single player fighting experiences

It's just a tad bit too short.

I enjoyed the story of MK9 more than any previous story mode ever. Injustice and MKX was good too, so yeah. Netherrealm have really nailed that aspect of their games.

Also, the Quest modes of the PS2 Mortal Kombat games were quite fun. I'm not sure if Shaolin Monks count, but that was epic.

This thread gets my seal of approval on the virtue that it features warzard/red earth
I see that game as a throwback to the early sp-centric fighting games ala sf1 and fatal fury 1

I was so disappointed in the combat for Red Earth. Compared to what I was expecting it was very limited.

I hated SFA3, but the World Tour mode was good. Soul Calibur had a great single player aspect as well.

But overall I'm gonna say....

Shenmue

I think that action games like dmc or Bayonetta embody the concept pretty well. They're not 2d fighters but everything from having multiple playable move sets and characters to different combos and mechanics makes it feel similar to a fighter in some ways, just that its solo only. I think it's part of the reason Iove that genre so much.

The takeaways aren't really something you can use in competitive fighter single player though since the core game is too different.

SCII weapon master mode is fine enough but I think the best thing about it is you get to play SCII and SCII is terrific. I think entering tournaments in 4Evo's quest mode is a lot more gratifying, especially since the objective based stuff is supplemental rather than required, unlike in weapon master. I also feel that character customization is better than buying weapons, and that the objectives in 4Evo are more obviously teaching you how to play the game correctly.

Always loved Soul Blade/Edge's Edge Master mode. Now that I think about it, Edge and Calibur 1-3 handled the quest modes quite well.

Edit: OMG the music in Edge. I'm tempted to look for it in PSN.

Isn't God Hand pretty much a single player fighting game? I've been very curious about that game recently and even though you could categorize it as a brawler, the focus seems more on 1:1 combat.

(unless I misunderstood the thread and we're exclusively talking about fighting games.)

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Subspace Emissary. That's easily the most epic fighting game story mode. It's the fighting game I've played the most by myself.

Should have been 1st post, but 2 in the first 10 is good enough. MKX might come close to SP offering, but VF gets the nod on the basis of originality and being the better fighter :)

Technically it was. I just didn't specify Quest Mode, in the same way I didn't specify Story Mode for Mortal Kombat. :p

I have vague memories of a PC fighter where you controlled robots, and could modify them between fights, in such a way that put me in mind of Armored Core. The actual fighting mechanics were atrocious (Though I'm pretty sure I only played in on a keyboard), but the idea of AC's granularity brought to a fighter has always stuck with me.

You're thinking of One Must Fall 2097's tournament mode, and it's awesome.

Just here to echo Virtua Fighter 4:Evo quest mode. It's disappointing it's not really been replicated by other series. I'd love something similar in Street Fighter.

Not interested in those games that have modes where the gameplay isn't a one on one fight as that not why I bought the game. So no interest in those weird Tekken side modes.

How is Quest Mode in the retail version of Virtua Fighter 5? I never see it mentioned along VF4's

It's mostly the same thing. The AI of the CPU opponents is far less impressive, and easily cheesed, but it's still a lot of fun.

Virtua Fighter 4 Evo remains king tho.

warzard has a versus mode? i could've sworn it was coop only

BTW my answer is ggxx story mode where you get to play as and fight boss versions of chars. the reload Sol story mode branches are my favorite, especially the one where you play as boss sol vs boss ino, complete w special intro where he flips her off

i don't care for visual novel aspect of that stuff but the ingame shit they do is just plain fun to me

Soul Calibur 2 or 3. One of them had a huge SRPG adventure thingy, with leveling up and custom characters and all..

Persona 4 Arena and it's sequel

Fingers crossed for Persona 5 Arena

Eh I would say Weapon Master in SCII was better. P4A's story can really only be enjoyed be fans of the series not to mention theres barely any gameplay in it so you have sit through hours of cutscenes.

im going to be the only person who says this but I loved MK Deception's Konquest mode, running around the MK world with Shujinko as he ages from a kid to an old man, its what I always wanted.

It's just a tad bit too short.

I loved Adventure Mode and dreamed for years about getting a longer one with more representation... and then we got Subspace Emissary which was longer, and Smash Run which had more representation. So if we just mash them together...
