Ugliest games

Those are from dlc, right?
Are those unedited pictures?

Main game was ugly as hell sometimes
..

I agree. I said earlier in the thread... I think DS2 will age before any of the other games. The changes they made to the lighting (No, not the E3 stuff people harp on about) and game engine from DS1 make everything looks sickly and horrible.

I find Fallout 4 pretty ugly. Had the misfortune of being released after The Witcher 3 and it's creaky old engine is put to shame. I'm still playing the game but find it difficult to enjoy. It's just not great on PS4.

wha..what?

Virtual Hydlide was and still is a technical showcase for the Saturn. I was blown away by the realism and open world approach. sprite-based or not

Daikatana on N64 is probably the ugliest N64 game but, boy, I loved it. it also ran pretty good.

Deadly Premonition takes this for me. I was laughing my ass off when I first drove the car around and saw the grass in town.

It is... Not a looker!

GTA V is a truly ugly game. The satire is of the lowest, more surface and juvenile quality and the misanthropic pervasive misogyny and stereotyping isn't clever. As GS said in their review, the game is "politically muddled and profoundly misogynistic." It's telling that gamers were so offended by this review that a petition was made to request the reviewer be fired. Blegh. The game is the definition of hateful fiction.

My later replies to avoid confusion:

Brilliant idea talking 'ugly' in terms of meaning rather than looks. Well done.

I take a lot of issue with GTAV's writing, but I didn't think what you consider an issue was problematic. I very much disagreed with GameSpot's review. Men and women are equally objectified and mistreated in the game, with intentionally heinous characters like Trevor sexually and emotionally abusing men as often as (in fact more so than) women. Nothing was sacred.

The only exception, which I personally never saw but read about - which did seem really bad - was the transvestite or transgender 'drag queen prostitutes'. And all the ambient dialogue around them. That seemed poorly handled and I couldn't see any equality there. It seemed very biased against them.

Albedo: Eyes from Outer Space looks like someone directly fucked with my eyesight using random GIMP color filters.

Seeing it in motion is a whole other story.

holy shit, is Dark Souls a Virtual Hydlide ripoff? looks very similar, they even copied the framepacing it seems.

also fucking l-o-l at the GTAV discussion, i want my 3 minutes back from reading that dumb Telegraph article..

Even among the legions of shitty Mortal Kombat clones this game looks terrible. It looks even worse in motion, with hilariously choppy animation. Look at this shit.

Consortium. What were they thinking, jesus.

Seriously, the Souls games do not belong in the same thread...

Sorry guys, but this (go full res)...

...does not look good for a current-gen release. It looks bad...REALLY blurry textures, bad IQ/aliasing..etc.

Perhaps the PC build has much higher quality assets? One may like the art direction, or the world design, but it's not pretty if you get close to any of it. TLoU and Gears 3 looks better.

"We do not have infinite money so we might as well make do with the best we can muster"

It was probably more along the lines of "Who needs an art director?"

They could have made it look like a 1995 game, and I'd be good with it as long as it had a cohesive artstyle. But they didn't and it doesn't, and every time I try to play it I stop an hour in because I can't stand the visuals. Sorry.

it's one of the better looking games i played on PC in awhile. expected a bit more from a current gen dark souls but it's a looker in my book.

the only souls game that looked kind of lackluster was DS2. still a pretty game but some of the geometry and lighting really clash in places

Unless you're dealing with an unreasonably egotistical person, most artists are acutely aware of their own shortcomings far beyond almost anything anyone else can say

Do not assume that everyone doing crappy work is automatically an asshole

It's silly to complain about faces not having great quality when RIGHT up close - in a game with a 3rd person camera. You only get that view of ANY characters face when you do camera gymnastics to specifically look very close. Also idk where you got that 3rd screenshot (maybe XONE version?) but that definitely isn't what my game looks like.

This is the Dark Souls III assets PC players get.

I don't know what it is, but there's definitely something wrong with the DS3 faces.

Like I can make this great looking character in the character creator. Looks fine at all angles up close. I take him in-game and he looks completely inhuman under certain lighting conditions (notably, he looks awful in the main shrine).

The previous Souls games have had uncanny valley similar problems, but I honestly think it's the worst in DS3 (and I was just watching my friend play DS1 last night, so I don't think it's just nostalgia goggles). At the very least, it hasn't gotten any better over the course of 3 games + Bloodborne, which is disappointing.

I wouldn't call the game itself ugly by any means, but it deserves mention for the faces alone.

Brutal Legend, and basically all the shit that double fine puts out. The art direction is a joke.

Wait, you're saying Broken Age is ugly? I really have no idea how you can think that. The visuals are easily the strongest part of BA.

This abomination. Revolution 60.
Yeah, Revolution 60 is hideous. Can't believe a game with visuals like this came out only two years ago.

And "it's a phone game" isn't an excuse. There are iOS games like Monument Valley and the Infinity Blade series that look great. This looks like someone decided to take the visual aesthetic from 1997 PS1 era CG cutscenes and make a whole game out of it.

The artwork for BA looks like it was done by a professional, but that's the only nice thing I can say about it. I think the dainty lollipop-head aesthetic is ugly... I don't expect all art to have an original style, but this style just doesn't appeal to me.

Well, I mean, this was 1990, dude. You're literally looking at one of the first commercial games to ever use polygonal 3D graphics. This was before Quake, before Doom, before even Wolfenstein 3D.

You might as well be complaining that Metropolis sucks because it's a black and white silent movie.

zelda_wallpaper___twilight_princess_by_celticcataphract-d4j9n7h.png

I liked the game somewhat but my god... Like 99 percent of the character's are so ugly and just look... Off for lack of a better word.. I wonder if I'm the only one who feels this way...

That's one of my favorite things about Zelda. Bizarre and weird looking NPCs. Even OoT had them.

I really hope Zelda NX doubles down on this.

Let's pretend for just a moment that the GTA comment wasn't wildly off-topic for this thread.

Having played GTA III, VC, SA, IV but not V (yet), I have a pretty good idea of the series' sense of humor (although you're welcome to find it unfunny—I certainly have at times).

Over the years people have criticized GTA for various things—too violent, too sexist, etc. But being inappropriate, rude, immature, and reckless has always been the whole point of GTA. Many people find it entertaining to indulge in this imaginary world of horrible people doing horrible things. I'm well aware of the "ugliness" of GTA, but the ugliness within the games has value as entertainment.

That doesn't mean I'm OK with everything GTA does. But ultimately, we're all bothered by different things depending on our backgrounds and experiences. A joke that one person can laugh at will deeply offend another.

That doesn't mean those jokes are ugly, nor does it mean the jokes are good. But making blanket statements like "GTA is ugly" really only does two things:

  1. People who already agree with you will still agree
  2. People who disagree with you will feel like you're attacking their personal character for liking the thing you dislike

Speaking generally, whether or not you intend to attack someone's character, if the other person feels like you're attacking them, then you're probably not going to convince them of anything.

Depends on which version you played.

That picture shows Runescape V1 aka classic.

Correct, 1 and 2 was a Java based game in your browser. Version 3 runs in HTML5.
To expand on this post. It made me curious about the game and logged in to my old account again. Seems that Jagex has created a C++ client for the game.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Pretty much every PS1 game looks dog rough these days.

For fully-3D games, Threads of Fate, Einhander, Vagrant Story hold up damn well even today. 2D games/prerendered backgrounds you have a ton of great looking titles, too, that didn't age.

Playing Morrowind when it was released, that shit was really immersive. The intense detail of it's large open world was completely unmatched at the time.

DLC except the last one. Not edited, just PC screenshots.

The game has some unflattering environments, such as Harvest Valley (my least favourite) and Shaded Woods. Most of the time, though, it looks fine, even great, especially on PC and PS4. And even the least flattering areas are still nowhere near the same caliber as some of the truly hideous stuff posted in the thread. It's completely ridiculous to include this game in the same thread. DS1 and Demon's Souls had some unflattering-looking areas too, after all.

Sorry guys, but this (go full res)...

Ridiculous. Any game can have screenshots with unflattering angles, this doesn't make the game ugly. I can move around the camera in TLoU to focus on some low-res textures or some clipping geometry too. Who cares? That's not representative of how the game looks when you play it normally. Dark Souls 3 has tons of absolutely gorgeous areas, monsters, armours, etc. and some of the vistas are really breathtaking. To call the game ugly because of a few low-res textures and some aliasing is absolutely preposterous.

"It's not pretty if you get close to any of it" applies to pretty much every game ever. Honestly, I've seen some really unflattering shots of the... Uncharted 4 multiplayer, of all games. But I'm not about to declare the game ugly because that would frankly be completely idiotic and out of touch.
