Giant Bomb: PS4.5 / PS4K is codenamed NEO, more info

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
So its either sell your current PS4 to get the NEO or those that dont have a PS4 can either get the NEO or get the PS4 at hopefully $250-$299.

Make the PS4 $200 Sony to get that PS2 momentum going.

Actually this would be just as close to a 290X as Xbox One is to PS4 & people claimed that the PS4 wasn't much powerful as the Xbox one & said you wouldn't be able to see much of a difference.

So what you're saying is that the Neo is noticeably worse than the 290X; because it's clear there is a disparity between the PS4 and X1.

Closed boxed hardware, better interconnectivity between CPU and RAM, GPGPU, and lets not forget that the 390 beats the 970 in many games, especially of late with driver upgrades, dx12 et al.

Bringing in the 390 doesn't do much if this GPU isn't as good.

Fair point. Change devs to pubs, then.

Sony seems very confident that publishers will willingly extend themselves for an upgraded console, and have to spend additional resources creating two different modes for each game.

Depends on the way Sony have updated the SDK to make the Neo Mode straightforward to incorporate into the development process.

If it'll require months of extra work, devs/pubs will chafe at it being a requirement.

If it's a relatively simple add-on that amounts to amending performance parameters like AA, FPS to fit within the Neo's spec and is something that can be built into the existing development pipeline with minimal fuss I can't see it being an issue.

Can anyone explain this in Dragonball Z terms for me?

It sound huge gap on paper but ultimately we still play the same games on both machine, 1.3TF going to hold back your 4.2TF full potential.

Sure, assets will reamin...similar. But there is some underselling going on here.

Image quality difference and effects used between the two will be immediately noticeable. We are dealing with a GPU that is nearly a full 3x the performance of the Xbone.

That is absolutely significant.

So the magical coding to the metal !!!$_/#!!! Is back now? Common I thought we left that nonsense in the past along with suppa chargef architecture. Also this ain't no 390x.

I will say this definitely alleviates my concerns and if people wanna pay more for incremental performance increases that's all good because I know some people really care about getting the best in that respect. I really don't care as long as I'm not missing out on features/content and it seems that won't happen here. Makes the wait for the PS5 a lot more palatable. 4K will probably also be a lot cheaper/ubiquitous by then.

This isn't a 390 either TBH. The 390 is what? 5.1+ TF? To be fair closed box hardware does help with both development and testing/QA but it's not like graphics magically get better though across all games. The Frostbites/AnvilNexts/Snowdrops will be the same.

Yeah right, Hyrule Warriors, Xenoblade Chronicles, and SNES emulator exclusive say no. Why would Nintendo alienate million of its old user base?

Ports are cheap, so it's not a horribly risky proposition to make one that only runs on the niche/"premium" SKU of a popular platform. An original title that pulls the same shit (and of course it would have to be an original title, because unlike with the 3DS games that target specs so high they can't run on the base PS4 don't really exist) is an entirely different ball game. The money required to produce a game that pushes the envelope of the base PS4 is high enough to be a risky proposition as is; making one that *only* runs on a platform that is pretty much guaranteed to sell a fraction the amount (or runs on the old SKU but basically isn't worth playing on that one) is pretty much suicide, just like how making a AAA PC exclusive game with a minimum spec of a $300+ GPU would be suicide.

Someone said that even though PS4 GPU has 32 ROPs (Render output units), that 1.84 TFlops is really not enough to take advantage of them. At least with PS4K / NEO, assuming its GPU has the same amount of ROPs, the icompute performance won't be lacking. Current PS4 games that run at a solid 30fps, to potentially run at 60fps, assuming no resolution or graphic fidelity increases. That is, IF some devs offer updates for certain games -given that it would never automatically happen with already-released PS4 games.

I think it's about a 970, don't forget this is closed hardware and also better hardware for GPGPU with more CU's and ROPS. The closed hardware architecture also means quicker access to the CPU and memory which have both been upgraded outside the GPU. In essence the console will run much faster. I'm pretty sure such a console will also sport many upgrades we don't know of yet, albeit (smaller ones) like L3 cache and improvements to said GPU-CPU-MEM pipelines.

What did you want? an i7 6700k with a 980ti?

On paper, it's a 280X+. This gen the optimization gap has dropped a lot and will drop a lot more with DX12 and Vulkan. There's a 30-40% gap here; it won't making all of that up.

When games on "weak" hardware stop looking like Uncharted 4, we can stop bringing it up.

I think the "closed box" thing needs to be walked back a bit. Not that there aren't advantages, but it's not the massive scalar some people are implying. Most console games are not extensively hand-tuned with super low-level APIs, and Digital Foundry's i3/750Ti machine is still keeping up with PS4 and XB1 ridiculously well for a lot of modern games. What's that tell us?

Heck, Durante himself said a GTX970 is a bit more than twice the speed of the PS4 on paper, and accordingly it runs PC games a bit more than twice as well for most setups.

Not a huge leap. Not even a big one. This seems more for assisting with VR games.

You have to look at it in context. Look at what the PS4 can do now...then look at what the PS4K can do with the same parameters and the same game design standards. This is not a new gen, its the same gen...the impacts of this hardware on 8th gen games superficially will be significant.

This is essentially a PS2 to OG Xbox level conversion in the same gen focusing specifically on framerate, IQ and everything in between.

If everything in this leak is true, a lot of my concerns have been alleviated really. And that's if.

I was looking to upgrade cause my PS4 is very loud, but not sure how I feel about incremental upgrade refreshes. This generation my last longer than the last one. 😩

Yeah, but the 970 is behind the 390 which the PS4k GPU is also.

Yeah that still exists and it's true, that's why PC had to bring DX12 and Vulcan to get things closer on their end, but there's still a divide if the dev is capable enough to push closed box hardware. Obviously, not the forte of multiplat devs. E.G......How many multiplat devs have made use of GPGPU on these consoles or have bothered optimizing their games properly. That's the general gist.

I meant 380x oc not 280. Definitely not outperforming a 970 as he claimed.

We can't even begin to have that discussion because AMD GPU's and Nvidia GPU's are nothing alike. On top of all this- this GPU probably has a ton of customizations that Sony has been cuing developers in on for the last three years. Don't expect this just to just be some vanilla 380X thrown into a box because NewEgg had a sale.

Future OTs for PS4 games will be like this:

"Here's PS4 screenshots"

and....

"Here's PS4K screenshots"

"CAN YA SEE THE DIFFERENCE?"

Why are we thinking this is a new GPU in the 300 family? I would have thought it was still based on the Sea islands GPU architecture but with double the CU's for maximum compatibility

You mean Fry's. That's where the best deals are.

This is good news. I'll have my wallet ready. Time for my 4k TV to flex its muscles

If NX is more powerful than OG PS4, I guess a lot of people, myself included, would likely switch to NX for their multiplatform needs. If NEO is more powerful than NX, that at least "stops the bleeding". I guess Sony recognizes that their power advantage is significant in an age where all consoles are pretty much the same, and first party output is lacking all around.

Power wasn't the reason why Sony won with the PS4.

This revision isn't being released to target 1080p. It's about running games at a higher resolution for people with 4k sets. So on ps4 devs will still target 1080p and for Neo they'll use the same frame rate and effects but at 1440p or more.

Most likely this.

There may be a better question to ask in all of this. Will developers become even more careless and release games that are more broken because they feel superior hardware will take care of some of the issues that they didn't bother to fix?

This is pretty big IMO. I'd never thought we'd have a 4TFlop console in 2016 and now its possible.

In the context of DiY PCs with unlimited options for casing and cooling and lumbering GPUs this may not be noteworthy. But in the context of consumer hardware design this is definitely a huge step forward.
