Where would gorillas stand in the pecking order? Those things terrify the shit out of me and I know they can wreck shit.

If you think abut it, the Lion can't actually kill the bear with its signature asphyxiation move because they would get right between the bear's paws and be done for. Unless the lion can learn another way to kill things bigger than them, then the bear will win every time if it is to the death.

Wait, wait, wait.

Tigers are actually bigger than lions? Wha? When did this happen??

Realistically these things always come down to the circumstances. Particularly awareness and aggression. Bears are much more timid in general, and would probably be more likely to flee, while big cats tend to be more aggressive. Cats are also more agile and are much stealthier hunters. So a lion or a tiger would be much more effective at hunting a bear than vice versa. However grizzlies are substantially more powerful. If a grizzly was aware and willing to engage, it would be no contest. So yeah, it's all about circumstance.

I think I watched some video like 10 years ago that some idiot I knew at the time linked me to...anyways it was like a lion (I think) vs grizzly in a big zoo like cage and I presume was filmed in like China.

I don't know why I actually even clicked play on the video...I watched like a minute of it before I turned it off in disgust because it was really gross and the 2 animals were clearly confused and did not want to be battling each other. whoever stages shit like that should be put in the worst prison on earth.

You put up a good case, but lions tend to work better as a team.
When it comes to one vs one, a bear would come up on top the majority of the time.
A lion will struggle to get past a bear's thick hide to make quick kill.

On average, they're very similar in size. Lions tend to stand taller at the shoulder, while tigers are longer. Keep in mind that's an average though and tigers have considerably more variability in their sizes than lions - the heaviest tigers outweigh the heaviest lions, while the smallest tigers (Sumatran tigers) are smaller than the smallest lions.

I am honestly surprised someone didn't test this out in the 1900's and write about it. Back then stuff like animals fighting to the death was considered a gentleman's sport

Gorilla would lose to both, or at best tie in the case of a lion (and that would be extremely unlikely, probably only a young lion vs. an exceptional silverback). Gorillas may be hunted by leopards (which are quite a bit smaller and less powerful than lions, whom they avoid), though it's not super well documented. There is a case of a silverback and a leopard killing each other however, which indicates a silverback probably wouldn't fair well against even larger predators. And 1:1 with a grizzly it would be not contest at all. An exceptionally large silverback is 6 foot tall and 500 lbs. Piddling by grizzly standards. And grizzlies and gorillas are vaguely similar in how they move and fight, so a gorilla doesn't have any real locomotive or strategic advantage like big cats. Best bet a gorilla would have would be to scare the bear off. That at least is actually pretty reasonable.

Siberian and Bengal tigers are bigger than lions. Especially comparing females, since Male lions are oversized compared to most male cats. Even comparing males, Siberian tigers average about 100 lbs heavier.

I'm sure a Kodiak Bear can take out a Siberian Tiger.

The Russian brown bears that overlap with Siberian tigers are about the same size as Kodiaks.

Tigers can scale a bear's back, and are strong enough to sever their neck vertebrae with their teeth.

Of course, big bears can kill tigers too. The ambush makes a big difference.

That's why I give the bear an advantage if it's aware. If it's at all prepared, yeah. A bear would be an absolute force. Though while lions may be better pack hunters, I think if one was able to maintain surprise it would have enough of an upper hand to win more often than not. Or at the very least, inflict mortal wounds. Either way it probably wouldn't be good for the bear.

Edit: Don't forget, bears can be pretty reluctant fighters (honestly, more often than not they're massive, terrifying pussies). Hesitation could probably cost a bear.
