Mirror's Edge: Catalyst Closed Beta Thread | Didn't Get An Email? Keep Faith

I was looking at the last developer diary and I found the unlocked full map

8gF2Pt.jpg

It seems that half of the full map is in the Beta.

Do we know if this is full? If it is, it's a bit dissapointingly small. Although, I suppose it could also be a sign that the game is going to have more off-map story missions, which would be great.

But, I'd assumed the entire pictured city would eventually become explorable--why show it, otherwise? Also, there's the mysterious "underground" map.

Yeah, I think that all of the city that appears as a 3D model on the map is going to be explorable. Otherwise... why bother?

Well I decide to give this beta another shot and I get a mission where combat is literally forced on me in ways it never was in the original game.

I'm done with this shit.

Holy hell did they not give faith one woman friend? it may not mean much to some but I really miss having Celeste around in ME even though she was a big ol turn coat. For some reason this is bugging the crap out of me.

Faith doesn't seem to have much in the way of friends so far. Noah, and I guess Nomad.

Celeste is in the game just not in the beta.

The recordings I found in the beta have me intrigued. Quite a good amount of lore in there. Although I can imagine people will be angry that it happens off-screen.

The combat takes all of 30 seconds, being generous. Whether or not you want to play is obviously your prerogative, but giving up for this reason is silly.

Not saying this necessarily applies to you, but I feel like a lot of people in this thread are being negative because it's fun to hate EA. Not necessarily consciously.

I don't think this game is perfect (*cough*XP-Unlocks*cough*), but I do think that DICE has created something really special. It's certainly a heck of a lot more risky/innovative than 90% of the AAA space.

Is there more information to this? Never heard of it before now.

Someone on gaf was nice enough to give me a code for PS4. This game taking long as hell to download and I am on wired. This normal?

This.

I am still shocked that a new Mirrors Edge exists.

Try pausing and resuming the download.

On the map screen, there's some text that says something to the effect of "press [insert button I can't remember] to view underground"

Press said button, and the map changes to show a whole lot of nothing... which I'm assuming means there will be something there in the full game.

Oh no no, it's there. It's in the construction zone.

No custom keybinds and I'm pretty sure the game has a memory leak. Not a good sign.

It's so odd for a DICE game not to feature custom keybinds. The Battlefield series is typically overflowing with keybind options for keyboards, mice, gamepads, and even joysticks. Hell, you could use any combination of those if you really felt like it.

Mirror's Edge? You've got two control presets, and they're for gamepad users. Bizarre.

Disappointing. So much open world tat and a tacked on upgrade system, as well as mandatory combat in missions.

And also I already hate all of the characters. Bunch of techno hipsters with their sarcasm and being dicks.

And why is every named thing in camel case. What sort of term is outCaste. Just fucking say outcast.

I'd wait until the final version to see if that would be the full map as well too. Plus there should be indoor areas aside from the underground stuff as well too I'd imagine.

You sure do like to complain a lot :/ most of your posts in the SFV OT were complaining too.

Like there are a significant number of issues with that game and some with this as well but I don't think forced combat is one of them, as another poster mentioned it really doesn't take very much time and you'll be back to running in no time. I don't know why you'd give up on a game completely just because of one small bit.

There is definitely a memory leak, happens on consoles too. If you go to one half of the city then double back, through the safe house then onto the other side of the city, the game stutters hugely and runs at what looks like 30-40fps.

I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that the full game will feature a lot of combat, hell it's got the biggest section in the upgrade menu. The momentum combat is ok but going hand-to-hand is dull as hell. Can't wait for the inevitable sentinel fights that will take five minutes.

Most of the stuff seems to be just trying to forcefully appear to the mainstream trends like the pointless leveling up and a hollow open world. Hell, even the small changes they made to the movement made it feel not as good as the original. You reach top speed almost immediately, all of the effects feel diminished and muted which also make Faith feel more lighter, which in my opinion is not as good as the weightier original with a lot of head bob and other effects. Same thing with the sounds, they were a lot meatier before.

Lastly the combat was never the high point, nor the main focus of the game so i don't get why they decided to knuckle down on it, combat was usually over in a counter or a hit or two in the first one and now even in the beta they throw way more enemies at you with way more health than they used to, i can only imagine what happens if you don't invest points in dealing more damage late in the game.

I'm sure that people who weren't big fans of the original or barely played it will love this one but most of the stuff i liked from the first game wasn't in the beta. Also, if you cannot skip cutscenes in the final product it's going to be hell to suffer through those cutscenes.

A dev confirmed on a stream that custom keybinds will be in the final game. He even said that the beta's default controls are different than in newer builds.

Also confirmed that cutscenes will be skippable in the final release.

And FWIW, I was a huge fan of the first game (completed all in-game level speedruns and 3-starred all the trials... on both PS3 and PC) and I really enjoy the beta. I did initially get thrown off by the differences in Faith's handling and animations and was worried that they might have streamlined away your level of control. But now that I've sunk some hours into running around the open world, the races, etc. I really like how the movement feels and many of the adjustments and intricacies that you could pull off from the previous game are still there.

I'm sure it will feature too much combat but in this beta a lot of it is skippable, and you can really speed things up if you use the environment. It's boring but it's quick, and once you get past it it's smooth sailing again.

This is all basically correct, but I still like Catalyst.

I found maybe? shit tier speedrun tech if it somehow makes it in from this beta to the full game. Hitting crouch/slide/whatever at a certain moment when trying to climb a wall that's just a lil too tall results in you somehow climbing up on it. My results on it are semi inconsistent though. I can get it work more on the side of one wall, but not as much on the other side. It's a little weird.

Then I did more testing. It seems the parts where I hit it more successfully is because there's a lip that made the window to hit Crouch much wider. I think the window to hit crouch is much smaller the bigger the distance even if it's what, the size from the bottom of faith's foot to her ankle? I can reliably hit crouch and climb up on a closer gap, but when it's just a little farther away it's much harder.

It's a weird bug.

It's not a bug, it's called Coiling. That's how it has always worked

Okay so I was very hyped for this game. But 30 minutes through the beta so far and I'm still running around inside closed off shit. Doesnt really feel like mirrors edge...

Am I still just in some linear tutorial area? Should I keep playing?

Oh no

Am I big, dumb idiot?

After messing around with it again I guess I probably am. I just didn't know coiling could be used in that way. Since the climb is immediate I also couldn't see the coil animation. I know coiling obviously raises your legs and hitbox to make it over obstacles, but I didn't know it could be used against walls to actually give you more height to actually be able to pull yourself up.

I didn't mean it in an elitist way or anything like that, more like a background since nobody who didn't touch the original is going to give to shits about how it felt and even that is subjective as hell. Actually Before the beta i was thinking completely wrong how the controls worked and they were a lot closer to the first one than i thought. But nothing in the game to me is better than it was. I will probably buy it at some point so that i can get my thoughts on the final product but i just don't like almost any of the design choices in the beta. Good thing that you can skip the cutscenes.

Hmm played for an hour, the running and environments are great but the combat is still pretty dull. Also, does this play better with a controller? KB+M feels a bit awkward.

Did the new update fix the long load times or is it just me?

I'm liking the game so far. I almost want to stop playing but at the same time it's not like the game comes out in a couple weeks so I may as well finish the beta.

Obviously, I hate the XP, I've said that several times. But the open world works really well here because of how much fun movement is. The original ME was a game about moving from point A to point B across a series of strewn-together rooftops. Put that into an open world, and you've taken the main complaint about open world games—that it's just a bunch of walking between locations—and turned it into a main gameplay asset.

The other changes I'm pretty sure were done in the name of accessibility, and I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. I know a lot of people who simply couldn't get into Mirror's Edge 2008. Hopefully they'll be able to play this time.

And despite these changes, I just don't think the controls are that different. On Saturday evening, after playing the Beta for about two hours, I decided to load up the original game and run through some chapters. What struck me wasn't how different the old game was, but how similar it felt. They've tweaked minor things, but nothing more.

I don't understand this at all. Do you remember the freaking ship level in Mirror's Edge 2008? There were guys with guns everywhere. Yeah, I suppose they technically had less health in that they could be brought down with one hit, but timing that hit properly could take a lot of tries, and if you didn't have any Focus saved up, or you mistimed its deployment, you were essentially screwed. Yes, I know it was possible to avoid all combat in that game, but doing so was really, really difficult.

In comparison, combat in this game is both infrequent and over quickly. And with obvious exceptions, it can be avoided fairly easily.

So I'm trying to do this delivery mission that is timed at like 42 seconds, but when I get to the end I have about 5-7 seconds left and literally no idea where I'm supposed to actually go to finish the run. It's so dumb, like runner's vision just quits there and I'm left spinning around trying to figure out where the fuck to go.

Edit: Found it, but wow Runner's Vision totally lied to me.

Weren't the ship enemies SWAT soldiers? Those took quite the beating before going down.

Where is it? I think I know which one you're talking about and I have the same problem. Drove me crazy last night. I'm assuming it's a glitch because if not...

People are absolutely tearing this game to shreds on the official Mirror's Edge beta forums. Seriously, just pages upon pages of bitching, whining, and nitpicking -- everyone is telling Dice to delay the game to do this, do that.

It's crazy man.

Near the end, the runner's vision will have you take a sharp right that leads you to some chick standing around giving you lip. Instead of going right just go straight ahead and climb up around there.

Aaaand I just finished another glitched delivery mission. I accidentally found the goal because I started running around looking for a shortcut because I kept running out of time. Man I hope this is just beta issues and not indicative of the final game, because this is not ready for release with issues like this.

I was pretty hyped, but when those beta previews came i was scared.

Played the beta, it was one of the highlights of 2016... For being so terrible.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst (beta, but some of this stuff should be in the final game too) is generic, lifeless, ugly as hell (os PS4) and absolutely shameful.

It's an AMAZING concept with a great first game (mostly mechanics), but EA made a mess trying to "modernize it" to and "open world rpg-ish style".

I'm really, really disappointed.
