Not sure how i feel about it. If they can use it to gateway people towards NX versions later on (speaking generally about Animal Crossing) then i guess it's a good thing. If it means it will be a mobile game from now on, i don't like it.

Animal Crossing may be one of the few system selling games they have left, and i'm still a big fan of the idea of it replacing Warawara plaza on NXhome in some form.

But hopefully it means there is still a home console version coming that will work together with the mobile app.

I was thinking about this too. It could be a lot of fun! I'd just end up trying to collect all my favorite characters instead of actually playing the card game, I think.

The logo shown for this and Cipher are really different so I don't think it's a digital form of Cipher.

Maybe I misunderstood the press release, but aren't they calling it a roleplaying strategy game?

There's a certain amount of Japanese nonsense terminology being used there so I'm not 100% sure.

How is that nonsense terminology other than some words are swapped. Aren't we calling these kind of games SRPG (or TRPG)?

Two of their biggest IP that showed excellent growth the moment they went to handheld are perfect for this project.

I can totally see the Animal Crossing game being a Happy Home Designer type of spin-off while the Fire Emblem game could be a collection of the best maps in the series with a gatcha to recruit units from all the games in the series.

Exciting times.

A card game can be a roleplaying strategy game!

If this AC game doesn't have a full experience then Nintendo has really lost the plot.

I'm fine with "connections" to other games, but it needs to have the full experience regardless.

Anyway, i'm guessing i won't be playing any of these, since Miitomo won't work on my new phone (non-rooted). I'm guessing they will use the same ass-backwards protection that blocks a lot of non-rooted phones.

Yeah, they should just give away the full console experience of one of their million sellers on mobile. NX might be a smartphone after all.

"Offer the great value of" could feasibly means it's not a strategy RPG, but something different that offers "the same value".

I don't see why everyone is so excited about Nintendo making an AC game that might be full of grinding and microtranactions.

At least be apprehensive. AC is a wonderful series that could be ruined by $5 = 5000 bells nonsense.

$50 = 9,999 bells

Hah. This. How to make lots of money.

A lot of people and even the media wanted Nintendo to go mobile, now they are going in full force with their big IPs. I hope Nintendo will make a ton of money with tons of microtransactions.

And for the people who don't want them to go mobile, they will still make dedicated home/portable console games.

What did you see that made you a pessimist? Was that in Japan?

They just made too many stupid decisions that had us pulling our hair out in Europe - pricing, release schedules, hardware features, you name it. When you combined the weirdness of NCL decision making with the stupidity of NOE, even the most cheerful optimist would turn pessimist.

You don't know that.

Hopefully not for long. They're terrible at it these days. Should just focus on making games and toys, and leave the hardware to experts.

Man, the internet today is going to be full of people who "know better", criticizing Nintendo for not "simply" putting old console games on mobile.

Pandering to nostalgic nerds, the vast majority of which are either going to pirate it (the reality of Android) or complain loudly that they already bought it on virtual console and deserve it for free, is not going to keep Nintendo in business.

They need to target that next generation of gamer, with games suited for touch controls. That's going to keep the cash flowing. Cash they can use for development of their console games.

Makes sense. These two should translate very well into the mobile sphere. I hope they're like more traditional games modified for mobile instead of brand new games that play nothing like the originals but use the IPs because they can.

Like, I don't want a mobile FE card game. I just want a mobile FE game.

Nintendo really wants to milk as much as they can from Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing lately, huh.

Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but at least for Fire Emblem I never would have seen this coming years ago.

As long as we get a proper release on NX or whatever the next handheld is, I don't mind a mobile app. But I don't want one on my phone exclusively. Nintendo, plz.

You could easily call Tales of Link a role playing strategy game if you stretched definitions

That will not happen, Nintendo was clear from day one that these mobile projects are designed as 'tasters' for a casual audience that are supposed to generate interest in the main series on Nintendo's own hardware. They are not replacing the traditional games, they are more like companion apps.

I hope you are right. I will be mad as hell if the next system doesn't get Fire Emblem and mobile does.

Oh, this kinda stuff was totally out of the question before Awakening took off. FE was basically dead at that point, wasn't it? It's incredible how the series turned its fortunes around and became this quasi-massive thing that it is now.

Wasn't dead, but they were definitely scare tactics used. Basically, said if the game sold less than any other game in the series, it would be killed off.

FE was/is the otaku bait IP that Nintendo owned, and is a series that whales will whale on.

Regarding Animal Crossing, I hope it's more a "companion app" for the next AC game. Something close to Miitomo where you can transfer stuff to the real game. I've tried to play games on my phone...and...I...just...can't. Controls are serviceable at best. And everytime I play New Leaf I'm like "thank God there is no microtransactions..."

Regarding FE : Nah, I can't see them going mobile for the mainline games. The series just started to show some real potential in the west, so the mobile thing will help them make more people aware of the IP.

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I could see FE being a 'best of' type game with a throwaway story, repetitive and streamlined battles, gatcha pulls for all your favorite characters from all the FE titles, and an 'in game currency' to buy your way out of permadeath.

This fall.I missed that, that's pretty great.I can see Animal Crossing if done well being huge on mobile.Guess we will have to wait and see what type of game it is,companion app or full game.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own

while true this was under iwata's rule, who knows if kimishima agrees

Hopefully Nintendo doesn't get the idea that Animal Crossing or Fire Emblem "work" (read: get more money) better on mobile. Otherwise, these are sensible choices.

That makes me think this won't end up being a brand new game or anything. Won't be able to play off of people's love for popular characters as much then, though I could totally see super popular characters available for purchase though, like how SE does their FF mobile games (and kinda like how Nintendo does with Amiibo and some FE DLC).

I just hope the core gameplay is mostly the same. Like I said, I have no interest in an FE card game or puzzle game or anything that isn't a tactical RPG.
