Does UC4 do the annoying thing that the old ones did, whereby you can't do Crushing (or whatever it's called now) unless you've done hard first? Wouldn't mind doing normal and then crushing but I'm not doing normal > hard > crushing.

Moderate (Normal, middle difficulty) is enough to unlock Crushing.

I've played a few encounters on Hard and you can still melee and such, you can't just rush towards an enemy that is aware of your presence.

and frankly, you shouldn't be able to. If you wanna rush somebody, put a bullet in them on the way so they can flinch and you safely start a combo.

I'd argue just the opposite, that Hard mode forces you to be better utilize all the mechanics. You have to use those grenades, you have to prioritize enemies and better weapon drops to use on them, you have to know the environments, you have to stealth to take out SOME of the guards, you have to use the right weapon at the right time(snipers and explosives at a distance, pisotla/shotgun/sub-machine guns up close), you have to take advantage of whenever your NPC parter grabs a goon, you have to use cover and be careful of it being destroyed, you have to utilize your mobility to avoid gunfire, you have to be smart about your melees or rope swings...its mechanically the sharpest Uncharted yet, so play on a difficulty where you need to use them right.

Oh damn, I'm so easy to manipulate...

One question - what's the ratio of gunfights and action to forced walking sections? And are the puzzles eyerollingly unfun? I'm mainly asking this for future play throughs

Either way, you can take the difficulty back down to Moderate at any time if you're not having a good time

I just know, that for me and my particular taste, and in a game where combat is actually kinda sparsely deployed, I want those encounters to be challenging, satisfying, to the point where I felt I got everything I could out of that fight. I intelligently utilized the many options available to me.

If I had to make up an arbitrary number, maybe 1/4 is gun combat action versus 3/4 everything else (until the later chapters).

Technically not many forced walking sections, though.

Puzzles are clever. Once you figure them out you can blaze through in replays I think.

By drastically reducing the number of combat scenarios in between 1-2 hours of quiet exploration.

Wasn't a fan of that. The combat here is so good that they should have put in more of it in.

Uncharted is now more about the adventure, which in my books is a-ok.

To be honest, after 4, I could see an Uncharted game with zero combat working. And maybe being better.

I will never find a way to agree with this opinion lol

Even if I agree with you, I've played the original Tomb Raider on release, that game had very few enemies and only three or four enemy human beings. Still I was blown away by that game... it's almost crazy thinking about that today.

You still had weapons and animals to fight against though, but it wasn't anything like games from today.

Tomb Raider 1 is basically that game, and that's one of the best games of all-time.

You shoot like 10 people in that game maybe? Lots more animals, granted, but still.

Anyway it will never happen, but it could, and I wish it would!

Edit:

Woah, get out of my head!

That's creepy.

Because you have to deal with the real enemy thourghout the game: the control

This is why my first play through will be on hard. The previous Uncharteds forced me to constantly move and switch weapons. Hell I feel like I got in more melee fights on my crushing play through than any other difficulty. I want to actually feel a sense of danger and vulnerability that normal modes on the previous games didn't provide. Sure I could play on normal and feel like a action hero by doing a lot of cool risky maneuvers, but I also like to feel smart by utilizing the mechanics when the opportunity organically presents itself.

And Uncharted MP should be all about hugs. No shooting. Uncharted 5 - World Peace.

I never understood why people hate shooting that much in Uncharted games. I guess it must be because old school Tomb Raider games barely had any shooting at all.

I don't hate it. I think it feels great.

Doesn't mean a game without it wouldn't be great too.

To be fair lamp playtime is 20 hours which is the longest i have seen so far from anyone .
For others it's around 12 to 16 hours so pacing and combat might seem to come faster .
Depending on your play style .

I feel like you better apperciate all the weapons and mechanics and oppurtunies when there's a sense of threat. Like on Normal, using thhis grenade launcher or magnum might be fun, but its overkill. You didnt really need to do that. On Hard, where you can actually die, and enemies are deadly, you need to take every advantage, and it feels good to overcome odds.

Plus, you're feel more like Nathan Drake. You're not supposed to be an invincible action hero, just this scrappy Indiana Jones type making it up as you go along, getting along by the skin of your teeth, rather shoot a swordsman than risk a melee fight, taking every advantage he can cuz the odds are stacked against him.

So just thematically Hard feels right!

100% agreed!

Oh cmon, that's mean, 3D adventure games were still new at that time. I was a kid tho, didn't know what good controls were.

I guess this. I played it the first time 3 years ago so my experience with it was bad. I heard the anniversary edition was better but haven't played it yet

I wanted to replay all of the games before this, but havent. Now BB has this sale...

$15.99 with GCU.

Now I'm tempted to hold off on 4, but I don't think I can, lol

Tough choice since once you finish U4 it will be hard to go back the first three games

Off-topic I know, but I replayed TR1 a year or two ago and at first it seemed impossible, but after like an hour I could do the hardest platforming sections with ease. It's stiff, but it's really precise, and I appreciate that. Especially in a game which will punish you for small mistakes. I love the little details like needing to reach out to grab on to the ledge, nothing is automated.

The camera, on the other hand, is bullshit.

3 years ago!? no no, that's a terrible thing haha yeah of course, that game is pure trash today, even Anniversary has terrible controls now.

Yeah, I am playing through the collection now (up to chapter 12 on UC2) and while I am enjoying it quite a bit, I think it is best to get through the previous games first so they aren't marred by playing UC4 first. That is just my feel for it. It may work the other way around for you though.

I haven't had my early copy since Monday as I sold it to recoup the cost while waiting for me LiberTia version on Tuesday. It's been fucking killing waiting... and having already completed it once. That says something to me.

That's me. I'm so antsy to get to replay the game in full. I never replay games usually.
(I'm replaying encounters and tackling them in various ways and making videos of cool things.

Although for me it was I got an early copy and selling it on for the digital copy for the multiplayer.

Same, it's very rare I want to replay a game asap. When I get that feeling. I know it's a classic for me. Aka RE4, God of War 2, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of times, etc.

Come on those are two hugely different games. TR was about exploring and solving puzzles in a brand new 3D world which was still novel. Uncharted is nothing like that, it's a straight action adventure game, it does not work without combat. It's exploration and puzzles are brain dead compared to the old TR games.

Just bought this game without even playing the previous uncharted games, i loved and played the last of us though, am i good to go for U4? I literally know nothing about the character relationships..how are the early Impressions in this case?

I don't think it's necessary to play the others so that you get enjoyment out of this one, but I would definitely get the trilogy when finished. Three great games in one.

Its exploration is far better than the old tomb raider games. Puzzles is another matter.

No the environment itself was a puzzle in TR, how to get from point a to point b was part of the game. Uncharted it's all just there, there is no challenge, not much of a reward. It's just space you can run to. The game makes sure you can't get lost, it's platforming is mostly automatic and has no challenge. Uncharted 4 does not have good exploration, it's there to be there and be pretty which it is. And it allowed the game to have cool secret character moments but in terms of gameplay it's not even a factor.
