Indie Games 2016 [May] Lets play some Indies!

What is the word on Hotline Miami 2? Seems like folks enjoyed the original more when 2 was released, but not sure if that is still the case in retrospect.

On a somewhat related note, how about Olli Olli 1 vs. 2?

Both OlliOlli games are great, they are both worth playing. OlliOlli 2 adds things that make it tough to go back to the first one (manuals). It also looks really pretty. I still go back and play a bit every few days.

Speaking of Roll7, Not A Hero is a fantastic 2D action shooter. One of my faves from last year.

Thanks! I forgot to mention that I own both Olli games. I had trouble getting into first but I instantly enjoyed #2. I've gone back to 1 and actually enjoy it more than I had. They are fun games.

Didn't realize Roll7 did Not a Hero. Love that game.

Faeverse Alchemy, which is a game that I bought full price (for $27) 3 years and a half ago, is going to be free. I did not actually purchase the game but a lifetime subscription to the dev's games... and afterwards, no other game has been released because game development is long.

The dev released this statement:

I wanted to make FVA because it's the kind of game I want to play. Honestly the experience of releasing it on Steam has been depressing, demotivating. Early access on Steam was a mistake. There are still major updates I want to do for FVA, but there's also a thick cloud of gloom over the project that crushed the spirits for the team working on it from the start. Mistakes were made, and we're learning from them. Money is not worth the negativity for this project. Its audience is small, and I knew that going into it, but if it's free more people will be able to play and that's all I want. I said from the start it's not for everyone, not everyone is going to like this game. That's still a fact. If you don't like this game then please move on, ignore it, and let others who do like it enjoy it in peace.

I highly doubt Super Sausage Roll would meet the same fate, especially considering the reception and polish of the game, but it is still interesting to see how high price points could be a mistake for some games.

HM2 is a much harder game - your enjoyment of it honestly depends on how much you enjoy mechanically challenging yourself. I liked it but some of those levels were just too much. That's probably an understatement of how many times you'll die. HM1 is a more solid experience overall, HM2 has the better soundtrack.

A lot of people don't like it as much as the first, but I find it hard to choose between them, I think they're both great games.

Hotline Miami 2 is certainly harder, but yeah, it has a better soundtrack, and I feel it has a better finale than the first game.

All indies and what does TLLP mean?

That's the old game jam version. Considering they're heavily inspired by Flashback, I'm sure they'll take that into account for the full game

Yea I saw that which is why I found the movement to be weird. Here's hoping it's considered as I am a huge cinematic platform fan. There aren't that many of them.

It's not walking, but as you can see, way smoother

I just watched a video of the game jam version.

This is now on my radar thanks to you.
That game jam version is nothing compared to what they have planned for the full game. Besides the art and animation upgrade, they're making a multi-district open world with reactive crowds and open-ended gameplay

Has Eitr gotten a release date? I may have heard it but I've probably forgotten it.

...

Also Not A Hero is the kind of stupid indie game I love. I mean it means well and it's very well designed but the writing is just very stupid.

So anyone back any exciting indie kickstarters lately? I recently threw a bit of money at the Masquerada KS due to my enjoyment of the studies previous work and my general love of real time tactical RPGs.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
We counting Stellaris as indie?

We probably do.

Speaking of which, I just played it for a few hours. Its a bit of a weird one. I had the most fun exploring the game, especially in the beginning, compared to any other 4X game, but due to that, it also severely lacks a good progress curve upon replaying with menial tasks that take a long time to do.

I am having a blast my first match, but might only replay once an addon hits (unlike EU4 which i replayed a million times). Its a very engaging game, also for 4X veterans, as it has a lot of small details you can micromanage to get the best out of it, but I do feel the game needs 2-3 more addons to fill some holes.

Incredibly strong foundation though. I really hope they add enough onto it.

I'm patiently waiting for the Kickstarter for Whalenought's gritty cyberpunk cRPG Copper Dreams, which is supposed to start on Thursday

Also the medieval sci-fi aRPG Fabular

A bit late, but:

Hotline Miami 2 >>>>>>>> 1

I would completely disagree. Hotline Miami 2 feels really disjointed, and some of the game is outright poorly designed compared to 1.

This is from a HUGE HM fan. I got my code because I bought the figure on KS, also I'm pals with one of the devs.

I love the Swans, though.

My interest is peaked now
It's from the devs of Serpent in the Staglands, and they're shying away from the typical neon cyberpunk megatropolis for the more seedy gritty take. Basically tone and world is the kind of place that megacorps would build their multi-level cities on top of and leave to decay

I'm sorry, you're wrong. <3

The levels are incredible and give much more options than the first one, also, they are harder but continue completely fair. The story is much more interesting and the OST is more varied and bigger.

It's a better, more polished experience in every single aspect. Also, a sequel that doesn't play it safe and changes some things pretty drastically (like the masks)

From Above - PC
file

https://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=55828.0

From Above is a procedurally-generated planetary exploration game. You play as an engineer on a small planet (mother ship) travelling to different galaxies and exploring planets for resources. Resources are gathered using your trusty multi-purpose capsule-bot. These can then be used to upgrade your home planet. New buildings and factories will allow advancements in technology and weapons for exploring more challenging galaxies.

Here's my take on Starship Corporation, if anyone wants a pulse-check.

A grossly narcissistic self-quote...

Wanker said:
Starship Corporation wants you to iterate and tweak, running the simulations and finding the faults and foibles of player-designed vessels. It's a very canny procurement sim, distilled to a very small niche of games like Wings for the Baron, where building the tools for conflict - commercial or otherwise - is the conflict itself. A cautious recommendation.

Didn't want to start a thread and wasn't sure where else to run this by folks ...

Been trying to play a couple of older Vlambeer games on Win10 lately: Super Crate Box and Gun Godz.

I get the same corrupted file error for both when I launch. I had played SCB on Steam on Win7 so I'm thinking it is OS related. Can't find any remedies at Steam or Vlambeer site. (Never played Gun Godz before).

Any recommendations?
