Best Turrican game(s)?

It's about time I finally tried one of these. Which one(s) is/are top dog, gaf?

If it helps, I don't have a NES or SNES, but I do have a MD/Genesis and a Wii, so I can pretty much play any game except Super Turrican (NES version) or Super Turrican 2.

Turrican 1 and 2 on Amiga are the legends. Turrican 3 and the console versions are all kinda washed down for some reason, probably because Manfred Trenz left the team, if I remember correctly. His design was clearly missing in later games.

I think the Amiga roms for Turrican were distributed officially at some point, so that shouldn't be an issue. Can you still legally buy the Kickstart rom from an official reseller?

I'm going to be the edgy one and say that i prefer the music in Turrican 3/Mega Turrican. I think i also prefer it as a game too.

Turrican 2 has a more sprawling level design. It's less linear and allows for a lot of exploration. This is great for a game like Metroid, where you can save your progress and the game is big enough to compensate. But Turrican's gameplay is more traditional run n gun, like Contra. I feel like this type of gameplay is more benefited by smaller, more linear levels. I just don't feel like exploring in Turrican 2.

Oh, it's also graphically far superior as well.

WinUAE is a nightmare when it comes to configuring controls. The remap option is completely useless...
What am I doing wrong?
Also, the game is running like tore up ass, what gives? I'm following all the advice. About to give up and just go the PSP route...

The Amiga version is most likely running at 50fps (because 50hz monitors/TVs in Europe).

This is going to look like shit on standard 60hz displays.

I had all Turrican games on Amiga, and I think I played the Megadrive version.

T2 is probably the best, but wasn't Super Turrican also pretty good?

It looks good, but it's running very very poorly. Constant slowdowns, audio skips, unresponsive controls.

That's what i meant, sorry. The graphics will be fine but the frame rate will look like it skips and not smooth at all.

Unless you can lock your monitor/TV at 50hz (my TV does that).

Also, i'm not sure how well the game runs on a real Amiga. Whatever slowdowns it has there, they will be emulated so maybe you need to overclock the emulated 68000 CPU? I do the same with Metal Slug games for instance. They run a bit shitty on the stock 12Mhz 68000.

It's butter smooth on the original hardware but the problem even with a real Amiga is to have a screen today that can handle 50hz (or 49.999999hz or whatever it is) properly. I'm currently using a BenQ XL2411 and an Indivision card and it's running perfectly smooth but the purist in me still prefer the original Amiga monitor even though the screen is tiny.

Ok, finally have it running smoothly! The 1MB RAM config solved it and finally figured out how to remap the controls properly. Now it's perfect.
Damn this title theme is amazing! =O

I decided to revisit the game using WinUAE thanks to this thread. Mostly played the game boy version as a kid, but the nostalgia is strong.

Here's the .uae config I use for Turrican 2:
http://pastebin.com/TkqfVNwV
It's setup for integer scaled NTSC graphics, so it'll run at 60hz and everything'll be nice and sharp. Arrow keys and Z/X for move and fire respectively.
It uses one of the later Amiga models, which may help with the performance issues. What sort of spec PC are you trying to run this on?

For remapping, open the Remap / Test window for Port 2 and click 'Delete All'. You can then double-click on the empty line under each of the mapping headers (Joy2 Left, Joy2 Up, etc.) and press a key to bind it.

Gsync monitors solve this.

Damn, this game throws ALOT of pickups at you right at the very start, huh? European design...

Thanks man, but I ended up figuring it out. It's buttery smooth now. ^^

No worries, glad you got it sorted!

For sure. It's such a great representation of the Amiga era, back when nobody had written the book on 2D game design yet.
Untold hours playing the Universal Soldier rebrand of the Game Boy version has burned the secret box of goodies left of the stage 1 start point into my brain forever:
You'd never see shit like this these days.

All I ever have played is Super Turrican on Snes, and always felt like the game was a weird Contra/Metroid mashup. Anyone care to explain what it is I'm missing?

An Amiga and a copy of Turrican 2.
Funny. What is it that makes the game so special or standout? Nothing about the Snes game screamed out to me as anything more than "another 2d shooter". What are the defining aspects of the series that I should be excited about or makes it stand apart from something like Contra 3 or Gunstar Heroes? All I see here are adjectives describing feelings of playing Turrican 2 on Amiga. I'm asking for real details as to why I should care about the game. I'm not trying to be an ass...I honestly would like to know what's so cool about it, because I'm truly interested.

The soundtrack, for one. And the eclectic design, there's nothing quite like it.

I fought the first boss today. His hitbox is his tiny-ass head, and he has a massive gun. He jumps around like crazy and drops ceiling spikes on you. He's really tough.
Then you figure out that you can stand on the gun and pile lasers into his face, and it's awesome.

I dunno, might be the nostalgia, but it's just really solidly made. Old and weird, but with a real charm to it.

... well, that's stuck in my head for the next couplethree days

Hnng.

Turrican 2 was a gameplay as well as a technical marvel of its time. The scrolling, the big open levels, the running animation and weapon types, the sound fx and music.
All those giant ass boss sprites and just when you thought the 880kb disk couldn't possibly get more crammed with even one more byte, they throw a R-Type (Katakis) mini game at you which is awesome by itself. That section where your brakes are busted and it is constantly gaining more thrust until it reaches ludicrous speed and every junction you have to decide in a splitsecond only to see the 1 up down below while you chose the high road.

It was basically a super polished game. It had a fantastic soundtrack, it looked better than a good majority of Amiga games, and the gameplay was solid.
I can't really think of anything to compare it to gameplay wise in all honesty, but in comparison to other shooters at the time, they were all like Haze compared to Turrican 2's CoD4 basically.
