A guide to 2016's summer indie games

Since i only play on PS4 (my laptop is getting quite old), the summer selection is somewhat limited. The game i'm looking forward the most is Headlander at this point. I hope it's coming soon'ish. Rise & Shine is still looking fantastic aswell so i'm hoping my laptop will be able to handle that game. I just discovered Pan Pan (published by Might&Delight) and thought it looked interesting.

Also, thanks for doing these threads. Most of my playtime goes to smaller scale (indie) games these days (currently playing Oxenfree, Kick & Fennick and Art of Balance) so it's nice to see them listed in one thread.

Man thank you for the thread! I had no idea such pretty games were coming out this summer.

Necropolis has definitely got my eye; the style is just fabulous!

Dat zombie night terror.

And cosmic star...and ghost song where are you!?
Ghost Song is coming along nicely. Some 1080p screenshots from over in the GAF dev thread

Anyone tried Ghost 1.0? I'm looking to get one more game this month and it's between Ghost 1.0 and Steamworld Heist. I would prefer a platformer/Metroidvania, assuming it's of sufficient quality, but am unsure if Ghost 1.0 fits the bill.

Ghost 1.0 is a great metroidvania, full of humor, hard challenges, and plenty of upgrades and stuff.

SteamWorld Heist is a great port. I was expecting a game like Angry Birds and Peggle, but it turns out to be more RPG and tactical fights. I mean, the skill shots are not so relevant so far.

I have some trouble with the camera movements in SWH which are very fast when switching between characters, or ending a turn. I am more on the Ghost bandwagon because of this. Otherwise, quality-wise, very impressive HD graphics.

Yes, I'm playing and enjoying it quite a bit right now. It's really good from what I've seen so far, but beware that it starts out very harsh and frustrating and you may flip your desk a few times before you get some upgrades going and the game eases up. Good controls (with 360 pad), fun upgrade selection from what I've seen so far, good secrets and I like the bodysnatching mechanic even if it isn't exactly a new idea.

Also beware of crappy internet humor. Memes and references ahoy!

Playing Steamworld Heist on PC right now and its a blast. Very fun gameplay and customization, with crisp visuals and catchy tunes.

Looking forwards to Furi and Katana Zer0

Lost Sea by Eastasiasoft will be available July 4th, physical copies through Limited Run Games.

I am guessing digital will be available same day.

Abzu is dated for August 2nd now. Headlander has been given a window of late July.

Also just want to say that SteamWorld Heist is brilliant. Played through that over the last week. Looking forward to more DLC for it, and whatever Image & Form has coming next.

Great thread. Subscribed!

I know that Severed was released a couple of months ago.
But I think it's notable that's coming out for 3DS and WiiU this summer.
Game deserves more recognition.

Sounds like Ghost 1.0 is what I'm looking for. To the wishlist with Steamworld.

Thanks :)

Doesn't leave a good first impression, especially in the living room. Game can't be launched with a controller the first time and the controller support itself seems like it's made by someone not used to using a joypad (default jump is on the left bumper :)), but can be changed. The text is tiny and though I'm using controller the inventory screen is still telling me "left mouse button to shoot". Hope the actual game is better than those first impressions.

The dev of Ghost Song is on GAF and has said something about news in Sept.

Trust me, the dude understands what the people need.

Gonna be super dope imo when it drops.

Quick question - how on earth do you keep track of everything coming out?
Pretty easily, actually. Someone will mention something in the Indie Games thread or Steam thread, or I'll see a new thread on the Gaming Side, or come across some news while browsing Rock Paper Shotgun, or take a few minutes to see what's upcoming on Steam

And then I just update here when I get some time

Then again, I write about indie games on four different websites, so it's kind of like my job/hobby/passion to know

Thank you for the effort put into this thread. I love indies, but they're hard to stay on top of. Threads like this help a lot.

Ah right, so you're curating the list almost - I was curious because I can't imagine you trawling through the likes of itch.io and wading through the crap to find the gems, but then this thread seems to mention games that don't show up in Google searches, Reddit wikis, blog posts etc. until almost the day of the game's release.
