God Of War E3 2016 trailer gameplay, not open world, all Kratos, 2017

I really hope that the close camera and slow combat are just there at the start of the game to intro the story, because GOW never had bad gameplay, it's absolute strongest suite was it's combo heavy, fast paced, go crazy shit style gameplay and so far this demo looked the opposite.

Don't get me wrong, the demo looked amazing but I don't want SSM to turn GOW into Ryse + Last of us.

I have never been that into God of War games and only bought one of them, but I am actually excited and can't wait to play this. Way to go Sony.

This was my first thought. It's actually funny that Ryse's combat actually looks a bit more fluid than this. The combat in this trailer looked closer to that new game from Ninja Theory, Hellblade. I embrace the new direction but I will have to see more before I'm convinced.

Great point! It does look a lot like Hellblade as well, now that you mention it. That may in fact be the closest comparison along with Ryse.

I love this. I was done after God of War 2. The fixed camera angles and simplistic combos just got so derivative. I got tired of its reliance on QTE. Thank fucking god that they are progressing it.
Welp, they changed the camera angles but it doesn't really seem like they made the combat system more complex (in fact, it looks even more streamlined) and it looks to be even moreso reliant on QTES.

The theme at the start of the conference was pretty great (I'm assuming it's for GOW4)

I liked what was shown off. You can see Kratos just trying to keep his calm at some bits, even if he still comes off as an ass. He even tries to console the kid at the end but he just hover hands it lol.

The only thing I'm not convinced on is the combat. It may just be that we're seeing him from a different angle but it looked pretty basic. It could just be the weapon or the angle but I'm not liking the look of it so far.

Also I did get reminded of Last of Us (same happened with Days Gone too lol), not sure if that's a good thing

For me personally, this was one of the best game reveals I can remember. I love God of War, but obviously the formula needed a shake up. I thought the shake up would be the setting, but they went all out and changed the entire perspective too. I'm not going to judge the combat yet, because obviously it will be fleshed out as you progress. But it looked fun to me.

Also, I highly doubt that it will be a "feelings" simulator. I expect this is just the setup, and will lead to our new motivation for destruction.

This will be just as epic as the others. The scale will be huge. The spectacle will be immense. But the scenery and mechanics will be fresh. Can't wait.

*sigh*..I guess I'm just hung up on nostalgia, but I can't get in tune with this. I was all for a little change, but this took it too far into a territory that we've already seen in other games. Not every game has to be like the Last of Us. They need to grow on the strengths they established in their own franchise, not build new foundations by borrowing from elsewhere. Change is good when the roots of the franchise are still well recognizable. I didn't see one thing which reminded me of the God of War series except Kratos, and even he was barely recognizable both in looks and personality.

I see Loki fucking with Kratos. Tricking him into killing the other gods or killing Odin if his son is taken away. Loki relates to Kratos as being similar with their conflicted relationship with their fathers. Kratos kills Odin than the other gods come in full force. The sins of the father flowing over to their son might be the big factor of the story. I got chills when the son shot Kratos. It seem like a foreshadow or a reminder of his family curse where to father's is destined to die by his son.

You know, from reading everyone's reactions in this thread about never liking the series and now loving the new formula, you'd almost forget the old games sold over 20 million copies. I like the aesthetics and setting, but I can't be the only one to think all of Sony's games are starting to look the same right?

I was thinking exactly the same thing, they look gorgeous and graphics are fucking awesome, but damn... gameplay just feels...scripted? I think it's the best way to describe it.

These don't look like bullshots to me.

Be interesting to see how they rationalise Kratos under a different mythology.

Looked like part Ryse, part Last of Us, part God of War. Not sure how to feel about the over the shoulder aspect of it. I adore God of War, but this didn't initially seem very God of War like.

GOW has always been that one franchise I'm not very into but still have enough passing interest in to have played most of the main titles they've released and enjoyed them well enough. So to me, this new direction looks much more interesting than a retread of the past 3 titles would've been.
I can understand why older fans might be upset though. Definetely gonna be one of those divisive titles.

GAME OF E3, excellent trailer. Great character direction without giving much of the story... just enough to keep me very interested and excited. That fight scene... WOW

I guess it took a magic sword to the gut, but Kratos finally learned some anger management skills. Which means this is going to be a very different kind of God of War game, unless they kill the kid and he goes on the same rampage he did in the original games, which would be kind of boring.

It's a bold move, it looks so different from the prior games. Wait and see, I guess.

so he got a new wife and kid? if thats the case i guess in kinda makes sense..

seems like the wife is dead now. i think they implied it in the dialogue. but damn i like family man kratos with the beard, the interaction with his son is great. i really hope they don't kill the kid off. just have him step aside later in the game as kratos has to go fuck shit up on his own.

would be wack if he has another dead family to be pissed about. calmer kratos is like a whole new character.

Lol seriously. I'll wait to see more before passing final judgement but at first blush it seems like the game is missing the bombastic sense of adventure the previous games had. Really disappointing.

GOW had become so big and bombastic that it was all just noise. Nothing was impressive. Dialling it back and grounding it is EXACTLY what they needed to do. That way the moments that are bombastic in this game will actually have a chance to shine. Even in this demo they managed to make a troll like character more imposing than they have ever been in a GOW game.

Gotta admit I was not all that excited for a new God of War game but this hyped me right the fuck up.

You mean you didn't see the gratuitous non QTE scene where Kratos almost twists a beasts head off?

Not a fan of this. There was no reason to turn GOW into TLOU.

Six games of the same shit was reason enough. Ascension was not received well. I'm guessing the devs were also tired of making the same game again.

Coming into this conference I was ready to dismiss GOW4 outright but that video made me do a 180 on the franchise.

I'm not sure how it can be a reboot, when one of his attacks make reference to Spartan. It's was called Spartan Rush or Assualt. Also, he has the scar from SOO on his abs.

It's pretty and I like the setting, but there doesn't seem to be any reason this should be God of War (or Kratos) other than just marketing purposes. It should have been a new IP.

God of War was basically all about dumb action, being pissed off, and taking it out on everything around you in the most gory ridiculous fashion to get that carnal pleasure out of it. I'm not saying that was better, but this isn't that at all... unless the game takes a complete 180 after this part or something.

It's Kratos in Norse mythology. It's absolutely brilliant and completely fresh as well. We don't have enough games that explore Vikings and Norse mythology and I have been begging for them for years.

I personally like it, but TBF it really wasn't too long ago Skyrim went full bore on the whole setting, so it doesn't feel super fresh to me still.

I call it "walk-and-talk gaming". I don't hate it, but it should be reserved for only certain types of games (ie. a former hack-and-slash title not being one of them).

I've only played the original God of War. I'm quite interested in jumping back in with this one. The reveal was quite stunning.

I think I'd rather play the kid with bitterness against his shitty dad.

I did think it was odd how it seemed to take cues from Last of Us of all things. It looks predictably great, visually speaking. The troll didn't have a particularly good design, but that dragon thing did.

The free range camera changes things. I mean, if anything, it feels almost more automated than it had in the past, and that's not a good thing, but if we have a free range camera, that will allow for some creativity once we get other weapons. As it is, the combat looks pretty bad.

The fact that I am so much more interested in the kid though emphasizes to me how much I am over Kratos. His story is done 5 times over. I don't give a shit about him and I don't really care about how he's a shitty father now. The character of someone whose Kratos' son, however, intrigues me.

It feels like a simple solution to everyone's problems. People have the GoW connection (I personally would have preferred character reincarnation like Legend of Zelda, but whatever), and we still have a new character that is actually born into the Norse mythology rather than merely immigrated into it. I'd rather hear this kids journey, but instead we have Kratos. Again.

Fuck Kratos.

Edit: Wait. WAIT

I just rewatched the trailer

Are they seriously calling this "God of War"? Literally, just "God of War". No subtitle, no number...Listen, if it's not a reboot or atleast a spin off, it has no business being named the same as the first game in the series! They have no business being named the same even then, but without even that justification, what the hell?!

Fucking hell, this game isn't even out yet and it's already getting on my tits.
