Breath of the Wild is the official subtitle for Zelda U/NX, first gameplay trailer

Don't know what thread to ask in, but has anyone seen the green tunic yet in the gameplay yesterday? Surely you can get that at some point in the game.

Maybe it is hot/cold temperature resistant.

Looks very promising. Some things I really like include:

- Beautiful world. I want to get lost in it and make awesome discoveries.
- RPG elements: Crafting, loot, a variety of weapons and tools.
- Choices: A variety of ways to tackle challenges, obstacles, and traversals.
- Voices. How much there is remains to be seen, but it's there. Feels more immersive.
- Art style. I'm convinced the style actually helps the game from looking outdated. With games like Horizon Zero Dawn coming out a month before, Zelda just wouldn't be able to compete with that in the realistic realm. The style helps give the game some personality and life while compromising visual complexities that would come with a realistic style in a open world with Wii U tech. But anime is not mainstream around the world, and it's not going to start with this game, but I do like it and think it was a good decision for this last Wii U adventure.

But not everything is gravy. My concerns:

- Too easy. Push 'b' to win. Combat encounters don't look very interesting at all. Enemies don't appear threatening. I expect some context to the enemies being where they are will be given through the course of the story, but man are they pushovers. Obviously the challenge will increase as the game continues on, but by how much is still in question. Being too easy makes for a boring game and goes against the spirit of Zelda 1 which was a tense game that begged you to explore the world and gather money to make surviving that dangerous world achievable.

- Peaceful world/lack of danger. Zelda 1 had a dangerous world with a number of encounters that are best avoided. Not many squares were rest spots. BotW's world is very big and relaxing, which is not a bad quality, but it's not what I'm looking for in an epic Zelda. I'd like to see dangerous hostile encounters that you can win, but will mostly likely fail until you can acquire stronger gear. Make escape a convincing option worth taking.

- Link's design. No wonder there is a silly fan movement going on. Guy looks like a wimp. I bet if Aloy and Link got in a fist fight, Aloy would beat Link's head in.

- Music is hit and miss. Love the trailer song. That battle theme however is terrible. I don't like it. I guess it's fitting for the pushovers that are the games enemies though.

- Combat. Skyward Swords sword combat system will be missed. This game has a lot of potential though with the various items and exploits I've seen on the streams, but I remain concerned since options mean nothing if there is no value to them. Harder options in combat should yield greater rewards with higher risks while easier options are low risk and less rewarding. Right now, the reward of say, trying to exploit the physics by bowling a bomb down hill and destroying enemies is simply the fun of exploiting the game's engine. It'll get old fast. Give me a real reason not to barge in on enemies camps, guns-a-blazing.

Overall, I'm very pleased they're looking at Zelda 1 once again and watching how others have been evolving the open-world concept since. They've also trimmed a lot of the fat that's been destroying the pacing of other 3D Zelda's. Items no longer annoy with slow text and constant reminders of what they are and what they do. Game respects that the player has some semblance of intelligence to figure out how to survive in this world and doesn't bombard with tutorials. No annoying Fi, Midna, or Navi. Its about time!

Still a lot more to see and learn though. I'm curious what the story is. I haven't seen the dungeons yet, which is a series staple. I heard Audrey say the traditional dungeons are still in, and it's not just that trial crap. I hope those will be done in the style of Zelda 1 as well in that you can tackle them out of order, but some will be much harder than others ("this is hard, let's look for another dungeon and try that instead!"). I like to see my combat/difficulty issues addressed in them as well.

Again, I see lot's of potential and I'm eager to play. Not my favorite game of the show, but I liked a lot of what I saw. I look forward to learning more.
well said...I'm not as hyped as some, see tons of potential, but also some stuff I don't like. An open world game focused on gameplay mechanics is definitely something we need though in the industry.

What was Aonuma's stated reason for gutting the Gamepad map?

http://kotaku.com/hands-on-with-the-legend-of-zelda-breath-of-the-wild-1781969632

“Previously, when I was playing with Mr. Miyamoto, you might have seen that the map was on the GamePad screen,” Aonuma said, referring to a demo he did of the game two Decembers ago. “But after developing the game and playing the game we realized that having a smaller version of the map on screen is actually better so you know where you are at all times. So we decided to take it that route."

Sums up what we have seen so far pretty well.

Never thought I'd actually be so close to buying a WiiU... However, this game is still a ways out, so I'll just wait and possibly get a NX.

I expect it to be something you acquire very late in the game as part of the main story content and that has specific usage against the final boss.

repost from the other thread, but what is up with that awful music cut at 2:03 in the trailer? it's distracting as fuck and located at the worst possible time, too...

Yeah, thought it was a glitch the 1st time, and it still boggles the mind how or why they would have left it like that. Looks like a scene was ripped out or something, but really a sad blotch on what otherwise is an amazing trailer. Just destroys the momentum for me.

Totally unrelated to anything, but I found this kinda funny.

I came across a funny synchronicity today.

I'm going through a couple of NGamer issues from 10 years ago for a project I'm working on and stumbled upon the following, which is quite apt after yesterday. ;)

I still can't believe that this is the new Zelda, definitely the reason why i bought a Wii U (i'm gonna double dip, not even gonna fool myself).

I'm like 83% sure this is going to be the timeline where Link failed in OoT.

I'm thinking about this too. The only counterpoint is the fact the koroks are present. It could lead us to think that the game is after ST. But maybe kokiris evolve under other conditions too.
It would be strange for hyrule to comeback after all that is said in the end of Wind Waker.

The one hundred years thing makes no sense to me given the state of the world, or seems to short of a time scale. Things are so overgrown, rusted, and reclaimed by the elements that it has to have been far more than a century. The damage on the Master Sword would make me think hundreds of years not just a hundred. It's not some cheap iron from the 50s that has oxidized. Smithed weapons take a long, long time to decay.

Well it could do before spirit tracks, since phantom hourglass and spirit tracks focus in new lands, maybe this game focuses on how in the future, the land of Hyrule was not filled with water anymore, which would explain why everything is in ruins

Also, a lot of people (myself included) believe
the guy who gives you the glider is the king of hyrule, since he stayed in hyrule after the final battle in WW and looks really similar (with the beard and the eye shape)

(I put it as spoiler since maybe not everyone has completely played WW)

We know he has been asleep for 100 years, but we don't know what happened 100 year prior this game, this game could be located hundreds of years after spirit tracks, not just a hundred

I wonder what they will do with the non descending mobility, as sheild boarding and the glider seem like great aditions, so I hope they can add something else smart to deal with going across plains or uphill in a similar fast and interesting way, and not just a horse.

Can I champion the godawful UI decisions?

The inconsistency of fonts?
The inconsistency of of font weights?
The inconsistency of visual hierarchy?
Readability issues?

Ugh...gross.

Yes, I wasn't really feeling the fonts either.

If the guy who gives you the glider is the King of Hyrule then that would be poetic since in Wind Waker, he's stuck on land as a boat until Link shows up with a wind sail.

BTW, unsure if this was covered:
Zoom the map out, and that world becomes a sprawl of regions grouped into valleys, jungles, mountains and—Treehouse’s Bill Trinen teased this last—possibly even the ocean.

http://time.com/4365659/zelda-breath-of-the-wild/

Edit: oh, and

And when someone asked where this Zelda slots in the lore, Aonuma pointed to the t-shirt he came wearing, inscribed with a variation on the Sheikah eye symbol that’s appeared in Zelda games since Ocarina of Time. Make of that what you will, said Aonuma with a sly smile.

I haven't owned a Ninty console since SNES but this may inspire me to pick up the NX.

I've owned several handhelds (gba, DS, 3DSXL) and thoroughly enjoyed my time with those thanks to zelda and a couple other choice titles but the lack of more mature games has steered me away from Nintendo Consoles in the past. I'm just not a huge fan of platformers or JRPG and that seems to be the bulk of their content.

Anyway this looks beautiful and I for one actually really appreciate the art direction theyre using here. I'm sure as others have stated its being used to cover up the fact that the console simply can't compete with PS4 or Xbox but even if they could I may actually like this better for Zelda. I would pick up a title that looked like this for my PS4 in a heartbeat

Hm, can anyone tell me if the icy area explored in Treehouse (and all areas except in the Beyond the Great Plateau segment of the show) is part of the Great Plateau?

Dunno, just guessing, when they had a special segment that dealt with stuff outside of the Great Plateau, then everything else should be in the Plateau area.

I hope they will keep the focus on minimalism and italic sans serif fonts.

I really don't mind the focus on minimalism and clean fonts (actually, I welcome it!) but I hope they change the font itself. Didn't like it - felt like a placeholder (and it probably is).

Anyway, they've got a long time to make changes -big and small- to the UI, so I'm not that bothered :)

I'm a 36 old man with 3 kids who just sat in my car and giggled with my mouth open while watching that trailer. This just might end up being the best game I have ever played. Everything was just so perfect and had everything I could ever ask for in a Zelda game. If I went back and asked my 7 year old self after playing the original Zelda on the NES what my perfect Zelda game would be this trailer probably touched on it all. So beautiful and that music was 2nd to none. Nintendo magic is still real.

Has anyone heard if you can increase your stamina with more permanent hearts? (Or any other method?)

Are you talking about stamina meter (depleted while running and climbing)? Yes, I've read somewhere that stamina meter can be upgraded, and I've seen some ingredients which had a derivative of "stamina" in their names... I bet they can be used for making stamina potions like in Skyward Sword.

If you are talking about health meter... I don't know. I have heard nothing about heart containers, but I've seen some food which gives you additional single-use (yellow) hearts.

It's not push to win, if you're noot carefull you can get easely killed.

- Peaceful world/lack of danger.

They're "hidden enemies", in the gif below, the player was supirse by that elite who was just a bunch of rock then got killed.

The truth is during the 5hours of stream we hardly could be able to hear any musics because they toned it down so we could hear the streamers clearly. So, I think it's early to judge.

I think you might have missed some details that we shown during the stream, so I recommand you to take a look at this recap: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1233823

I had thought Koroks had existed since at least Ocarina of Time. If I remember correctly Wind Waker mentioned that they only took on the form of children for OoT. If that's the case this could take place in any timeline. I'd bet that this fits in the timeline where the hero falls as they specifically mention the decline of the kingdom

I was talking about the stamina meter - the round one that shows up when running or climbing. Good to hear that you can "get stronger" in the game too.

In regards to VA I have a feeling that cutscenes will be the only thing to have it. While normal dialogue in the world will be text based only. Which I think is more or less fine. Cutscenes are really the one area that desperately needed VA while from what we've seen of normal in-game convos they are much brisker and unobtrusive in presentation which makes up for a lot of the issues previous games had. VA would be nice, but for me personally it's not a must. As long as cutscenes have it to remove the terrible pauses previous games had I'll be happy. Plus I get the feeling there won't be a ton of dialogue in this game to begin with.

Yeah, it'll likely be that way.

I think they might have been the Kikwis prior to Ocarina. It'd be interesting if this game was in a parallel time to Wind Waker, either the Downfall or Child timelines, and the Koroks are just an inevitable form they end up taking.

Koroks had the job of restoring hyrule in TWW. Given that Hyrule is in a state of needing to be restored, it's not surprising they're back.

I'll be curious to see if there are any direct connections, but I'm really not at all that interested in it.

Thank you. So Shrine 4/4 segment showed 3 shrines total, the last two of which are outside the Plateau? Or Shrine 4/4 showed two total, both outside the Plateau? I feel like that was the icy area but I'm trying to recall if I saw it. I haven't watched all the footage yet, though.

Haha, you'd think so, but you never know with Nintendo and those icy areas looked so different from the rest of the Plateau. And I couldn't quite figure out where on the Plateau map we saw that the icy area is. (And see above--evidently only the end of the Beyond the Plateau section showed areas beyond the Plateau ;))

Two, both outside the plateau

Am I the only one bothered that the chests don't open all the way through?
I think I saw at one point Link opening the chest from the wrong side. So I guess the chest doesn't open all the way because they want you to be able to open them from any side now (which is good) and the chest would clip through Link if it opened all the way.
