Breath of the Wild is the official subtitle for Zelda U/NX, first gameplay trailer

The map records places you've earned game overs with a red X. It shows more than one at a time if you've died in multiple places, too. I wonder how many it records at once.

Ganon looks great. Pretty sure he's just supposed to be riding a horse there, though it might be some other critter. Makes him look like a cross between OoT and WW's Phantom Ganon really, although I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up having a pig snout in this. It'd only make sense, with all those Zelda 1 inspirations. We really haven't had a humanoid pig Ganon in a 3D zelda game, expect for his alternate OoT form I suppose.

But yeah, really great looking like I said. Very ominous and intimidating, especially at that size. I imagine you're going to be able to see him circling Hyrule Castle from quite a distance, which sounds really cool.

It's Pig Ganon. The "horns" you're seeing are tusks at the front of the upper jaw. You can see him open and close a huge mouth.

I have loved almost every final fight in the Zelda series so I can't wait to see what they're going to pull off for Calamity Ganon, assuming of course he is the final boss

Isn't he dead?

In the Fallen Hero timeline the Hero of Time got defeated by Ganon and Ganon got his hands on the complete triforce.

This game begins with Link waking up after 100 years in a medical chamber. Ganon has become a god-like force that Zelda has barely kept contained for the last 100 years.

And on top of that, we have this quote from Aonuma...

At a group Q&A with reporters on Sunday, Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma was asked where the game fit into the franchise timeline. Aonuma said he didn’t want to say much about the story at the moment but said he’d stare a hint. He noted that that the t-shirt he was wearing showed the symbol for the Sheikah stones and that it was the same one from The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. (In Breath of the Wild, the reawakened Link uses a high-tech item called the “Sheikah slate”). Aonuma also reminded people that, at the start of this game, Link is told he’s been asleep for 100 years. “He teased: “You can decide what this means.”

http://kotaku.com/fans-are-already-trying-to-place-breath-of-the-wild-on-1782089318

So Aonuma's gone on record that using the Sheikah insignia in this game is a nod to Ocarina specifically and made a point to remind folks that this Link has been asleep for 100 years.

Originally I was more of the opinion that this game might be a retelling of Zelda 1 or set after AoL, but with this info... yeah. I'm starting to think this Link is the Hero of Time in the Downfall Timeline.

Ah, I wasn't even considering the "horns" there, I was referring to WW Phantom Ganon's shadowy look while OoT's version mounted a horse.

You made me realize I was looking at it from a different perspective though, you're right. I assume you mean it's a huge head, correct? Definitely see that now, although I still very much see the humanoid interpretation in him too. Maybe it's supposed to be both? That'd be very clever.

Can clearly see it's more pig face than man now though, so that one's definitely the intentional way to interpret him if it's only one.

Shadow form with colour highlights screams Wind Waker Phantom Ganon though, that part stands out either way.

I doubt this game's Link in this is the Hero of Time if only because this Link is right handed.

'while you were sleeping in your own juices Link, we re-wired your brain to make you right-handed. If you have any objections, just say the word and you'll be left-handed in no time.'

'...'

'great, it's settled.'

But in all seriousness, this means Master Quest is canon, lol

That would be pretty awesome. I was hoping that the old man was the hero of time and was training another incarnation of Link for the "final" battle with Ganon in order to close the hero fails timeline, but this could be cool too.

Well, after watching the trailer probably dozens of times, several minutes of gameplay and people's reactions overall, I just wanted to say that Nintendo did it again, it's been years since the last time I got excited like this about a videogame, Mr Iwata is surely proud wherever he is right now, I can't think in a better way to honor his memory, and honor the little fans that are inside of everyone who grew up with this franchise. I just feel like a kid again, thanks Nintendo.

Given how incorporeal Calamity Ganon looks, I wonder if they'll go for an angle where it's become an entity separate from Ganon/dorf, with the latter existing as the old man who's either actually trying to fix his mistakes or just manipulating Link. I'm not sure if I want that - it's very cliche, but it would make his role here a little different. And make the white-haired Ganondorf from Smash Bros. and Hyrule Warriors canon, in a way...

Hence the resurrection chamber.
Aonuma said that this time around there would be a focus on technology over magic. It was mentioned in the demo by the old man that the towers rose up signifying something bad was going to happen. It also looks like this Sheik ah technology was incorporated and used throughout Hyrule. I wonder if Ganon found some way to corrupt, infect or fuse with this technology to turn it against themselves. I'm thinking Calamity Ganon is a byproduct of Ganon corrupting, infecting or fusing with the sheikah technology and being able to use the technology across Hyrule to attack his enemies.

Have they said anything about a Hero mode? (Maybe I won't need it, judging by some of the bigger enemies, but did they?)
Just play the game naked :p
Seriously, though. Hero mode removed heart drops, this game has none so it's kind of integrated. In hero mode you'd need to prioritize potions and other consumables just like here

Maybe the Towers are actually old Sheikah Stones that were buried in the land? And them popping up out of the ground is like their lock being removed on whatever is imprisoning Ganon?

now that e3 is done and i'm home (yay) i'll write up some thoughts as this was one of only four games i played at the show. the others were 100 ft robot golf, which is great, and another is an indie game called movie or die, which is fun as hell, and the last was ghostbusters.

so in breath of the wild, there are two demos. the first is 15 minutes long and gives you a sense of the world. the second was 20 minutes long and starts from the beginning of the game. that means i played 105 minutes of the legend of zelda: breath of the wild. each time i fell a little more in love with it.

the story section was something i thought was forced upon you and linear - and i can see how nintendo is sort of crafting a gentle push in the direction to play the game, but i noped out of that this morning and ran around until i found the old man again, trying to hunt, and i ruined his day. my favorite part was sitting down and skipping to night, only to find myself surrounded by skeletons and bokoblins. fortunately, i had some weapons by this point, so i was able to kill one of the skeletons and pick up their arm as a new melee weapon. this was all to get the treasure that was within a small skull structure, which turned out to be the fire rod which was demoed in december 2014.

it evokes the same feeling for me that shadow of the colossus did in 2005. there's this huge world to explore and that also means climbing and not just running. i was giddy to get twilight princess in 2006 as it was basically ocarina of time again after two console games that followed up in different ways. open world isn't a new thing in 2016, but it feels like the promise of ocarina of time is finally being delivered. when the booth folks asked me if there was anything i would improve, i really couldn't think of anything. it was fucking rad.

I'm still so curious why Link has Gerudo arm bands in the offical art, especially when the game seems so Sheikah heavy. Hopefully he goes and spends some time in the Gerudo Valley, and gets them there. Still not bitter at all about the lack of Nabooru in Hyrule Warriors, nope, not at all.

You made me realize I was looking at it from a different perspective though, you're right. I assume you mean it's a huge head, correct? Definitely see that now, although I still very much see the humanoid interpretation in him too. Maybe it's supposed to be both? That'd be very clever.

It's driving me crazy, I see a giant boar one moment, then Phantom Ganon on a horse. The colour highlights are fantastic.

Hmm. When you cause the Resurrection Tower to erupt from the ground, three other towers rise elsewhere. The first gives you your map for the local area, which is easy enough to obtain, because you're on it when it rises. But the towers are really tall, like some of the tallest things around. It'll take ages to climb up the other ones. I wonder how quickly you can gain flight or a hookshot or something to lessen climbing time.

Aonuma said that they made Link right-handed because the sword controls are on the right side of the controller. Handedness has nothing to do with the plot

Aonuma said that this time around there would be a focus on technology over magic. It was mentioned in the demo by the old man that the towers rose up signifying something bad was going to happen. It also looks like this Sheik ah technology was incorporated and used throughout Hyrule. Actually, you cause the towers to rise up at the start of the game. You go to the point marked on your map and put your Sheikah Slate in a pedestal. Suddenly a tower rises up from below you and all of the towers across the land also rise up. Zelda tells Link to remember what happened 100 years ago and he sees Ganon attacking the castle. The Old Man asks if he remembers who the voice belongs to, but Link has amnesia. He then explains that Ganon has been being kept barely contained in Hyrule Castle for 100 years.

I don't think Sheikah technology has been incorporated into the world. They've kept it secret and only shared it with the Hyrule Royal Family. The Old Man knows about it because he's special. He looks a LOT like King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule, too. If this game takes place in the Fallen Hero timeline, it would essentially be set parallel in time to WW, which also had King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule.

My thoughts are that when the Hero of Time fell to Ganon and Ganon got the triforce, the Sheikah, who had been hiding underground since the time of Hylia, rose up with their guardians and tried to stop Ganon, but Ganon turned the guardians against them. They sealed Link in a chamber to heal and waited 100 years.

That takes us to 23 letters!

This one was really hard to read. I noticed that there was writing on the elevators that take you down into the shrines, but the letters on them are upsidedown for some reason and the forcefield around the elevator shaft made the letters really hard to see. However I was able to make out O_INGPLA
JO5NCOv.jpg

so it's most likely MOVINGPLATFORM

Someone got "X" as well.

So the shiny orbs are nostrils not eyes? Interesting. Only after reading other posts in this thread am I starting to see tusks and not horns. I guess it's designed to be sort of unclear and mysterious.

I'm reminded of Zelda:SS's Imprisoned but BotW's big threat also shares something in common with the Moon of Zelda:MM in that it is a really obvious looming danger. You can see the vortex around Hyrule Castle from almost anywhere in the world and I suspect that there will be flareups of the monstrous form throughout the game.

Link was warned that the world would end if Calamity Ganon got too powerful and so he has to hurry. I wonder whether these warnings are just for atmosphere or if there will be gameplay implications. Is the Hyrule of BotW really a doomed world like Termina where a time mechanic will be an integral part of the gameplay? We know there's an in-game clock and Link has the ability to pass time at campfires. Will he gain time manipulation powers beyond the stasis lock?

Nintendo hasn't shown any towns but I think that there will be meaty sidequests and this is how much of the game's story will be revealed. As you meet characters, you'll learn of their stories, misfortunes, and mythical hope for a hero which will explain how the world declined and Link's place in it. But it will be up to the player to engage this aspect since they won't be driven along by a linear story. You could very well do the bare minimum to get to an ending as Aonuma suggested.

Finally, I kind of believe the claim that there are relatively few traditional dungeons along with the 100 shrines. I think the towers are connected to them somehow and they've shown about four of those so far (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGXg0KTgbY0&t=9m36s) . However the artwork shows one near Lake Hylia (?) and the final dungeon, presumably Hyrule Castle, could be an additional major dungeon so there might be more than four. Anyway, looking forward to this game.

I don't really understand why so much of GAF is having a hard time seeing what I thought was very clear, but clearly this is a real thing people are missing, because I've typed this out like three or four separate times already, so here:

It's Pig Ganon with a huge gaping mouth. The shape, volumes as they rotate, location of the temporomandibular joint, etc. are completely consistent with a massive jaw. Hopefully the trace makes it pretty clear for everyone.

Edit: I just rewatched that part and it's also worth mentioning that the guttural roaring only happens while the mouth is open.

In Skyward Sword the sections taking place in the past had eletricity and high-tech equipment. This Link would be from that time, and this game taking place nearby the time of Skyward Sword. Does Link come out of the Care Unit with the tablet?

I saw on a youtube video that the names of the shrines are probably all anagrams for the dev names. For example, Oman Au is for Aonuma.

Sorry if this has been brought up already but ya'll talking about maybe this resurrected Link being the defeated Hero of Time in the Fallen Hero Timeline, one of the Treehouse members actually referred to this Link as the Hero of Time on screen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H59...t=PL2JiZAV5BmDVVoD0FkdL8XVyIm3IWYJYa#t=15m16s

Could have been just a "refer to all Links as the Hero of Time because it's a popular moniker thing," or perhaps an actual slip up.

Thanks for the info. Also yeah I agree with your speculation. This game is likely to be set 100 years after OOT during the Fallen Link timeline. Somehow Zelda, the sages and the Sheikah seal Ganon. Link is in a restoration pod set to awaken when the world needs him or something.

If they do the Fallen Link route, I could see them giving us the Zelda 2 towns as well.

Mario is as much in need of a shake up as Zelda, maybe even more. lt's become extremely stale and samey these past few years.

Bullshit. Super Mario 3D World was fresh as hell. Yes, it was fundamentally a platformer, albeit a brilliant one. Staying true to its roots in terms of the fundamental genre is called "samey"? There was a shitload of new mechanics, ideas, and visuals in that game, same as most Marios before it.

Man, this game looks good. I have a Wii U but I'm not sure if Ill get it at launch. I'll probably wont have the money to buy a NX at launch. But I want to play this game in its fullest glory. Decisions decisions :p

Instead of that I'd rather he just became this weird entity after being immortal however long and/or banished to some other plane. Like if a theme in this game is decline or decay or the end of a timeline, then apply that to Ganon and this malevolent thing is what persists.

Taking a more 'force of nature' approach and having him become a decayed, questionably sentient eldritch creature over the millenia of his existence would definitely have potential to fit in with the themes they seem to be going for, as well as presenting a different take on his character compared to most of his appearances that nevertheless ties into the nature of his role in the first game. Either way, I hope they do something interesting with it. I'd hate for Calamity Ganon to just be a more visually impressive Phantom Ganon commanded by a more traditional incarnation of Ganondorf or Pig Ganon.

Here is Majora's Mask's connection!!!

There is pretty much a connection to every 3D Zelda game

I have a theory about the towns. According to Nintendo, no towns were shown at E3 because showing them would reveal parts of the plot. I have a feeling that the towns are going to be iconic towns from Zelda games.

1) Termina
2) Remember the island from the old 2014 map? Possibly Windfall island
3) The floating island in the sky is Skyloft
4) Kakariko village

In Twilight Princess, Zant had the power to change the setting during the fight to different places. Maybe the twilight people will play a role?

Only from an extremely superficial point. The NSMB games, NSMBWii and NSMBU especially, have brought tons of new ideas and refinement to the 2D games. The only thing that is objectively stale is the music. The gameplay and level design are top of the game.

I really want to see more expansion on what they did to him in Twilight Princess. Some sort of story reference to the effect his roll as "a sword or saves everything then doesn't have a purpose and must now live "normal" or forgotten in every story" has on him. I do think that is a bit too deep for a Zelda story though so I will keep my hopes limited. WW Gannon surprised me before though so I can at least hope for a villain with more depth like him instead of just a force of evil.

After watching the majority of the videos out there, it is the first time that I seriously consider going media blackout for a game. I think I have already seen enough that could convince me to buy it, and the game has so many details that I wanted to test and discover from playing the retail version. What do you think?

But on the other hand I'm way too curious, so I just don't know if I'm capable of going on media blackout...
